近年、有料道路での通行料金の収受を、車両を停止させることなく自動的に行なうようにした自動料金収受システム(ETC(Electronic Toll Collection )システム)が開発されている。このシステムでは、料金所ゲートに設置した固定局通信装置(路側無線装置)と車両に搭載した車載器との間で、当該車載器側に装着されたICカード(情報記録媒体)内の記憶情報に基づいた双方向無線通信を行ない、その通信により自動的に料金の支払いを行なうように構成される。また、車載器には外部入力部たるスイッチが設けられており、このスイッチが操作されると、支払いの履歴や残金状況が表示されるようになっている。
