In−Sn−O(ITO)、In−Zn−O(IZO)、Zn−O、Zn−O−Al、Zn−Sn−O、In−O、Sn−O、Cd−O、Cd−In−O、Cd−Sn−O、Mg−In−O、Ca−Ga−O等の導電性無機酸化物、金属ドープされたポリチオフェン等の導電性高分子、α−Si、α−SiC、α−C等の非晶質半導体、μ−C−Si、μ−C−O−Si等の微結晶等からなる透明電極層であってもよい。
【0012】
In−Sn−O(ITO)、In−Zn−O(IZO)、Zn−O、Zn−O−Al、Zn−Sn−O等の導電性酸化物を挙げることができる。

Organic electroluminescence (EL) elements have high visibility due to self-coloring, are all solid-state displays unlike liquid crystal displays, have excellent impact resistance, have high response speed, and are not affected by temperature changes. In addition, it has advantages such as a large viewing angle, and in recent years, its use as a light emitting element in an image display device has been attracting attention.
[0003]
The structure of an image display device using an organic EL element is based on a laminated structure of an anode layer / a light emitting layer / a cathode layer, and a structure in which a transparent anode layer is formed on a base material using a glass substrate or the like is usually employed. Yes. In this case, light emission is extracted from the substrate side (anode layer side).
In recent years, attempts have been made (upside light emission) by making the cathode layer transparent and taking out light emission from the cathode layer side. By realizing the top emission, first, when the anode layer is made transparent together with the cathode layer, a transparent light emitting element as a whole becomes possible. An arbitrary color can be adopted as the background color of such a transparent light emitting element, and it becomes possible to make a colorful display other than during light emission, and the decorativeness is improved. On the other hand, by adopting black as the background color, the contrast during light emission is improved. In addition, when a color filter or a color conversion layer is used due to the realization of top emission, the above layers can be arranged on the light emitting layer. Further, since light emission is not blocked by the TFT (Thin Film Transistor) of the active drive display device, a display device with a high aperture ratio is possible.
[0004]
As an example of the organic EL image display device that can emit light from the upper surface by making the cathode layer transparent, an organic layer including an organic EL light emitting layer is interposed between the anode layer and the cathode layer. A configuration is disclosed in which an electron injection metal layer and an amorphous transparent conductive layer are formed, and the electron injection metal layer is in contact with an organic layer (Patent Document 1). Also disclosed is a configuration in which a Ca diffusion barrier layer is provided between the cathode layer and the organic layer in order to prevent the cathode material from diffusing into the organic layer, thereby preventing short-circuiting of organic EL elements and deterioration of characteristics. (Patent Document 2). Further, as an example of double-sided light emission, a configuration in which a conductive layer such as Ag, Mg, TiN or the like is interposed between the transparent cathode layer and the light emitting layer in order to reduce the resistance of the transparent cathode layer is disclosed ( Patent Document 3). Furthermore, for the purpose of preventing intrusion and diffusion of oxygen and indium into the organic layer, a configuration using TiN for the anode layer is disclosed (Patent Documents 4 and 5). In addition, in order to improve the luminous efficiency, an electron injection layer subjected to metal doping is provided between the organic layer and the cathode layer to stabilize the injection of charges into the organic layer (Patent Document). 6, Patent Document 7).
[0005]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in the conventional organic EL image display device capable of emitting light from the top surface, in the process of forming the transparent cathode layer by the sputtering method, an impact of argon ions with a high irradiation amount of several hundred volts is applied to the organic layer. There has been a problem that non-radiative quenching occurs at the interface with the electron injection layer due to the structure change. In addition, the introduction of oxygen during the formation of the transparent cathode layer inevitably oxidizes the metal doped in the electron injection layer, and thus the electron injection function of the electron injection layer is lost.
The present invention has been made in view of such circumstances, and provides an organic electroluminescent image display device capable of extracting light with high efficiency from the cathode layer side of the upper surface and capable of displaying a high-quality image. With the goal.
[0006]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve such an object, an organic electroluminescent image display device of the present invention includes a base material, an anode layer sequentially provided on the base material, an organic layer, and a light-transmitting first cathode. Layer, a light-transmitting electron transport protective layer, and a light-transmitting second cathode layer, and the electron transport protective layer includes an alkali metal and / or an alkaline earth metal in the electron-transporting organic material. Contains The first cathode layer has a molar ratio of the electron transporting organic material and the alkali metal and / or alkaline earth metal in the range of 1: 1 to 1: 3 and the thickness in the range of 10 to 100 nm. Is made of alkali metal and / or alkaline earth metal, and the second cathode layer is made of at least one of inorganic oxide and inorganic nitride. The configuration is as follows.
As another embodiment of the present invention, the alkali metal and / or alkaline earth metal constituting the first cathode layer is the same type as the alkali metal and / or alkaline earth metal contained in the electron transport protective layer. The configuration is as follows.
As another aspect of the present invention, the first cathode layer has a thickness in the range of 0.1 to 10 nm.
[0007]
As another aspect of the present invention, the anode layer has a specific resistance of 1.0 × 10 6. -3 The structure is made of a metal or an inorganic oxide of Ω · cm or less.
As another aspect of the present invention, the second cathode layer is formed by a vacuum film forming method in which oxygen is not introduced in the film forming process.
As another embodiment of the present invention, the second cathode layer is formed by a sputtering method using an argon gas having an oxygen-containing volume ratio of 1/300 or less as a sputtering gas in the film forming step. did.
As another aspect of the present invention, the base material is configured to be one of a glass substrate, a silicon substrate, and a polymer film.
In the present invention as described above, the electron transport protective layer interposed between the first cathode layer and the second cathode layer prevents deterioration and oxidation of the organic layer and the first cathode layer when the second cathode layer is formed. It works.

Next, an Example is shown and this invention is demonstrated further in detail.
[Example 1]
As a base material, a transparent glass substrate (non-alkali glass NA35 manufactured by NH Techno Glass Co., Ltd.) having a thickness of 25 mm × 25 mm and a thickness of 0.7 mm was prepared. A Cr thin film was formed. In forming this Cr thin film, Ar was used as the sputtering gas, the pressure was 0.3 Pa, and the DC output was 1.0 kW. Next, a photosensitive resist (OFPR-800 manufactured by Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd.) is applied onto the Cr thin film, mask exposure, development (using NMD3 manufactured by Tokyo Ohka Kogyo Co., Ltd.), etching (etching solution: The -Inktec Co., Ltd. MR-E2000) was performed to form two line-shaped anode layers having a width of 2 mm. The anode layer may be patterned by dry etching.
[0029]
Next, Bayron P CH8000 manufactured by Bayer, which is a mixture of polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT) and polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) represented by the following structural formula (1) on a transparent glass substrate so as to cover the anode layer. Was applied by a spin coating method and dried to form a hole injection transport layer (thickness 80 nm).

Subsequently, poly (dioctyl divinylene represented by the following structural formula (2) is formed on the hole injecting and transporting layer in a glove box which is an environmental condition having an oxygen concentration of 0.8 ppm or less and a humidity of 1 ppm or less (dew point −115 ° C.). Fluorene-co-anthracene) (PF 106 ADS106GE) was applied by a spin coat method and dried to form a light emitting layer (thickness 80 nm).
[0032]
[Chemical formula 2]
[0033]
Further, a first cathode layer was formed by depositing Ca on the light emitting layer to a thickness of 3 nm by vacuum heating deposition.
Next, a vapor deposition film (thickness 50 nm) of bathocuproine (BCP) and Li represented by the following structural formula (3) was formed on the first cathode layer to form an electron transport protective layer. The electron transport protective layer was formed under the conditions of a vacuum degree of 5 × 10 -Five The film forming rate of BCP was adjusted to 2 Å / sec so that the molar ratio of BCP and Li was 1: 2.
[0034]
[Chemical 3]
[0035]
Next, an IZO thin film (thickness 150 nm) was formed on the electron transport protective layer by magnetron sputtering to form a second cathode layer. In the formation of the second cathode layer, a counter target magnetron sputtering apparatus was used in order to reduce the sputtering damage to the light emitting layer. As the second cathode layer deposition condition, the sputtering gas is Ar and O. 2 Gas mixture (volume ratio Ar: O 2 = 400: 1), the pressure was 0.1 Pa, the RF output was 100 W, and the DC output was 150 W. The gas pressure is 5.5 × 10 at a deposition rate of 4 Å / sec. -2 A line-shaped second cathode layer having a width of 2 mm was formed so as to intersect the anode layer using a mask under the conditions of Pa.
As described above, an anode layer patterned in a line shape having a width of 2 mm and a second cathode layer formed in a line shape having a width of 2 mm so as to be orthogonal to the anode have four light emitting areas (area 4 mm). 2 An organic EL display device having) was produced.
[0036]
The current density when a voltage of 5 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of this organic EL display device is 47 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 1800 cd / m. 2 Met. In addition, when the organic EL display device was continuously driven at 0.5 mA for 240 hours, the light emitting area surface was observed with an optical microscope (30 times), and no dark spot was present. From this result, it was confirmed that in the light emitting area, the presence of the electron transport protective layer prevents the light emitting layer and the first cathode layer from being deteriorated and oxidized during the formation of the second cathode layer.
[0037]
[Example 2]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 1 except that a TiN thin film was provided instead of the IZO thin film as the second cathode layer. As the conditions for forming the TiN thin film, only Ar gas was used as the sputtering gas, the pressure was 0.1 Pa, the RF output was 100 W, and the DC output was 150 W. The gas pressure is 5.5 × 10 at a deposition rate of 4 Å / sec. -2 A TiN thin film having a thickness of 150 nm was formed under the conditions of Pa.
[0038]
The current density when a voltage of 5 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 42 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 1700 cd / m.
[0039]
[Example 3]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 1 except that an electron transport protective layer (thickness 50 nm) containing Ca in bathocuproin (BCP) instead of Li was provided. The film forming rate of BCP was adjusted so that the molar ratio of BCP and Ca was 1: 2.
[0040]
The current density when a voltage of 5 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 50 mA / cm.
[0041]
[Comparative Example 1]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 3 except that the first cathode layer was not provided.
The current density when a voltage of 5 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 6 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 500 cd / m. 2 The light emission characteristics were poor as compared with the organic EL display devices of Examples 1 to 3. However, when the organic EL display device was continuously driven at 1.0 mA for 240 hours and the light emitting area surface was observed with an optical microscope (30 times), no dark spot was present. From this result, it was confirmed that in the light emitting area, the presence of the electron transport protective layer prevented the light emitting layer from being deteriorated and oxidized during the formation of the second cathode layer. Moreover, in the organic EL element which consists of conjugated polymer, it confirmed that the light emission characteristic fell by not providing the 1st electrode layer which consists of an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal.
[0042]
[Comparative Example 2]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 1 except that an electron transport protective layer which did not contain Li and was composed only of bathocuproine (BCP) was provided.
The current density when a voltage of 5 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 0.04 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 0.1 cd / m. 2 The light emission characteristics were extremely poor as compared with the organic EL display devices of Examples 1 to 3. However, when the organic EL display device was continuously driven at 1.0 mA for 240 hours and the light emitting area surface was observed with an optical microscope (30 times), no dark spot was present. From this result, it was confirmed that in the light emitting area, the presence of the electron transport protective layer prevents the light emitting layer and the first cathode layer from being deteriorated and oxidized during the formation of the second cathode layer. In addition, it was confirmed that since the alkali transport metal or alkaline earth metal was not contained in the electron transport protective layer, the charge transport ability of the electron transport protective layer was reduced and the electric field strength was lowered, so that the light emission characteristics were lowered.
[0043]
[Comparative Example 3]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 1 except that the electron transport protective layer was not formed.
The current density when a voltage of 5 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 30 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 1200 cd / m. 2 As compared with the organic EL display devices of Examples 1 to 3, the light emission characteristics were deteriorated. In addition, when the organic EL display device was continuously driven at 0.5 mA for 240 hours and the light emitting area surface was observed (30 times) with an optical microscope, a dark spot with a diameter of about 0.1 mm was 1 mm. 2 It was confirmed at a rate of several in the range. From this result, it was confirmed that the light emitting layer and the first cathode layer were deteriorated and oxidized in the light emitting area when the second cathode layer was formed.

[Example 4]
First, an anode layer was formed in the same manner as in Example 1.
Next, bis (N-naphthyl) -N-phenylbenzidine (α-NPD) represented by the following structural formula (4) is formed on the transparent glass substrate so as to cover the anode layer by vacuum heating vapor deposition. Thus, a hole injection transport layer (thickness 40 nm) was formed.

[0046]
Next, an aluminum quinolinol metal complex (Alq3) represented by the following structural formula (5) was formed on the hole injecting and transporting layer by a vacuum deposition method to form a light emitting layer (thickness 60 nm).
[0047]
[Chemical formula 5]
[0048]
Next, Li was formed into a film with a thickness of 3 nm by vacuum heating vapor deposition on the above light emitting layer to form a first cathode layer. Thereafter, in the same manner as in Example 1, an electron transport protective layer and a second cathode layer were formed to produce an organic EL display device.
The current density when a voltage of 6 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of this organic EL display device is 13 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 370 cd / m. 2 Met. In addition, when the organic EL display device was continuously driven at 2.5 mA for 240 hours, the light emitting area surface was observed with an optical microscope (30 times), and no dark spot was present. From this result, it was confirmed that in the light emitting area, the presence of the electron transport protective layer prevents the light emitting layer and the first cathode layer from being deteriorated and oxidized during the formation of the second cathode layer.
[0049]
[Example 5]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 4 except that a TiN thin film was provided instead of the IZO thin film as the second cathode layer.
The current density when a voltage of 6 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 12 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 340 cd / m.
[0050]
[Comparative Example 4]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 4 except that the first cathode layer was not provided.
The current density when a voltage of 6 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 11 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 330 cd / m. 2 The light emission characteristics were poor as compared with the organic EL display devices of Examples 4 and 5. However, when the organic EL display device was continuously driven at 2.5 mA for 240 hours, the light emitting area surface was observed with an optical microscope (30 times), and no dark spot was present. From this result, it was confirmed that in the light emitting area, the presence of the electron transport protective layer prevented the light emitting layer from being deteriorated and oxidized during the formation of the second cathode layer.
[0051]
[Comparative Example 5]
An organic EL display device was produced in the same manner as in Example 4 except that the electron transport protective layer was not formed.
The current density when a voltage of 6 V is applied to the anode layer and the second cathode layer of the organic EL display device is 6 mA / cm. 2 The luminance of the light emitting area measured from the upper surface (cathode layer) side is about 180 cd / m. 2 The light emission characteristics were poor as compared with the organic EL display devices of Examples 4 and 5. Further, when the above-mentioned organic EL display device was continuously driven at 2.5 mA for 240 hours, the light emitting area surface was observed with an optical microscope (30 times), and a dark spot having a diameter of about 0.1 mm was 1 mm. 2 It was confirmed at a rate of several in the range. From this result, it was confirmed that the light emitting layer and the first cathode layer were deteriorated and oxidized in the light emitting area when the second cathode layer was formed.

【The invention's effect】
As described above in detail, according to the present invention, an electron transport protective layer is interposed between the first cathode layer and the second cathode layer, and the electron transport protective layer is placed in the organic material with an alkali metal and / or alkaline earth. Since it contains metal, the organic layer and the first cathode layer are prevented from being deteriorated and oxidized during the formation of the light-transmitting second cathode layer. It is possible to obtain an organic electroluminescent image display device that is highly reliable without deterioration and that can display light with high efficiency by extracting light from the second cathode layer side on the upper surface with high efficiency.
