Description
本願は2001年12月4日に出願した米国仮特許出願第60/337,123号、2002年2月11日に出願した米国仮特許出願第60/356,400号、2002年10月30日に出願した米国仮特許出願第60/422,422号に基づき優先権を主張するものである。
本発明は、ゴルフボールに係り、特に、外側カバー層を通して下にある一又は複数の層或いは構成要素に到達若しくは入り込む一又は複数のディンプルを持つゴルフボールに関する。
これまで、多くのワンピース、ツーピース(成型されたカバーを持つソリッド弾性芯又はコア)、多層(液体又はソリッドの芯と多重のマントル又はカバー層)ゴルフボールが作られてきた。これらのボールのコア、マントル、カバー等を成型するために使用する異なる種類の材料や製造方法が使用され、これらはボール全体の性能を大きく変えてきた。
本発明の一つの態様は、従来のカバー層より薄いディンプルを持ったカバーを持つゴルフボールを提供することである。このボールは、また、好適にスピンと弾性と耐久性を兼ね備えた特性を生み出す。
以下は図面の簡単な説明であり、これは本発明を説明するために提示するものであり、本発明を特定するためのものではない。
図1は本発明の好ましい実施例のゴルフボールで、コアと、単一のディンプルを持つカバー層を持ち、一又は複数のディンプルがカバーを貫通してその下のコアまで、若しくはコア内に延びている。
図2は図1に示された好適な実施例のゴルフボールの対立した断面図である。
図3は本発明の他の実施例のゴルフボールで、コア要素と、カバー要素を持ち、カバー要素は内側カバー層とディンプルが形成された外側カバー層を含み、外側カバー層の一又は複数のディンプルが内側カバー層まで、若しくは内側カバー層内にまで延びている。
図4は図3に示された好適な実施例のゴルフボールの対立した照断面図である。
図5は本発明により好適な実施例のコアとカバーを持つゴルフボールの部分的詳細断面図であり、カバーを通じてその下のコアに延びる二重半径ディンプルを示している。
図6は本発明の好適な実施例のコアとカバーを持つゴルフボール断面図で、カバー層を通してコアの外部表面に延びる二重半径のディンプルを示している。
図7は本発明の好適な実施例のコアと、内側カバー層と、外側カバー層を持つゴルフボールの部分的断面詳細図であり、外側カバー層は内側カバー層に延びる二重半径ディンプルを持っている。

本発明は改良されたゴルフボールに関し、特にコアの周りに一又は複数の層のカバーを有するゴルフボールに関する。カバーは、一又は複数の、好ましくは複数の外側カバーを通して下の層まで及び/又は下の層或いは更なる下の層まで延びる深いディンプル又は穴
有する。コアは糸巻きコア、液体を囲むものあるいは中空のもの、金属、又はソリッドのようなものであってもよいがソリッドコアが最も好ましい。本発明のゴルフボールは標準のサイズでも大きいサイズのものでもよいが、特別のカバー層の厚さとディンプルの形状の組合せを持っている。ここに詳細に説明されるように、本発明は、また、一または複数の「深いディンプル」に関係している。これらの深いディンプルはボールの他のディンプルより大きい深さを有している。このような深いディンプルは少なくとも一つの層を貫き、その下にあるボールの要素又は層まで、及び/又は内部に延びる。
約0.020インチ、或いはカバーの厚さ及び/又は飛行特性によりそれ以上であった。約0.010インチの深さは通常のディンプルの代表的なものである。これらのディンプルは0.030から0.100インチの厚さの代表的なカバーを有するゴルフボールに使用される。
カバーは少なくとも一つの層を有する。多数層カバーでは、カバーは少なくとも2層を有し、2,3、4,5、6などのように所望の数の層を持つことができる。ツーピースカバーは第1即ち内側層プライ(また、マントル層とも称される)及び第2即ち外側層又はプライを有する。
もし内側層が柔らかすぎるか薄すぎるとき、層が測定の間破裂するため内側層のショアDの測定は難しくなる。そのような状況の場合は、代替的なショアC測定を利用する。更に、コア(又は内側層)が測定される層より硬い場合は、これは時には測定に影響を与える。
コポリマー基材は16重量%より大きい不飽和カルボキシル酸と、約39から89重量%のエチレンと0から約40重量%の柔軟剤コポリマーを広く含む。好ましくは、コポリマーは、約20重量%の不飽和カルボキシル酸と約80重量%のエチレンを含む。最も好ましくは、コポリマーは、約20重量%のアクリル酸と残りのエチレンを含む。
ゴルフボールのコアは、所望のCOR、コンプレッション、硬度及び他の物理的特性を持つ、コアや内側ボール(ボールが多層ボールのとき、コアと少なくとも一つのカバー層)となる、ソリッド、液体、又は他の物質により形成することができる。
本発明のゴルフボールは成形型内においてコア(コア又は内側カバー)を支持する引抜可能ピンの必要を減少するか、或いは取り除くものである。しかしながら、部材を型から引き出すために有用な“ノックアウト”ピンがあってもよい。先行技術においては、引抜可能ピンはコア又はコアと付加的層を支持するために使用される。このピンは、充分なカバー材料が型内に充填され、助けを必要としないようにコアを支持するまで、配置されたコアを支持し、カバー材料により支持される時点で引き抜かれる。引抜可能ピンを使用しないでゴルフボールを成形することは、ボールの製品を造るのに付随的な処理の量を減ずる。更に、引抜可能ピンにカバー材料が付着するために型を頻繁に清掃するという必要がなくなる。
本発明によるゴルフボールが製造された。ゴルフボールが、コア、マントル又は内側カバー、及び外側カバーを持つ。マントルはアイオノマー、外側カバーはRIM法で形成したポリウレタンカバーであった(ボールタイプA)。使用した成形型は、各半球において、図9に示すように三角形状に位置する深いディンプルを形成する6本の支持ピン(各半球について)を持つ。ボールは、下記に示すように、他のボールと比較してテストされた。この結果は下記の表3から5に示される。
溝幅−0.025インチ(ミルカッターによりカットし、シャープなエッジを溝に残す;切削のあとはサンドブラストしたり後処理を施さない)
溝深さ−0.016インチ
溝間隔(溝のエッジから直近のエッジまで)−0.105インチ
各打撃毎に、下記の表2に従い、最も悪い損傷についてポイント値をつけた。
Claims (5)
- コアと;
前記コア上に設けられ、外表面を有し、且つ外表面に沿って複数のディンプルを画成するカバー層を有し、前記ディンプルの少なくとも一つは前記ディンプルがカバー層を貫通するように画成されているゴルフボール。 - コアと;
前記コア上に設けられたマントル層と;
前記マントル層上に設けられ、外表面を有し、且つ外表面に沿って複数のディンプルを画成するカバー層を有し、前記ディンプルの少なくとも一つは、前記カバー層と前記マントル層と、前記コアにより、前記ディンプルがマントル層を貫通するようにして画成されているゴルフボール。 - コアと;
前記コア上に設けられたマントル層と;
前記マントル層上に設けられ、外表面を有し、且つ外表面に沿って複数のディンプルを画成するカバー層を有し、前記ディンプルの少なくとも一つは、前記カバー層を貫通し、且つ、第1の直径を持つ円形縁部と第1の曲率半径により画成される第1の領域と、第2の直径を持つ円形縁部と第2の曲率半径により画成される第2の領域を含み、ゴルフボールの直径に沿って延びる方向において見たとき、前記第1の領域は、第1の形状をなし、前記第2の領域は第2の形状をなすゴルフボール。 - 前記第1の領域の形状は前記第2の領域の形状と同一である請求項3に記載のゴルフボール。
- 前記コアと前記カバー層の間に設けられたマントル層を有し、前記カバー層を貫通する前記複数のディンプルの一部は前記マントル層も貫通している請求項4に記載のゴルフボール。
