【0002】

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a spatial light modulation device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A conventional spatial light modulator has a structure for applying an electric field above and below an electro-optic medium.
[0003]
In addition, ASIA DISPLAY98 p. 371, a vertical electric field type liquid crystal display mode called FFS mode, SID98 DIGEST p. 389, a lateral electric field type liquid crystal display mode called IPS mode has been developed.
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, in such a conventional spatial light modulator, if a fine pixel is to be realized, it is difficult to obtain a high-definition modulation pixel due to a leakage electric field and orientation interference from adjacent pixels. There was a problem that there was.
[0005]
The present invention has been made to solve such a conventional problem, and an object thereof is to provide a spatial light modulation device having high-definition modulation pixels.
[0006]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
In order to achieve the above object, it is preferable that a pixel is formed by a plurality of electrodes, a switching element is formed on each electrode, and the pixels are formed in a matrix. Further, it is preferable that a plurality of wirings are formed connected to the switching element, and a driving circuit is formed connected to each wiring.
[0007]
With such a configuration, the voltage control of the pixel in the minute amount region can be performed by the switching element. More preferable control is possible by connecting switching elements to all the electrodes present in the pixel region.
[0008]
The spatial modulation device according to the present invention is an active matrix substrate in which a plurality of pixel regions having a plurality of electrodes for applying a potential to an electro-optic medium are formed, and the first of the plurality of electrodes in one pixel region. A switching element connected to one electrode and a pixel separator that divides each pixel region, and a second electrode adjacent to the first electrode among the plurality of electrodes is the one pixel region A switching element connected to the first electrode and a switching element connected to the third electrode, each of which includes an extension portion of a third electrode connected to the switching element in another pixel region adjacent to the switching element. Are connected to the same gate line.
[0009]
According to this, even with a spatial light modulator having a higher density pixel structure, it is possible to configure a spatial light modulator related to a highly accurate amplitude and phase that excludes the influence of adjacent pixels.
[0010]
The electrodes may be formed on the same or adjacent planes, that is, on different layers with an insulating layer interposed therebetween.
[0011]
According to this, a high-density pixel can be realized by freely applying a microfabrication process.
[0012]
Further, the first electrode has a reflection characteristic.
[0013]
According to this, the active matrix substrate does not need to be transparent, and a reflective high-density pixel can be realized.
[0014]
The electro-optic medium is a liquid crystal.
[0015]
According to this, it is possible to realize a high-density pixel in which the influence of the orientation of adjacent pixels is blocked by the pixel separator.
[0016]
Furthermore, the spatial light modulator is provided in which the pixel separator is a photopolymerized polymer.
[0017]
According to this, the adjacent pixels can be finely divided, and the influence of the orientation of the adjacent pixels can be eliminated.
[0018]
The active matrix substrate is a silicon wafer on which MOS transistors are formed.
[0019]
According to this, a high-definition pixel can be realized by freely applying a microfabrication process of Si.
[0020]
Moreover, it is preferable that at least one of the electrodes constituting the pixel is connected to a switching element.
[0021]
According to this, it is possible to perform optical modulation related to amplitude and phase with high accuracy that excludes the influence of adjacent pixels.
[0022]
Further, it is preferable that at least one of the electrodes constituting the pixel is connected to a switching element, and the other driving electrode is connected to a wiring having a specific potential.
[0023]
According to this, it is possible to perform optical modulation related to amplitude and phase with high accuracy that excludes the influence of adjacent pixels.
[0024]
An active matrix substrate in which a plurality of pixel regions having a plurality of electrodes for applying an electric potential to an electro-optic medium are formed, and a switching element connected to one of the plurality of electrodes in one pixel region And the other electrode of the plurality of electrodes in the one pixel region is connected to a gate line adjacent to the gate line to which the switching element is connected.
[0025]
According to this, an equivalent device structure can be realized with fewer wires.
[0026]
The switching element may be installed so as to overlap the pixel separator.
[0027]
According to this, it is possible to realize a high-definition pixel in which a decrease in the aperture ratio is suppressed and the aperture ratio is not affected by the electrode size.
[0028]
Moreover, it is preferable that the said electrode which comprises a pixel is connected to the switching element for an adjacent pixel drive, respectively.
[0029]
According to this, an equivalent device structure can be realized with fewer wires and fewer elements.
[0030]
Further, the signal line for sending display data to the switching element connected to the first electrode is provided with a drive signal for giving a signal corresponding to the difference potential of the display data string.
[0031]
According to this, it is possible to realize a device structure with a small leakage electric field between laterally adjacent pixels.
[0032]

In the case of FIGS. 1 and 2, the drive electrodes are formed on the same plane, but may have a quasi-planar structure in which an insulating layer is sandwiched between the electrodes.

Table 1 shows a more specific configuration adopted in this example.

[0042]
An active matrix substrate using a Si wafer is Nikkei Electronics, 1981, 2.16 p. The manufacturing method is the same as that described in 164, but the electrode arrangement corresponding to the pixel is different as shown in FIGS.
[0043]
The pixel separator is SID96 DIGEST p. The method of dissolving the photosensitive monomer described in No. 611 in the liquid crystal and using phase separation between the liquid crystal and the polymer, or the method of directly forming the monomer by mask exposure to ultraviolet light and photopolymerization was adopted. .
[0044]
FIG. 3 shows an example of the pixel circuit configuration of the spatial light modulator employed in this embodiment. The
[0045]
As described above, a lateral electric field generated in parallel between the electrodes or a vertical electric field generated in parallel on the electrodes (parallel to the paper surface) is applied to the electro-optic medium. The ECB mode or TN mode liquid crystal shown in Table 1 can be employed as a typical electro-optic medium. Usually, these liquid crystal modes use a vertical electric field generated between a common electrode disposed opposite to the pixel electrode. In this embodiment, an electric field generated between at least two pixel electrodes on the active matrix substrate is used. Use. On the other hand, the influence of the orientation of adjacent pixels is blocked by the pixel separator.
[0046]
In FIG. 3, an initial alignment process is performed on the active matrix substrate so that the liquid crystal becomes 308, and the liquid crystal director is twisted in the plane by a horizontal electric field. The alignment process on the counter substrate side is either anti-parallel to 308 or a process perpendicular to the substrate.
[0047]
FIG. 4 shows an example of a pixel circuit configuration in which the common potential line 407 is shared with the electrodes on both sides. For the sake of simplicity, the auxiliary capacitor connected to the drain of the transistor is not drawn. The
[0048]
FIG. 5 is a configuration example of a pixel circuit using the gate line potential of the previous X pixel row without using the common potential line. For simplicity, the auxiliary capacitance connected to the drain of the transistor is not drawn. The operation is the same as in FIG.
[0049]
FIG. 6 shows an example of a structure in which all electrode potentials are controlled by transistors without using a common potential line. For the sake of simplicity, the auxiliary capacitor connected to the drain of the transistor is not drawn. 3, 4, and 5, the potential of the electrode paired with the transistor side electrode is basically a fixed potential, but in FIG. 6, all the electrodes are independently given potential. Since one
[0050]
FIG. 7 shows another configuration driven by the same difference signal. In FIG. 6, one pixel is composed of two transistors and two electrodes, but in the structure of FIG. 7, a part of adjacent pixel electrodes is physically divided as drive electrodes by a pixel separator. Therefore, one pixel is effectively one transistor and one electrode, which is advantageous in that the number of transistors can be reduced by half compared to the configuration of FIG. In addition, since the transistor, the source wiring, the gate wiring, and the auxiliary capacitor can be installed under the pixel separator and on the active matrix side, that is, in a planarly overlapping position, a reduction in the pixel area ratio (aperture ratio) can be suppressed. Further, there is an effect that the aperture ratio is not limited to the size of the electrode. Since the potential is the same as that of adjacent pixels, there is also a merit that the influence of the leakage electric field is small. Further, when the active matrix substrate is a transparent substrate on which TFTs are formed, a light shielding layer covering transistors, source wirings, gate wirings, and auxiliary capacitance portions can be used as a self-alignment mask when forming a pixel separator.
[0051]
FIG. 8 shows an example of a pixel circuit configuration in which an adjacent selection signal line (for example, a gate wiring corresponding to a pixel row that is the previous X line) is used as a grounding destination of the auxiliary capacitor. That is, after the previous line is selected, the gate wiring of the previous line is often set to a fixed potential.

Next, a driving method using the differential potential used in FIGS. 6, 7, and 8 will be described.

Such a drive for applying a difference potential has a feature that the potential applied to the pixel is easily converted to an alternating current even in the case of a large painting, and can prevent deterioration due to the direct current applied to the electro-optic medium.
[0056]
Although the embodiments of the present invention have been described above, the present invention can be applied not only to the simple electrode shapes described in the embodiments but also to various shapes such as a comb-tooth shape and an orthogonal shape. In the present invention, the pixel configuration is divided not only by the electrodes but also by a physical separation means, so that a finer pixel can be formed. In addition, it can be widely applied to optical information processing and display devices.
