Abstract
【解決手段】 スメクティック液晶に光重合性のネマティック相を示すモノマー液晶を添加した混合物の相系列として等方相−ネマティック相−スメクティック相を誘起させる工程と、前記混合物にUV光照射を行い、モノマーを光重合・高分子化させて、一様配向構造のスメクティック液晶媒質を生成する工程とを施す。

Description
〔1〕スメクティック液晶素子の製造方法において、(a)スメクティック液晶に光重合性のネマティック相を示すモノマー液晶を添加した混合物の相系列として等方相−ネマティック相−スメクティック相を誘起させる工程と、(b)前記混合物にUV光照射を行い、モノマーを光重合・高分子化させて、一様配向構造のスメクティック液晶媒質を生成する工程とを施すことを特徴とする。
〔2〕上記〔1〕記載のスメクティック液晶素子の製造方法において、高分子が上記(b)工程において配向構造を記憶し安定化させるテンプレートの働きをなし、上記(b)工程後の等方相への転移によっても、相転移以前と全く変化しない一様配向構造のスメクティック液晶媒質を等方相から直接得ることを特徴とする。
〔3〕スメクティック液晶素子であって、上記〔1〕又は〔2〕記載のスメクティック液晶素子の製造方法によって製造される。
〔4〕上記〔1〕記載のスメクティック液晶素子の製造方法において、前記スメクティック液晶が、4−cyano−4’−dodecylbiphenylであり、前記光重合性のネマティック相を示すモノマー液晶を30wt%添加することを特徴とする。
〔5〕上記〔3〕記載のスメクティック液晶素子において、ラビング配向膜が形成された上下ガラス基板を有する液晶セル構造を具備する。
〔6〕上記〔5〕記載のスメクティック液晶素子において、前記上下ガラス基板のラビング配向膜のラビング方向が同一方向になるように構成する。
〔7〕上記〔5〕記載のスメクティック液晶素子において、前記液晶セルギャップが2μmである。

Claims (3)
- (a)スメクティック液晶に光重合性のネマティック相を示すモノマー液晶を添加した混合物の相系列として等方相−ネマティック相−スメクティック相を誘起させる工程と、
(b)前記混合物にUV光照射を行い、モノマーを光重合・高分子化させて、一様配向構造のスメクティック液晶媒質を生成する工程とを施すことを特徴とするスメクティック液晶素子の製造方法。 - 請求項1記載のスメクティック液晶素子の製造方法において、高分子が上記(b)工程において配向構造を記憶し安定化させるテンプレートの働きをなし、上記(b)工程後の等方相への転移によっても、相転移以前と全く変化しない一様配向構造のスメクティック液晶媒質を等方相から直接得ることを特徴とするスメクティック液晶素子の製造方法。
- 請求項1又は2記載のスメクティック液晶素子の製造方法によって製造されるスメクティック液晶素子。
