【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【従来技術、発明が解決しようとする課題】本発明はビ
デオ用の遠距離通信装置に関するものであり、詳述する
と、ビデオプログラムを分配する装置に関するものであ
る。
【０００２】PPV ( Pay-per-View、 視聴支払い方式）網
が衛星放送または局所分配系で送信できる。あるPPV 網
は複数のチャンネルを提供するが、PPV 網は通常唯一つ
のプログラムチャンネルしか与えない。
【０００３】複数のプログラムを、少なくとも対応する
チャンネル数を有する商業的に入手可能な機器およびい
ずれの伝送系をも使用して分配する能力を有するPPV 装
置を提供することが所望されている。
【０００４】
【発明の概要】したがって、複数のチャンネルを通じて
ビデオプログラムを分配する装置であって、複数のチャ
ンネルを有する伝送系と、タイミング命令を有する所定
のスケジュールを表示する記憶されたデータベースと、
当該データベースのタイミング命令に応答して実時間出
力を提供するようプログラムされたコンピュータと、当
該コンピュータに接続された入力部を有しており、前記
実時間出力に応答して制御信号を提供するバスと、テレ
ビジョン形式のプログラムを包含する記録媒体と、前記
記録媒体を再生する複数のビデオプレーヤであって、そ
れぞれのビデオプレーヤは、前記バスに結合された制御
ポートを有しておりそして前記制御信号に応答し、そし
て個別の対応するチャンネルに結合されるテレビジョン
信号を提供する出力を有しており、当該ビデオプレーヤ
のうち少なくとも２つは、二重記録された媒体がロード
されそして第１および第２のチャンネルで互い違いの一
部重複した時間間隔にて再生するよう制御される当該複
数のビデオプレーヤと、チャンネルに対する下流方向の
アクセスを提供するアクセス手段とを有するビデオプロ
グラム分配装置が提供される。

【実施例】先ず第１図を参照するとビデオプログラムを
分配する装置１０の模式図が図示されている。装置１０
は、複数のチャンネルを有する伝送系１３のヘッドエン
ド１２へ接続されたビデオサービス提供体ないしビデオ
サーバー１１と下流側のコンバータ１４とを有する。
【０００６】第２図は、他にもいくつかの要素があるけ
れども、サービス提供用コンピュータ１５およびソフト
ウエア、制御バス１６および複数のビデオプレーヤ１７
を備えたビデオサーバー１１のブロック図である。
【０００７】サービス提供用コンピュータ１５は、ビデ
オプレーヤ１７について全スケジュール策定機能および
制御機能（たとえば、始動、停止、巻戻しなどの機能）
を遂行しかつビデオプレーヤ使用データを収集する。サ
ービス提供用コンピュータ１５は、タイミング命令を含
む所定のスケジュールデータを表すスケジュール用デー
タベースがロードされる。サービス提供コンピュータ１
５はこれらのタイミング命令に応答して実時間出力ない
しリアルタイム出力を提供するようプログラムされてい
る。スケジュール用データベースは磁性記憶装置１９に
てサービス提供コンピュータ１５へ提供可能でありまた
はスケジュール用コンピュータ２０から直接転送せられ
ることも可能である。プログラムスケジュール用データ
ベースは、（それぞれのプログラムを表示するための）
５桁のイベントコード、タイトル、視聴率(rating)、チ
ャンネル、開始時間、日付、走行時間および価格を含
む。
【０００８】サービスコンピュータ１５はビデオプレー
ヤ１７の状況をも監視しそして販促用チャンネルビデオ
プレーヤ１８を操作する。操作がメニューを介して制御
される。プリンタ２１が各ビデオプレーヤ１７に配され
るプログラムを列挙したハードコピーを印刷する。オペ
レータ用の表示装置がビデオプレーヤの状況のモニタを
行なう。状況スクリーンがビデオ録画再生機械が再生し
ているか、巻き戻しているか、再生開始を待っている
か、使用されていないか、準備中かまたは機能停止状態
かどうかを指示する。ビデオプレーヤ故障時間中の警報
設備が包摂せられる。モニター装置（図示せず）が、選
択されるチャンネル上に何があるかを表示する。
【０００９】商用の並列バス１６が、サービス提供コン
ピュータ１５の出口ポートとビデオプレーヤ１７、１８
との間の通信路を提供し、サービス提供コンピュータ１
５がビデオプレーヤの制御機能を自動的に操作するのを
可能にする。バス１６は、コンピュータ１５の実時間出
力に応答して制御信号を提供する一つまたはそれ以上の
バスコントローラパネルを包摂する。これらは順次、そ
れぞれがいくつかのビデオプレーヤを制御できる複数の
ビデオプレーヤ用並列復号器を作動する。
【００１０】ビデオプレーヤ１７が、テレビジョン形式
のプログラムを包含する記録媒体を再生するか、または
生プログラムからのラインフィードを結合するのに使用
される。ビデオプレーヤ１７は、ビデオカセットレコー
ダ（VCR)やディスクプレーヤなどのいずれの制御可能な
プレーヤでもよい。事前記録式ビデオカセット形式のも
のがビデオ記憶用の最も豊富な媒体である。ビデオカセ
ットプレーヤが、テープの自動巻き戻しおよび録画再生
を行なうためにソフトウエアにより制御可能である。光
ディスクプレーヤの魅力ある特徴がディスクを読取る多
重再生ヘッドの能力である。
【００１１】各ビデオプレーヤはバス１６へ結合された
制御ポートを有しそして制御信号に応答する。各ビデオ
プレーヤは伝送系のヘッドエンドを介して個別の対応す
るチャンネルへ結合するテレビジョン信号を提供する出
力をも有する。
【００１２】ビデオプレーヤ１７は予め選択される時間
に開始するビデオ選択物を再生する。各プレーヤは異な
る開始時間に設定できる。開始時間には、媒体が、（必
ずしも媒体の始めである必要はない）アクティブプログ
ラムの開始時に再生される。プログラムの終了時には媒
体は必要に応じて自動的に巻き戻されそしてプログラム
開始に向けて設定される。
【００１３】複数のビデオプレーヤ１７のうちの少なく
とも２つが二重記録された媒体のロードを受けそして互
い違いに一部重複した時間間隔にて再生するよう制御さ
れる。
【００１４】媒体は２つの状況のうちの一つでビデオサ
ービス提供体で変化せられる。第１の状況は、異なるプ
ログラムが所定時間にそして所定チャンネルで開始しそ
れゆえ現行のビデオ媒体は除去され且つ新規な媒体が挿
入されるべきことをスケジュールが指示するという状況
である。第２の状況は、もし媒体が使用とともに劣化し
また所定回数再生されれば生ずる。このときそれは新し
いコピーと置き換えられる。
【００１５】巻き戻しなどの休止時間中に、別のソース
からの入力がビデオプレーヤを停止しそしてチャンネル
で表示されるプレーヤ出力となる。これは、ビデオプレ
ーヤがプログラムを表示または流していない時間中に、
視聴者のチャンネルが販促用チャンネルまたはテキスト
チャンネルなどの別のビデオソースを表示するのを可能
にする。販促用チャンネルの構成は後述する。
【００１６】ビデオプレーヤ１７はステレオ音再生の能
力を有する。同相分除去用の平衡化ペアを通じて音再生
機器を作動することが好ましいので、２つの音声出力が
一対の非平衡−平衡形バッファ増幅器へ接続される。各
ビデオプレーヤの出力信号がヘッドエンド１２で対応す
るチャンネルに結合される。
【００１７】各ビデオプレーヤ出力は伝送系で対応する
チャンネルに結合される。ビデオサービス提供体のビデ
オ出力はヘッドエンド１２のスクランブル手段を通じて
接続される。各信号は伝送系に配される前にヘッドエン
ドにてスクランブルされる。
【００１８】ビデオサービス提供体１１は販促用チャン
ネルを提供する。販促用チャンネルは、各販促用セグメ
ントがプログラムよりも長さが短くそして２つの販促用
ビデオプレーヤ１８のうちの一つで連続的に再生されそ
してスクランブルされないこと以外は、プログラムと同
様に動作する。２つのプレーヤは同様の予告編セグメン
トを交互に再生する。一方が再生しているとき、他方は
巻き戻ししている。販促用チャンネルは連続的に再生し
ているように現れる。一方のビデオプレーヤから他方の
ビデオプレーヤへの切換は他方のチャンネルのコントロ
ーラ動作を妨害しない規則的な時間間隔で行なわれる。
【００１９】販促用チャンネルは、プログラム予告編、
イベント販促、注文指令およびプログラム情報などの販
促用プログラムを連続的に表示する。記録媒体が頻繁に
巻き戻しされる必要がないよう、短い宣伝セグメントが
記録媒体で連続的に反復可能であり、それにより摩耗が
減ぜられる。販促用チャンネル上の情報が、プログラム
スケジュールに従って、たとえば月ごとなど必要に応じ
て変化せられる。販促用チャンネルの動作はサービス提
供コンピュータ１５によりソフトウエア制御が行なわれ
る。
【００２０】文字発生器２２がサービス提供コンピュー
タ１５に結合されており、プログラムスケジュールを表
示するテレビジョン形式のメニューを提供する。サービ
ス提供コンピュータ１５が連続的にメニュー情報とビデ
オサービス提供体との同期をとる。文字発生器２２の出
力はヘッドエンド１２を介してスクランブルされずにテ
キストについて指定されたチャンネルへ結合される。
【００２１】文字発生器２２の出力は第１の販促用ビデ
オプレーヤの入力へも接続されている。第１の販促用ビ
デオプレーヤの出力は第２の販促用ビデオプレーヤの入
力に接続されている。第２の販促用ビデオプレーヤの出
力は宣伝物について指定されるチャンネルへ接続され
る。もし両方の販促用ビデオプレーヤ１８が再生状態に
なければ、そのとき文字発生器２２は自動的に販促用チ
ャンネルへ接続される。
【００２２】もし販促用チャンネル出力信号が複数のプ
ログラムビデオプレーヤ１７へも供給されるならば、販
促用チャンネル出力信号の増幅が行なわれる。分配用増
幅器が、販促用チャンネルを各プログラムビデオプレー
ヤのビデオ入力へ分配（もしかかる特徴が所望されるな
らば）するのに使用される。
【００２３】第１図を参照すると、プログラムおよび販
促物は伝送系１３の個別のチャンネル上で分配される。
かかる伝送系は、テレビジョン放送、衛星、ケーブルま
たはファイバとし得る。ヘッドエンド１２はプログラム
チャンネルをスクランブルするスクランブル装置２３を
包摂する。
【００２４】コンバータ１４、すなわちアクセス手段、
はチャンネルへの下流方向のアクセスを可能にする。適
当なチャンネルはプログラムの開始時に加入者のために
スクランブルされねばならない。
【００２５】好ましい注文方式は視聴ごとの衝動払いで
ある。コンバータ１４は顧客によりイネーブルとされ、
アクセスされるチャンネル上のテレビジョン信号へのア
クセス、すなわちスクランブルの解除、を行なう。コン
バータ１４は、互い違いの時間間隔で同様のプログラム
を搬送する２つのチャンネルのスクランブル解除を行な
うようイネーブルとされ得、それにより互い違いの時間
間隔に等しい休止時間後にプログラムの同じ場所へ復帰
することが可能である。たとえば、加入者が午後８時に
開始するプログラムを注文するとする。午後８時１５分
という次の開始時間に同じプログラムを有するチャンネ
ルだけでなく適当なチャンネルがスクランブルされず、
視聴者は休止後にプログラムの同じ場所へ復帰可能であ
る。
【００２６】プログラム終了後の所定の時間に、チャン
ネルは再びスクランブルされる。販促用チャンネル上の
情報はプログラムの終了時に表示されるから、次のプロ
グラムの開始時までチャンネルをスクランブルされない
状態のままにしておくことが好ましいけれども、プログ
ラムの走行時間はチャンネルをスクランブルする時間を
指示するのに使用できる。チャンネルは順次再びスクラ
ンブルされ、顧客がチャンネル上の次の見物を見ないよ
うにする。
【００２７】注文プロセスは、種々の時間に開始する種
々のプログラムの選択からの注文を可能にする。注文プ
ロセスは、イベントの前にまたはイベント内の所定の時
間までにサービス注文および取消しの両方の注文を処理
できる。
【００２８】注文装置はサービス供給前の許認可をも可
能にする。２つのタイプの許認可が預金ないしクレジッ
ト限界または親の統制に基づく許可のために提供され
る。プログラムによって相関付けられる正確な記録が、
分析を行なうために転送されるまでコンバータにより保
持される。記録は、顧客のデータ、注文されたイベント
および取消されたイベント（プログラムのタイトル、開
始日および開始時）、注文処理の時間および日、サービ
ス注文または受取りにおける障害、およびプログラムの
価格を含む。
【００２９】ヘッドエンド１２に配置された下流側コン
トローラ２４が課金データを収集した各セットトップ型
コンバータ１４を毎日調査し、予め割り当てられた数を
送出し且つ公衆交換電話網を介してヘッドエンド１２に
配置された上流側コントローラ２５へアクセスしそして
その課金データを上流側コントローラ２５へロード(upl
oad)することをコンバータ１４に要求する。上流側コン
トローラ２５は順次コンバータ１４からの課金データを
格納し且つこれをフォーマット化しそして周期的にこの
データを課金コンピュータ２６へ転送する。課金コンピ
ュータ２６は、顧客に対する各処理ごとの情報、注文さ
れたイベントコードおよびその他の必要なデータを受信
する。課金コンピュータ２６はすでにプログラムスケジ
ュールデータを有しており、イベントコードと、タイト
ル、視聴率、チャンネル、開始時間、日付け、走行時間
および値段とを識別する。課金コンピュータ２６はプロ
グラムのタイトル、データ、時間および値段を含んだ請
求書を印刷する。
【００３０】装置は、ビデオサービス提供体１１、すな
わち送信機、からのテレビジョンプログラムを、伝送系
１３を通じて、コンバータ１４へ結合された下流側のビ
デオ記録装置２８へ転送するようになされている。下流
側ビデオ記録装置２８は、ビデオサービス提供体１１の
下流側コントローラ２３からの制御信号に応答してプロ
グラムを記録する。下流側制御信号は、ケーブル、ファ
イバ、電話線で送信し得るが、テレビジョン信号は同じ
媒体で送信せられることが好ましい。
【００３１】本発明の好ましい実施例と考えられるもの
を叙述したけれども、当業者であれば、本発明の技術思
想から逸脱することなく種々の変更および修正が可能で
あることは明らかであろう。かかる変更および修正はす
べて請求の範囲に記載の本発明の技術思想内に包含され
るべきものである。

    (57)【特許請求の範囲】
  1. 【請求項１】 複数のチャンネルを通じてビデオプログ
    ラムを分配する装置において、 複数のチャンネルを有する伝送系と、 タイミング命令を有する所定のスケジュールを表示する
    記憶されたデータベースと、 当該データベースのタイミング命令に応答して実時間出
    力を提供するようプログラムされたコンピュータと、 当該コンピュータに接続された入力部を有しており、前
    記実時間出力に応答して制御信号を提供するバスと、 テレビジョン形式のプログラムを包含する記録媒体と、 前記記録媒体を再生する複数のビデオプレーヤであっ
    て、それぞれのビデオプレーヤは、前記バスに結合され
    た制御ポートを有しておりそして前記制御信号に応答
    し、そして個別の対応するチャンネルに結合されるテレ
    ビジョン信号を提供する出力を有しており、当該ビデオ
    プレーヤのうち少なくとも２つは、二重記録された媒体
    がロードされそして第１および第２のチャンネルで互い
    違いの一部重複した時間間隔にて再生するよう制御され
    る当該複数のビデオプレーヤと、 チャンネルに対する下流方向のアクセスを提供するアク
    セス手段と、 を有するビデオプログラム分配装置。
