Description
The present invention relates to a rubber member and a rubber sleeve for a mechanical pipe joint, and more particularly to a rubber member with low compression set and high elongation, and a rubber sleeve for a mechanical pipe joint using the same.
"Ethylene-propylene-diene polymer (EPDM)" is a polymer (uncrosslinked rubber) obtained by copolymerizing monomer components including ethylene (E), propylene (P), and diene monomer (D). ). When EPDM is crosslinked using various methods, rubber members having various shapes and rubber elasticity can be obtained. Rubber members obtained by crosslinking EPDM have excellent weather resistance, ozone resistance, heat resistance, etc., and are therefore used in automobile rubber products, industrial rubber products, construction rubber products, and the like.
One of the uses of the rubber member obtained by crosslinking EPDM is as a rubber sleeve for a mechanical pipe joint. A mechanical pipe joint consists of a cylindrical metal housing with a rubber sleeve fixed to the inner peripheral surface.
When the ends of the two pipes are inserted into the holes of the mechanical pipe joint and the housing is fastened with bolts and nuts, the inner diameter of the housing is reduced. As a result, the rubber sleeve comes into close contact with the outer circumferential surface of the pipe, and the two pipes can be connected while maintaining airtightness.
When two pipes are connected using a mechanical pipe joint, the rubber sleeve may become permanently deformed over time and the airtightness may deteriorate. In order to ensure airtightness over a long period of time, it is preferable to use rubber with low compression set for the rubber sleeve. Various proposals have been made regarding such rubbers with low compression set.
For example, Patent Document 1 discloses a rubber member obtained by peroxide vulcanization molding of a rubber composition containing an ethylene-propylene-diene ternary copolymer, an organic peroxide, and carbon black. There is.
The document states that by using carbon black with an iodine adsorption amount and a DBP oil absorption amount within a predetermined range, a rubber member with high damping performance, small temperature dependence of damping performance, and small compression set can be obtained. points are listed.
As described in Patent Document 1, when an ethylene-propylene-diene ternary copolymer is crosslinked with an organic peroxide, a rubber member having a relatively small compression set can be obtained. However, in general, compression set and elongation (removability) are in a contradictory relationship, and the smaller the compression set, the smaller the elongation and the worse the demoldability.
Some rubber members have relatively simple shapes, while others have complex shapes including undercuts. Therefore, when removing a rubber member including an undercut from the mold without dividing the mold after crosslinking the rubber composition in the mold, the smaller the elongation of the rubber, the more likely tearing will occur during demolding. It becomes easier.
On the other hand, when EPDM is crosslinked with sulfur, a rubber member with relatively high elongation can be obtained. However, in this case, compression set increases.
Further, there has never been an example in the past in which a rubber member that has both relatively low compression set and relatively high elongation has been proposed.
The problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a novel rubber member with low compression set and high elongation.
Another problem to be solved by the present invention is to provide a rubber sleeve for a mechanical pipe joint using such a rubber member.
In order to solve the above problems, the rubber member according to the present invention comprises:
It is obtained by crosslinking a rubber composition containing an ethylene-propylene-diene polymer (EPDM) and a crosslinking agent,
The EPDM has a diene content of 5 mass% or more,
The crosslinking agent includes an organic peroxide and sulfur.
A rubber sleeve for a mechanical pipe joint according to the present invention includes the rubber member according to the present invention.
When crosslinking is performed using an organic peroxide, the main chains are bonded via CC bonds. Therefore, when EPDM with a high diene content is crosslinked with an organic peroxide, a rubber member with low compression set can be obtained, but the elongation of the rubber member becomes small.
On the other hand, when crosslinking is performed using sulfur, the main chains are bonded via sulfur. Therefore, when EPDM with a high diene content is crosslinked with sulfur, a rubber member with high elongation can be obtained, but the compression set of the rubber member becomes large.
On the other hand, when EPDM with a high diene content is crosslinked using both an organic peroxide and sulfur, a rubber member with low compression set and high elongation can be obtained.

This is done by
[2.2. Molding process]
Next, the mixture is molded. In the present invention, the molding method is not particularly limited, and an optimal method can be selected depending on the purpose. Examples of the molding method include extrusion molding. molding method, injection molding method, etc.
[2.3. Crosslinking process]
Next, the molded body is heated to advance the crosslinking reaction. Thereby, a rubber member according to the present invention is obtained. It is preferable to select optimal heating conditions depending on the composition of the rubber composition. The heating temperature is usually 160°C to 190°C. Further, the heating time is usually 5 minutes to 50 minutes.

When the crosslinking reaction is carried out under the above conditions, the crosslinking reaction due to sulfur is almost completed, but the crosslinking reaction due to the organic peroxide may not be completed. If a rubber member is used for various purposes while the organic peroxide is not completely removed, the crosslinking reaction may proceed during use, resulting in worsening of compression set. Therefore, after carrying out the crosslinking reaction under the above conditions, it is preferable to further carry out secondary crosslinking.
The conditions for secondary crosslinking are not particularly limited, and it is preferable to select optimal conditions depending on the composition of the rubber composition. The heating temperature for secondary crosslinking is usually 150°C to 170°C. Further, the heating time for secondary crosslinking is usually 30 minutes to 120 minutes.
[3. Effect]
When crosslinking is performed using an organic peroxide, the main chains are bonded via CC bonds. Therefore, when EPDM with a high diene content is crosslinked with an organic peroxide, a rubber member with a small compression set can be obtained, but the elongation of the rubber member becomes small.

Table 2 shows the results. In addition, Table 2 also shows the raw material formulation and test piece production conditions. From Table 2, the following can be seen.
(1) Comparative Example 1 has a small compression set, but also a small elongation. This is considered to be because sulfur was not used as a crosslinking agent.
(2) Comparative Example 2 has a large elongation, but also a large compression set. This is thought to be because the amount of diene in the raw rubber is zero.
(3) Comparative Example 3 has large elongation, but also large compression set. This is thought to be due to the small amount of diene in the raw rubber.
(4) Examples 1 to 3 all exhibited an elongation of 200% or more and a compression set of 15% or less (80° C. x 240 hours in hot water). This result shows that the rubber members of Examples 1 to 3 are particularly suitable for applications that are continuously exposed to high temperature and high humidity for a long time and require low compression set.
