図6を参照しながら、メモリ回路の構成を説明する。図6は、画素Pの回路構成の例を示す図である。
図1などには、対向電極21の開口部21aをすべてのサブ画素電極11aに対応して形成する例を示したが、例えば図7に示す液晶表示装置100Aのように、一部の開口部21aが省略されてもよい。
図8および図9を参照しながら、本実施形態における液晶表示装置200を説明する。本実施形態の液晶表示装置200は、半透過型(透過反射両用型)の液晶表示装置である。図8は、液晶表示装置200を模式的に示す平面図であり、液晶表示装置200の3つの画素Pに対応した領域を示している。図9は、液晶表示装置200を模式的に示す断面図であり、図1中の9A−9A’線に沿った断面構造を示している。以下では、液晶表示装置200が実施形態1における液晶表示装置100と異なる点を中心として説明を行う。
これまでの説明では、半透過型液晶表示装置を例として本発明の実施形態を説明したが、本発明の実施形態による液晶表示装置は、反射型液晶表示装置であってもよい。つまり、2つの画素P間の領域が透過モードの表示に用いられなくてもよい。

前記液晶層は、誘電異方性が負のネマチック液晶材料およびカイラル剤を含み、
前記第1基板は、前記複数の画素のそれぞれに設けられた画素電極と、前記画素電極と前記液晶層との間に設けられた第1垂直配向膜とを有し、
前記第2基板は、前記画素電極に対向するように設けられた対向電極と、前記対向電極と前記液晶層との間に設けられた第2垂直配向膜とを有し、
前記第1垂直配向膜および前記第2垂直配向膜のうちの前記第2垂直配向膜のみがプレチルト方位を規定する配向規制力を有し、
前記画素電極は、互いに異なる電圧が印加される2つ以上のサブ画素電極を含む複数のサブ画素電極を有し、
前記対向電極は、前記複数のサブ画素電極のうちの少なくとも1つのサブ画素電極の四隅のうちの一隅に対応した領域に形成された開口部を有し、
前記少なくとも1つのサブ画素電極上の前記液晶層における厚さ方向中央に位置する液晶分子の配向方向は、前記開口部を向いている、液晶表示装置。 - 前記開口部は、前記複数のサブ画素電極のうちのすべてのサブ画素電極の四隅のうちの一隅に対応した領域に形成されている請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2基板は、前記対向電極上に設けられた突起であって、前記複数のサブ画素電極のうちの前記少なくとも1つのサブ画素電極以外のサブ画素電極の四隅のうちの一隅に対応した領域に形成された突起を有する請求項1に記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記画素電極は、光反射性を有する導電材料から形成された反射電極である請求項1から3のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記複数の画素のうちの互いに隣接する任意の2つの画素間の領域が透過モードの表示に用いられる請求項1から4のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記第2基板は、前記複数の画素のうちの互いに隣接する任意の2つの画素間にはブラックマトリクスを有しない請求項1から5のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 複数のメモリ回路をさらに備える請求項1から6のいずれかに記載の液晶表示装置。
- 前記複数のメモリ回路は、前記複数の画素のそれぞれに対応する第1メモリ回路および第2メモリ回路を含み、
前記複数のサブ画素電極は、前記第1メモリ回路に接続されたサブ画素電極と、前記第2メモリ回路に接続されたサブ画素電極とを含む請求項7に記載の液晶表示装置。
