また、発光装置402は筐体前面の凹部100の天面から底面に向けて光を照射するため、発光装置402による光が直接利用者の目に入る危険性が減少するものと期待される。
また、イメージセンサ40が下方を向いて設置されているため、イメージセンサ40に対する外来光の影響が小さくなり、コードデータなどの読取精度が向上するものと期待される。

また、図4に示すように、本変形例では、底面102の読取領域の中央部分に、情報記録媒体を置くべき位置を示すガイドランプ108が設けられている。天面106からガイド情報を投影する代わりに、底面102にガイドランプ108を設けて、情報記録媒体の載置位置を示唆してもよい。
なお、情報記録媒体が凹部100から完全に滑り落ちることを防止するために、底面102にストッパー110を設けてもよい。本変形例のストッパー110は、読取領域よりも利用者側(前面側)に設けられ、上方に突出した突起物である。
