Abstract

（発明の背景）
本発明は、テレビ番組の録画に関する。より具体的には、本発明は、テレビ番組の録画と関連して用いられるプロモーション技術に関する。
ビデオカセット録画が出現したため、個人は自分の個人的利用のためにテレビ番組を録画する機会を有した。伝統的に、これらの録画は磁気テープ上に行なわれた。最近では、録画がデジタル記憶媒体の使用によって達成されることを可能する個人用ビデオ録画が開発された。

本発明は、プロモーションを用いて録画番組を提供する方法およびシステムを提供する。
本発明の１実施形態において、システムは、信号および／またはデータを受信する１つ以上の受信器と、番組を選択し、プロモーションを選択し、および選択された番組および選択されたプロモーションの両方が録画されるようにするプロセッサと、信号および／またはデータを記憶するための記憶ユニットまたは複数の記憶ユニットと、録画番組およびプロモーションを視聴者に表示するためのディスプレイを含み得る。信号およびデータは、受信された後、プロセッサによって必要とされるまで局所的に記憶され得、必要に応じて配信機器から利用可能であり得、または放送チャンネルのビデオストリーム上で周期的に利用可能であり得る。

プロセッサは、ユーザの入力に基づいて、録画する番組を選択し得る。ユーザの入力は、特定の番組の選択を含み得る。あるいは、ユーザの入力は、ユーザの指示であり得る。ユーザの指示の入力は、プロセッサに、自動検索および録画機能を実施させ得る。ユーザの指示は、視聴時間、番組チャンネル、および／または特定の番組コンテンツ（例えば、推奨される視聴者による格付け、テレビ放送の日付および／または時間、ならびに／もしくは番組テーマ）からなり得る。指示の入力は、プロセッサに、ユーザが特定したテーマを有する全ての番組を検索するように指示し得る。例えば、ユーザは、「西部劇」を所望の番組テーマとして選択し得る。次いで、プロセッサは、西部劇に関連するテーマを有する全ての番組（例えば、「Ｂｌａｚｉｎｇ Ｓａｄｄｌｅｓ」、「Ｃｉｔｙ Ｓｌｉｃｋｅｒｓ」、「Ｔｈｅ Ｑｕｉｃｋ ａｎｄ Ｔｈｅ Ｄｅａｄ等）を検索し、選択し得る。次いで、プロセッサは、これら選択された番組を録画させ得る。指示は、双方向番組ガイド、またはオンライン番組ガイドを介して、ユーザにより入力され得る。このようなガイドの例としては、ＴＶ ＧｕｉｄｅおよびＧｅｍｓｔａｒ Ｇｕｉｄｅ Ｐｌｕｓが挙げられる。番組ガイドは、指示選択のメニューから選択を行う能力、テキストを介した直接的な入力に応じる能力、またはキーワード検索を実施する能力を備え得る。ユーザは、有線または無線の遠隔操作ユニ（例えば、キーボード、タッチスクリーンディスプレイ、または任意の他のプロセッサ入力デバイス）を介して、指示を出し得る。
プロセッサは、選択された番組の特定のコンテンツに基づいて、録画するプロモーションを選択し得る。例えば、特定のコンテンツを有する番組が録画されている場合、プロセッサは、録画されている番組のコンテンツに対応するプロモーションを選択し得る。プロセッサは、番組ガイドデータから、番組自体から、番組に付随するデータから、または任意の他の適切なソースから選択された番組のコンテンツを判断し得る。番組ガイドデータは、番組の前に、または番組と同時に受信され得る。同様に、プロセッサは、プロモーションに付随するプロモーションデータから、プロモーションとは個別に受信されたプロモーションデータから、プロモーション自体から、または任意の他の適切なソースからプロモーションのコンテンツを判断し得る。番組のコンテンツまたは番組は、タグ、サムネイル、クローズドキャプションまたは文字多重放送データ、スピーチ−テキストデータ認識（ｓｐｅｅｃｈ−ｔｏ−ｔｅｘｔ ｄａｔａ ｒｅｃｏｇｎｉｔｉｏｎ）、音声分類（例えば、スピーチおよび音楽）、クリップ記号、推奨される視聴者による格付け、番組情報表示画面、もしくは任意の他の情報により示され得る。あるいは、プロモーションは、番組に無関係であり得、時間、ユーザ人口統計、もしくは任意の他の基準に基づいて選択され得るか、または不規則に選択され得る。
次いで、プロセッサは、選択されたプログラムおよび選択されたプロモーションを記憶媒体に録画し得る。選択されたプロモーションは、最初、最後、最初および最後、もしくは録画される番組内の任意の他の所望のポイントまたは複数のポイントに録画され得る。番組の録画中に選択されたプロモーションの挿入により、プロセッサは、番組の全てまたは一部を記憶ユニット内にバッファリングし得る。プロモーションが挿入された後、次いでプロセッサは、番組の残りの部分を記憶ユニットから録画し得る。番組は、番組の信号またはデータ内の１以上のタグ付けされたプロモーションポイントを用いて、１つまたは複数の番組がどこに挿入されるべきかを示し得る。これらのプロモーションポイントは、番組内の最初、最後、最初および最後、もしくは任意の他の所望のポイントまたは複数のポイントに位置し得る。例えば、複数の番組を録画する場合、１以上のプロモーションが番組の間に録画され得る。
記憶ユニットまたは複数の記憶ユニットは、信号およびデータ（例えば、番組、プロモーション、番組ガイドおよび番組データ、ビデオ録画、ならびに任意の他の所望のコンテンツおよび／またはデータ）を記憶するために用いられ得る。
各記憶ユニットは、ユーザのテレビ視聴機器にローカルに、または近くに（例えば、ユーザの家の中に、またはユーザの家の近くのケーブルノードに）位置し得るか、もしくは記憶ユニットへの番組、プロモーション、およびデータの記憶が、通信ネットワークを介して、プロセッサにより制御され得るように、ユーザのテレビ視聴機器からリモートに位置し得る。記憶ユニットがローカルに位置する場合には、再生中に、プロセッサが、番組、プロモーション、またはデータを記憶ユニットから取り出し、ユーザに表示し得る。記憶ユニットがリモートに位置する場合には、再生中に、記憶ユニットが、番組、プロモーション、またはデータがユーザに表示され得るように、通信ネットワークを介して、番組、プロモーション、またはデータを送信し得る。
録画された番組の再生を容易にするために、双方向ユーザインターフェースが、ユーザが再生のために録画された番組を選択できるように提供され得る。このインターフェースは、記憶媒体の各部分の最初にフラッグを記録し得る。例えば、ビデオカセットを用いて、録画をするたびに、フラッグを録画の最初に記録し得る。プロモーションが番組の最初に録画される場合、フラッグはプロモーションの最初に記録され得る。次いで、フラッグは、次の再生中に、番組の最初を識別するために用いられ得る。例えば、以前に録画された番組のリストが、双方向ユーザインターフェースにおいて、ユーザに提示される場合、ユーザがリストから番組を選択すると、本発明は、ビデオカセット等の記憶媒体を、対応するフラッグへと巻き戻しまたは早送りし、次のフラッグが検出されるまで番組を再生し得る。
本発明の別の実施形態では、システムが、番組を選択し、プロモーションを選択し、番組を録画させ、選択された番組のディスプレイ上での再生中に、録画された番組および選択されたプロモーションの統合を制御するプロセッサを含み得る。
上記で詳述したように、プロセッサは、番組を選択および録画し、プロモーションを選択し得る。プロセッサはまた、選択された番組の再生中に、プロモーションをプロモーションポイントに挿入することにより、録画された番組の再生を制御し得る。プロセッサは、番組の信号またはデータ内のタグを用いるか、もしくは任意の他の適切な方法を用いて、プロモーションポイントを判断し得る。録画された番組の再生中に、選択されたプロモーションが挿入されることにより、プロセッサに、例えば、録画された番組の再生を止めるための一旦停止または停止命令もしくは信号を送信させ得る。その後、プロモーションが挿入および再生され、次いで、プロセッサは、録画された番組の残りの部分または複数の部分の再生を継続するための命令または信号を送信し得る。
図１は、本発明の様々な実施形態を実施するために用いられ得るシステム１００のブロック図である。システム１００は、番組放送装置１１０と、プロモーション放送装置１２０と、ガイドデータ放送装置１３０と、通信ネットワーク１４０と、ユーザ装置１５０と、通信リンク１６０とを含み得る。放送装置１１０、１２０および１３０は、番組信号、プロモーション信号、番組ガイド信号および／または他の任意の所望の信号またはデータを供給する、任意の適した装置、たとえばビデオまたはデータサーバ、生放送装置、ビデオテーププレーヤなどであり得、ケーブルヘッドエンドまたはその他の任意の都合のよい場所に設置され得る。さらに、放送装置１１０、１２０および１３０は結合されて単一の放送ユニットとされ得る。
通信ネットワーク１４０は、信号および／またはデータを、放送装置１１０、１２０および１３０へ、および／または放送装置１１０、１２０および１３０から送信する任意の適したネットワークであり得る。たとえば、ネットワーク１４０は、インターネット、衛星通信システム、ケーブルシステム、ローカルエリアネットワーク、ワイドエリアネットワークなど、あるいはこれらの任意の組み合わせであり得る。通信ネットワーク１４０は、デジタルまたはアナログ技術、あるいはこれらの組み合わせを用い得る。
ユーザ装置１５０は、放送装置１１０、１２０および１３０から受信した、および／または、放送装置１１０、１２０および１３０に送信した信号および／またはデータを受信、処理および表示する任意の適した装置であり得る。たとえば、ユーザ装置１５０は、一方向または双方向セットトップボックス、処理および記録能力を有するテレビ、パーソナルビデオレコーダ、適切な処理能力を有するビデオカセットレコーダ、パーソナルコンピュータなどであり得る。
通信リンク１６０は、データおよび／または信号を通信する任意の適したリンク、たとえば、ダイヤルアップ接続、光ファイバケーブル、同軸ケーブル、ＤＳＬ接続など、あるいはこれらの任意の組み合わせであり得る。
図１には示さないが、システム１００はさらに、番組、プロモーション、および番組を記憶するために用いられ得る１以上の遠隔記憶ユニットを含み得る。これらの遠隔記憶ユニットは、番組、プロモーション、ならびに番組放送装置１１０、プロモーション放送装置１２０、およびガイドデータ放送装置１３０からのデータを受信し得、放送装置１１０、１２０および１３０並びにユーザ装置１５０のいずれかによって制御され得、通信ネットワーク１４０を介してユーザ装置１５０に、番組、プロモーションおよびデータを提供し得る。
図２は、図１に示すユーザ装置１５０のブロック図である。ユーザ装置１５０は、本発明の様々な実施形態に従って用いられ得る。ユーザ装置１５０は、受信器２２０と、プロセッサ２７０と、記憶ユニット２３０、２４０、２５０および２６０と、リモートコントロールユニット２８０と、リモートコントロールインターフェース２９０と、ビデオ回路２１５と、ディスプレイ２２５とを含み得る。受信器２２０は、番組信号、プロモーション信号、番組ガイドデータ、および／またはその他の任意の所望の信号またはデータを受信する任意の適した装置であり得る。図示しないが、受信器２２０には、番組信号、プロモーション信号、番組ガイドデータおよび／またはその他の任意の信号またはデータを送信する送信器が備えられ得る。プロセッサ２７０は、ユーザ入力信号を受け入れ、番組を選択し、プロモーションを選択し、選択された番組および選択されたプロモーションを記録する、任意の適した装置であり得る。記憶ユニット２３０、２４０、２５０および２６０はそれぞれ、番組、プロモーション、番組ガイド、および記録データを記憶するために用いられ得る。記憶ユニット２３０、２４０、２５０および２６０のいずれかが、信号および／またはデータを電子的に記憶することができる任意のデバイス（たとえば、別個のビデオカセットレコーダ、ディスクドライブ、メモリカードなど）であり得る。記憶ユニット２３０、２４０、２５０および２６０は、所望であればさらに組み合わされて単一の記憶ユニットとされ得る。リモートコントロールユニット２８０は、キーボード、タッチスクリーンディスプレイ、フロントパネル、またはユーザがデータを入力するために用い得る、その他の任意の有線または無線デバイスであり得る。リモートコントロールインターフェース２９０は、リモートコントロールユニット２８０から信号を受信し、その後、その信号をプロセッサ２７０に送信する。リモートコントロールインターフェース２９０は、たとえば、光検出器であり得る。ビデオ回路２１５は、プロセッサ２７０からのデータをディスプレイ２２５上に表示されるビデオ信号に変換する、任意の適した回路であり得る。最後に、ディスプレイ２２５は、画像を視聴者に提示する任意の適したデバイス、たとえば、テレビ、モニタ、コンピュータモニタ、パーソナルデータアシスタントなどであり得る。
図３は、本発明の様々な実施形態によるプロセス３００のフローチャートである。図示するように、プロセス３００は、ステップ３１０において、記録すべき番組を選択することによって開始され得る。上述したように、選択は、ユーザによる番組の特定の選択、またはユーザによるテーマまたはその他の指定項目の選択に基づき得る。次に、ステップ３２０において、プロセス３００は、記録すべきプロモーションを選択し得る。プロモーションの選択は、記録すべき番組の内容に基づき得る。あるいは、プロモーションの選択は、記録すべき番組の内容とは無関係になされ得る。最後に、ステップ３３０において、プロセス３００は、選択した番組と選択したプロモーションとを記録し得る。選択した番組および選択したプロモーションは、任意の適した記憶ユニット、たとえば、別個のビデオカセットレコーダ、ディスクドライブまたはメモリカードなどに記録され得る。上述したように、記憶ユニットは、局所的にユーザのテレビ視聴装置に、またはその近傍に設けられ得る。あるいは、記憶ユニットは、ユーザのテレビ視聴装置から離れて設けられ得る。最後に、ステップ３４０において、番組およびプロモーションは、ユーザの要求に応じてディスプレイ上に再生され得る。
図４は、本発明の様々な実施形態において、記録すべき番組を選択するために用いられ得るインタラクティブ番組ガイドグリッドディスプレイスクリーン４１０を示す。スクリーン４１０は、タイムバー４２０と日付セル４４０とを含み得る。タイムバー４２０は、水平方向に並べられた複数の時間セル４３０に分割され得る。各時間セル４３０は、テレビプログラミングの３０分間（またはその他の任意の適した時間）に対応し得る。日付セル４４０は、ディスプレイスクリーン４１０で特定されたテレビ番組の放送日を特定する。スクリーン４１０はさらにチャンネルバー４５０を含み得、チャンネルバー４５０は、垂直方向に並べられた複数のチャンネルセル４６０に分割される。チャンネルセル４６０は、表示された番組が放送される（またはされている）チャンネルを特定し得る。スクリーン４１０はさらに、番組グリッド４７０を含み得る。番組グリッド４７０は、複数の番組セル４８０に分割され得る。各番組セル４８０は、特定のテレビ番組名を含み得、選択可能であり得る。各セルの幅は、対応する番組の長さに対応し得る。セル４８５内の番組は、リモートコントロールユニット２８０上の矢印キーを用いてセルをハイライトし、リモートコントロール上の記録キーを押すことによって、記録することが選択され得る。
次に、図５を参照して、番組を指定して、テーマおよび／またはキーワード別に録画するために用いられ得る、番組指定画面５００が説明される。番組指定画面５００は、テーマ選択メニュー５１０およびキーワード検索メニュー５２０を含み得る。メニュー５１０および５２０によって、ユーザが番組検索基準を規定することが可能になる。テーマ選択メニュー５１０は、個別に選択可能であり、ユーザが特定のテーマを含む番組を検索することを可能にし得るテーマ選択セル５１５および５１６を含む。テーマセル５１６は、選択されたテーマセルを表す。キーワード検索メニュー５２０は、ユーザが英数字のテキストを入力して、特定の内容の番組を検索することを可能にするキーワード検索セル５２５を含み得る。メニュー５１０および５２０は、共に用いられてもよいし、別々に用いられてもよい。検索セル５２８は、ユーザの番組検索を開始するために用いられ得る。
また、画面５００は、ユーザの番組検索の結果を表示する番組リスト５３０を含み得る。番組リスト５３０は、番組情報を表示する番組セル５３５および５３６を含み得る。１つ以上の番組セルは、選択された番組セル５３６によって示すように、選択されたテーマまたは検索した用語に基づいて、自動的に選択され得る。録画ボタン５６０は、録画を開始するために用いられ得る。また、番組リスト５３０は、格付け（例えば、Ｇ、ＰＧ、ＰＧ−１３、Ｒ）に従って、番組セルをカテゴリー分けする、番組格付けセル５３７を含み得る。番組リスト５３０は、番組検索選択基準を満たす番組の数を識別する、番組リストヘッダ５４０をさらに含み得る。
さらに、番組指定画面５００は、ユーザが番組検索基準を満たし、番組リスト５３０内に表示された番組を分類することを可能にする、分類メニュー５５０をも含み得る。分類メニュー５５０は、ユーザが分類技術を選択することを可能にする分類セル５５５および５５６を含み得る。例えば、ユーザの検索基準を満たす番組は、視聴時間、格付け、アルファベット順の配列などによって分類され得る。選択された分類セル５５６によって示されるように、１つ以上の分類セルが選択され得る。分類開始セル５５８が用いられて、ユーザの選択した分類技術が開始される。
画面４１０および５００は、録画される番組を指定するために用いられ得る、例示的な画面および方法にすぎない。任意の適切な画面および方法が、本発明と共に用いられ得る。
図６は、プロモーションが番組の最初に録画され得、本発明の様々な実施形態を実施するために用いられ得る、プロセス６００のフローチャートである。プロセス６００は、工程６２０で選択された番組の録画を開始する前の工程６１０でのプロモーションの録画を示す。
図７は、番組中のある時点でプロモーションが録画され得、本発明の様々な実施形態を実施するために用いられ得る、プロセス７００のフローチャートである。プロセス７００は、工程７１０で、番組録画の開始を示し、工程７２０で、番組録画中のある時点でのプロモーションの録画を示し、工程７３０で、番組録画の終了を示す。
図８は、番組の最後にプロモーションが録画され得、本発明の様々な実施形態を実施するために用いられ得る、プロセス８００のフローチャートである。プロセス８００は、工程８１０で、番組の録画を示し、工程８２０で、番組録画の終了後のプロモーションの録画を示す。
図９は、番組の最初および最後に、プロモーションが録画され得、本発明の様々な実施形態を実施するために用いられ得る、プロセス９００のフローチャートである。プロセス９００は、工程９１０で、番組の最初での第１のプロモーションの録画を示し、工程９２０で、番組の録画を示し、工程９３０で、第２のプロモーションの録画を示す。
図１０は、番組の最初、録画中のある時点、および最後で、プロモーションが録画され得、本発明の様々な実施形態を実施するために用いられ得る、プロセス１０００のフローチャートである。プロセス１０００は、工程１０１０で、番組の最初での第１のプロモーションの録画を示し、工程１０２０で、番組の第１の部分の録画を示し、工程１０３０で、番組中のある時点での第２のプロモーションの録画を示し、工程１０４０で、番組の第２の部分の録画を示し、工程１０５０で、番組の最後での第３のプロモーションの録画を示す。
プロセス６００、７００、８００、９００、および１０００は、任意の適切な組合せで用いられて、番組の前、途中、および／または後に、複数のプロモーションが録画される。
図１１は、録画した番組の再生中にプロモーションを統合し、本発明の様々な実施形態を実現するために用いられ得るプロセス１１００を示す。図示したように、工程１１０２で、プロセス１１００は、録画する番組を選択することによって開始し得る。録画する番組を選択することは、任意の適切な様態、例えば、図４および５に関して説明した様態で行われ得る。次に、工程１１０４で、プロセス１１００は、番組を録画し得る。番組の録画を開始した後、任意の時点で、番組の録画が完了する前でも、工程１１０６で、番組の再生が開始され得る。好ましくは、再生は、ユーザからのコマンドに応答して開始されるが、再生は、自動的に開始されてもよい。
次に、テスト１１０８において、プロセス１１００は、プロモーションを再生するか否かを決定し得る。プロモーションを再生するか否かの決定は、任意の適切な基準を用いて行われ得る。プロモーションが再生される場合、プロセス１１００は、次に、工程１１１２で、プロモーションを再生し得る。しかし、プロモーションが再生されない場合には、プロセスは、テスト１１１４で、再生が完了したか否かを決定し得る。再生が完了した場合、プロセス１１００は、工程１１０２に戻って、他の番組が録画のために選択されることを待機する。
テスト１１１４で、再生が完了しないと決定される場合、または、工程１１１２で、プロモーションを再生した後、プロセス１１００は、テスト１１１６で、番組の一部分を再生するか否かを決定する。番組の一部分（例えば、番組の前半、番組の後半、番組全体、または番組の任意の他の部分）が再生される場合、プロセス１１００は、工程１１１８で、その部分を再生する。工程１１１８で、その部分が再生された後、または、テスト１１１６で、再生される部分がないことが決定される場合、プロセス１１１０は、テスト１１０８に戻る。
このように、録画した番組と共にプロモーションを提供するシステムおよび方法が提供される。当業者であれば、本発明が、限定するためではなく、例示するために説明された上記の実施形態以外の実施形態によって実施され得ることを理解し、本発明は、特許請求の範囲によってのみ限定されることを理解する。
