「低分子」ホスト材料の特定の例は、Ikai et al. (Appl. Phys. Lett., 79 no. 2, 2001, 156)に開示される、CBPとして知られる4,4’−ビス(カルバゾール−9イル)ビフェニル)、及びTCTAとして知られる(4,4’,4”−トリス(カルバゾール−9−イル)トリフェニルアミン)、並びにMTDATAとして知られるトリス−4−(N−3−メチルフェニル−N−フェニル)フェニルアミンを含む。
また、好ましくは少なくとも1つのLは強力場配位子を含む。

前記Ir及びOs錯体のAl類縁物、特に、

このタイプの置換の例は下記に示される。典型的には、錯体は過剰な新しいイオンの塩によって処理される。同時に製造される単一塩が、この例ではNaClが、平衡を大きな対イオンを有する錯体塩に向かって移動するために反応溶媒中で溶解するように反応条件が調整される。
目標とする錯体は、大容量のイオンの存在下で化学的若しくは電子的酸化、又は前駆体の還元によって合成することができる。

- 前記帯電金属錯体は燐光性である請求項1に記載の発光装置。
- 前記帯電金属錯体及び対イオンが発光層中においてホスト材料と共に混合されている請求項1又は2に記載の発光装置。
- ポリマー又はデンドリマーが前記金属錯体を含む請求項1ないし3のいずれかに記載の発光装置。
- 前記対イオンが正孔及び/又は電子輸送対イオンである請求項1ないし4のいずれかに記載の発光装置。
- 前記帯電金属錯体は+1〜+4の範囲の電荷を有する請求項1ないし5のいずれかに記載の発光装置。
- 前記対イオンはアリール又はヘテロアリール基を含む請求項1ないし6のいずれかに記載の発光装置。
- 前記対イオンは前記金属錯体に結合していない請求項1ないし7のいずれかに記載の発光装置。
- 前記Mがルテニウム、銅、クロム、モリブデン、ロジウム、パラジウム、レニウム、オスミウム、イリジウム、プラチナ、金、アルミニウム、ベリリウム、亜鉛、水銀、カドミウム及びガリウムである請求項8に記載の発光装置。
