Abstract

Description
ダイレクトメタノール型燃料電池の心臓部はプロトン交換膜52であり、両側では薄膜が触媒皮膜54で覆われている。例示的な実施形態において、皮膜54は、2つの電極56、58の間で挟み込まれた、既に説明した多孔質ニッケル皮膜である。負に帯電した電極56にメタノール/水の溶液が導入され、メタノール分子が壊れることにより電極が自然に反応する。いったんばらばらになると、炭素原子は負極56のメタノールおよび水からの酸素原子と結合して二酸化炭素を形成する。
Sulzer Metco社により製造されたSmartArc(R)‐350PP電気アーク溶射システムにより、厚さ約1.6ミリメートルのステンレススチール304シートから切断したMicrocell社のカソード上にNiを主材料とする合金のワイヤアーク皮膜が形成された。NiおよびNiを主材料とする合金と共に亜鉛が、これらの材料製の2つのワイヤを溶射システムに供給することにより同時溶射された。比較のために、ニッケルをアルミニウムと共に同時溶射することにより1組の試料が準備された。皮膜厚さは、3回通した後は約114ミクロン〜約228ミクロンであった。
浸出の最適な条件を決定するために、様々な手法が試験された:高温浸出は80℃での浸出を含み、低温浸出は25℃での浸出を含んだ。セル外浸出は、30%のKOHを入れたビーカーに一晩浸出することを含む一方、低温のセル内浸出は、接合セルを25℃で一晩浸出することを含み、高温のセル内浸出は、接合セル内で80℃で4〜5時間浸出することを含んだ。最初の皮膜からの亜鉛除去を改良するために、試料に電気化学的酸化(陽極酸化)が使用された。亜鉛を主材料とするワイヤアーク皮膜では陽極酸化は電極性能を著しく改良するものであり、最良のカソード準備の手法とは、低温のセル内浸出に約110mA/cm2の電流密度の陽極酸化を継続時間30分で続けることであるとわかった。これらの条件下で全ての陽極酸化が実行された。
バッチ実験において、未分割電気化学セルとして、電極用に2つまたは3つのドリル穴(3電極実験用)を、また、試料採取およびガス放出用に1つまたは2つのドリル穴を有するテフロン(登録商標)(R)キャップを装備した標準4ドラムガラス瓶が使用された。ハイスループット実験において、2つの電極および1つのサンプリングホールを有する同じバッチセルが使用された。基準電極として、6モルのKOH中でHg/HgO電極(CH Instruments社)が使用された。バッチセル用電極として、直径が約6ミリメートルの金属棒および約5ミリメートルのグラファイト棒が使用された。これらの電極の動作表面積は2.1cm2〜2.5cm2の範囲内であった。公正に比較するために、電荷蓄積および電流は6000秒で測定された。

この場合、方程式3はセル電位を記述している。ふつうターフェル勾配は温度と共に増加する。一方で、例外も知られている。水素発生反応(HER)について、I‐V曲線はしばしば、反応機構の変化に起因して2つの異なるターフェル勾配によってより良く記述されるということが観察された。低電流密度では勾配はふつう、高電流密度の勾配よりも小さかった。ターフェル式(2、3)によれば、過電圧は、電流密度に伴って対数的に増加する。一方で、高電流密度(通常0.3〜1A/cm2)については、これらの値は非常に良好に線形化して方程式7を表すことができる。

異なる皮膜についてパラメータa、bが計算された。電流密度270mA/cm2、80℃(9cm2フローセルおよびSS304アノード)の異なる条件下で浸出した試料についてセル電圧が測定され、図5のデータがプロットされた。グラフ60は、セル外の高温KOHで浸出した試料上で測定されたセル電圧を示し、グラフ62は、セル内の高温KOHで浸出した試料上で測定されたセル電圧を示し、グラフ64は、セル外の低温KOHで浸出した試料上で測定されたセル電圧を示し、グラフ66は、セル内の低温KOHで浸出した試料上で測定されたセル電圧を示し、グラフ68は、低温KOHで浸出し、陽極酸化を後に続けた試料上で測定されたセル電圧を示す。カソード性能は、高温・セル外<低温・セル外>低温セル内<高温セル内、の順序で増加するということがわかった。陽極酸化の後に低温浸出を続けると、過電圧が約150〜170mVとなり著しく改良された。最良のカソード準備の手法は、セル外またはセル内のいずれかでのKOH溶液により低温(室温)処理し、これに接合セル内での陽極酸化を続けることであった。
Claims (15)
- 多孔質ニッケル皮膜を形成する方法(10)であって、
ワイヤアーク溶射装置において、選択された成分の2つの消耗電極ワイヤを溶解し噴霧して、溶解され噴霧された材料を形成するとともに前記材料を前記基板に向けて皮膜堆積を形成することによって基板に皮膜を堆積させるステップ(12)を含み、
前記選択された成分がニッケルおよび亜鉛を有し、
更に、アルカリ電解質中に陽電位を加えることにより、前記皮膜堆積から前記亜鉛の少なくとも一部を分解して(14)多孔質ニッケル皮膜を得るステップを含む、方法。 - 前記消耗電極ワイヤの選択された成分全体が、少なくとも50重量パーセントの亜鉛を有する、請求項1記載の方法(10)。
- 第1消耗電極ワイヤが亜鉛を有する、請求項1記載の方法(10)。
- 第2消耗電極ワイヤがニッケルを有する、請求項1記載の方法(10)。
- 前記第2消耗電極ワイヤが、Al、Mo、Co、およびそれらの組み合わせから成る群から選択された少なくとも1つの合金添加剤を有する、請求項4記載の方法(10)。
- 前記亜鉛の少なくとも一部を分解するステップでは、亜鉛の70重量パーセント〜100重量パーセントの範囲内の量の亜鉛を分解する、請求項1記載の方法(10)。
- 前記陽電位が、標準水素電極(SHE)で少なくとも1.2Vである、請求項1記載の方法(10)。
- ワイヤアーク溶射装置において、ニッケルおよび亜鉛を有する選択された成分の2つの消耗電極ワイヤを溶解し噴霧して、溶解され噴霧された材料を形成するとともに前記材料を前記基板に向けて皮膜堆積を形成することによって基板に皮膜を堆積させるステップと、
アルカリ電解質中に陽電位を加えることにより、前記皮膜堆積から前記亜鉛の少なくとも一部を分解して多孔質ニッケル皮膜を得るステップと
からなる工程により形成される、多孔質ニッケル皮膜。 - 少なくとも1つの電極を有する電解セル(40)であって、電極自体が、請求項1記載の方法(10)により得られた多孔質ニッケル皮膜を有する電解セル。
- 少なくとも1つの電極を有するダイレクトメタノール型燃料電池(50)であって、電極自体が、請求項1記載の方法(10)により得られた多孔質ニッケル皮膜を有するダイレクトメタノール型燃料電池。
- 電解セル内で、アノードとカソードとの間に電流を通すことにより前記カソードから水素を発生させる方法であって、
前記カソードが、
ワイヤアーク溶射装置において、ニッケルおよび亜鉛を有する選択された成分の2つの消耗電極ワイヤを溶解し噴霧して、溶解され噴霧された材料を形成するとともに前記材料を前記基板に向けて皮膜堆積を形成することによって基板に皮膜を堆積させるステップと、
アルカリ電解質中に陽電位を加えることにより、前記皮膜堆積から前記亜鉛の少なくとも一部を分解して多孔質ニッケル皮膜を得るステップと
により形成される多孔質ニッケル皮膜を有する、方法。 - 請求項9記載の電解セルを用いた電気化学工程であって、
前記電気化学工程が、クロル‐アルカリ工程、過マンガン酸カリウム製造、過塩素酸カリウム製造、重クロム酸カリウム製造、および有機化合物の酸化から成る群から選択された少なくとも1つを有する、電気化学工程。 - 多孔質ニッケル触媒を作成する方法であって、
ワイヤアーク溶射装置において、選択された成分の2つの消耗電極ワイヤを溶解し噴霧して、溶解され噴霧された材料を形成するとともに前記材料を前記基板に向けて皮膜堆積を形成することによって基板に皮膜を堆積させるステップを含み、
前記選択された成分がニッケルおよび亜鉛を有し、
更に、アルカリ電解質中に陽電位を加えることにより、前記皮膜堆積から前記亜鉛の少なくとも一部を分解して多孔質ニッケル皮膜を得るステップを含む、方法。 - 不飽和化学結合を水素化する化学工程であって、請求項13において形成された多孔質ニッケル触媒が使用されて、前記工程の少なくとも1つのステップが触媒される化学工程。
- 前記多孔質ニッケル触媒が炭素‐炭素二重結合を還元する、請求項14記載の化学工程。
