Abstract
Description
The present invention relates to a method for manufacturing an optical module in which a laser diode and an optical fiber are coupled. In particular, the present invention relates to a method of manufacturing an optical module that is highly reliable with respect to a change with time in order to maintain accuracy after coupling a laser diode and an optical fiber, and that improves the yield of products.
As a device for transmitting data, an optical module in which a laser diode and an optical fiber are coupled and packaged is widely used.
Laser diodes, optical fibers, thermistors, TECs, etc. exist as packaging component elements, but the components that couple laser diodes and optical fibers are responsible for converting electrical signal data into light and transmitting the data. It is an exaggerated part to say that it is the most important element of the optical module. The coupling accuracy is in sub-micron units. For example, if the coupling accuracy deviates by about 3 μm, the optical power output may be about half.
In addition, since the optical module product may cause a shift in coupling efficiency, it is subjected to a temperature cycle test at the final stage of production. This is a final test for determining whether the optical power output to be secured is within the allowable range. If an optical module product that had sufficient optical power output before the final test is subjected to a temperature cycle, the optical power output may fall below an allowable range. In some cases, the optical power output may be reduced during a separate part bonding process performed after the optical fiber and laser diode are coupled or during the reflow process. This is because the optical fiber is coupled at an optimum position with respect to the laser diode, but the optical fiber is displaced in a subsequent process or a temperature cycle test.
However, the cause of the misalignment between the optical fiber and the laser diode is that a large amount (high temperature) of the solder, the substrate, and the metallized optical fiber when the solder is welded to the optical fiber. Since heat is supplied and cooled to room temperature, thermal stress (thermal stress) is generated and remains on the solder, the substrate, and the metalized optical fiber. Therefore, the location where the alignment shift occurs is mainly near the solder where the optical fiber is welded and fixed.
The conventional method of slitting a substrate is effective for the substrate, but it cannot be applied to solder or optical fiber, and there remains concern about misalignment.
In addition, since the method of performing the heat treatment on the optical fiber in advance does not cope with the thermal stress when the solder is melted, there still remains anxiety about misalignment.
In other words, it is difficult to say that this is a fundamental solution for misalignment. In addition, both of them are provided with slits in the substrate and the number of preliminary heating steps is increased, so it cannot be denied that the cost is increased and the work efficiency is lowered.
In view of the above-described points, the present invention provides a method of manufacturing an optical module that is highly reliable over time, does not lead to an increase in cost, and is capable of producing a stable optical module product with high work efficiency. It is intended.
In order to solve the conventional problems, an optical module manufacturing method according to the present invention includes a laser diode fixed on a substrate, the laser diode and the optical fiber coupled by an alignment device, and the optical fiber fixed on the substrate. In the manufacturing method of the optical module
(1) The position is adjusted by the alignment device so that the coupling between the optical fiber and the laser diode is a predetermined optimum position,
(2) Covering the optical fiber on the substrate with a solder material, irradiating the solder with a laser beam from a power laser, and fixing the solder on the substrate by melting the solder;
In order to release the residual thermal stress generated in the fixed optical fiber and solder, the power laser is irradiated again under irradiation conditions with reduced integrated power.
The method of manufacturing an optical module according to the present invention is a method of manufacturing an optical module in which a laser diode fixed on a substrate, the laser diode and the optical fiber are coupled by an alignment device, and the optical fiber is fixed on the substrate. ,
(1) The position is adjusted by the alignment device so that the coupling between the optical fiber and the laser diode is a predetermined optimum position,
(2) Covering the optical fiber with solder on the substrate, irradiating the solder with a laser beam from a power laser under a first irradiation condition, and fixing the solder on the substrate by melting the solder;
(3) When the optical output from the fixed optical fiber after melting the solder is monitored and a decrease in the predetermined optical output due to the deviation from the predetermined optimal position is detected, the laser beam from the power laser The solder is irradiated and melted under the second irradiation condition, and the optical fiber is shifted to the optimum position by the alignment device and fixed again,
(4) If the monitored light output is within a predetermined light output range, the laser beam from the power laser is irradiated to the solder under the third irradiation condition, and the residue is generated in the optical fiber and the solder. The optical fiber is fixed by releasing the heat stress.
According to the method for manufacturing an optical module of the present invention, in the production of an optical module product, it is possible to cope with a deviation from the optimum position due to a change with time after the alignment process of the laser diode and the optical fiber without increasing the number of parts and processing of the parts. The product itself can have a simple structure. Furthermore, it is possible to cope without increasing the number of processes, the yield is improved, and the working efficiency is improved. As a result, there is no increase in cost.
In addition, since the heat stress can be processed in an assembly state in which the optical fiber, the melted and fixed solder, and the substrate are integrated, work efficiency is high.
Since the heat stress release treatment can be expected to have the same effects as the tempering effect made of steel and the annealing effect made of resin, the reliability of the product is also improved.

FIG. 5 is a flowchart showing an example of a method for manufacturing an optical module of the present invention. FIG. 6 is an example of another embodiment of the present invention. 7 and 8 are schematic views of the alignment apparatus. The position of the
As shown in FIG. 1A, the
In order to melt the
Further,
This is because applying uniform heat to the
For this reason, the
The power of the power laser of the
However, the
Then, the irradiation of the laser beam under the second irradiation condition when the optimum position is shifted due to the irradiation of the laser beam under the first irradiation condition is about 30% as the integrated laser power. Readjust the optimum position with the
However, the fixing by the first laser light irradiation under the first irradiation condition is very quickly cooled to the temperature at which the
Furthermore, in order to efficiently apply heat applied to the
Next, laser irradiation will be described in detail. As shown in the flowchart of FIG. 5, the first condition is that the
Irradiation under the second irradiation condition is performed until the
Further, as shown in FIG. 2 (a), after the
For example, a heat is supplied to the
Whether or not the
FIG. 4 is a diagram showing the relationship between the deviation of the optical axis and the optical power output. When the Y direction shown in FIG. 2 (c) is shifted, the optical power output is significantly reduced up to 10 μm. However, in the Z direction, the optical power output is greatly reduced even when it is shifted in submicron units. For this reason, removal of the thermal stress 9 generated and remaining in the

Here, an outline of alignment for adjusting the
In the conventional method, the above process is completed in step S5. In other words, the
However, as in the present invention, the fundamental factor that the optimum positions of the
In addition, since the assembled product is in the state shown in Fig. 2 (c) with the heat stress released, the
The method for manufacturing an optical module according to the present invention is highly reliable with respect to changes over time, does not lead to an increase in cost, and is suitable for production of a stable optical module product with high work efficiency.
