CNTには、1層のグラフェンシートで構成された単層CNT(Single−Walled Carbon Nano Tube:SWCNT)と、複数層のグラフェンシートが同心筒状に配列している多層CNT(Multi−Walled Carbon Nano Tube:MWCNT)の2種類がある。

なお、CNTの生成の有無及び大きさ等は、TEM(Transmission Electron Microscope:透過型電子顕微鏡)観察により確認することができる。
【0014】
表1に示す値は、FE−SEM(Field Emission − Scanning Electron Microscope:電界放射型走査電子顕微鏡)により、Ni基板1の組織及びCNT生成の分布状態を観察し、その結果から求めている。

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a method for producing carbon nanotubes, and more particularly to a method for producing carbon nanotubes using chemical vapor deposition.
[0002]
[Prior art]
The carbon nanotube (Carbon Nano Tube: hereinafter referred to as CNT) has a very small diameter of a graphene sheet (one in which carbon atoms form a regular six-membered ring network in a honeycomb shape in a planar shape) on the order of nanometers. Cylindrical material. The CNT includes single-walled CNT (Single-Walled Carbon Nano Tube: SWCNT) composed of a single-layer graphene sheet and multi-walled CNT (Multi-Walled Carbon Nano) in which a plurality of layers of graphene sheets are arranged concentrically. There are two types: Tube: MWCNT). Since this CNT has geometric and physical characteristics not found in conventional substances, it is a new material that represents the nanotechnology field, and its application in the fields of composite materials, electronic materials, medicine, and energy. Is being considered.
[0003]
As its manufacturing method, an arc discharge method and a chemical vapor deposition (hereinafter referred to as CVD) method are known (for example, refer to Patent Documents 1 and 2). In the CVD method, a thin film of catalytic metal such as Ni, Fe and Co is formed on a substrate such as Si, or fine particles of catalytic metal are supported, and a hydrocarbon gas is brought into contact with the catalytic metal. CNT can be synthesized on the substrate.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the conventional CVD method for producing CNTs has the following problems. When CNTs are synthesized on the substrate by the method described above, CNTs are generated on the entire surface of the substrate. For this reason, for example, when it is desired to form a region where CNT is generated and a region where it is not generated on the same substrate, such as a circuit, a non-catalytic metal or the like must be patterned on the substrate, There is a problem that a non-catalytic metal thin film forming step is required. Further, even when it is desired to adjust the ratio of the CNT generation region in the total area of the substrate, the non-catalytic metal or the like must be patterned on the substrate, which requires a non-catalytic metal thin film forming step.
[0006]
The present invention has been made in view of such problems, and can form a carbon nanotube generation region and a non-generation region on the same substrate without patterning a non-catalytic metal or the like on the substrate, and the total area of the substrate An object of the present invention is to provide a method for producing carbon nanotubes, which can adjust the proportion of the carbon nanotube production region.
[0007]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The method for producing carbon nanotubes according to the present invention is the method for producing carbon nanotubes by chemical vapor deposition, wherein an Ni substrate is disposed in a reaction tube and a hydrocarbon gas is brought into contact with the Ni substrate under heating conditions. A step of decomposing hydrogen gas to generate carbon nanotubes on the Ni substrate, and adjusting a region in which the carbon nanotubes are generated on the Ni substrate by changing an average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate; It is characterized by.
[0008]
As a result of intensive experimental research to solve the above-mentioned problems, the present inventors have found that when CNT is synthesized on pure Ni bulk, CNT is generated along the crystal grain boundary of Ni. . Therefore, in the present invention, in the synthesis of CNTs by the thermal CVD method, Ni, which is a catalytic metal for synthesizing CNTs, is used as a substrate, and the crystal grain size of this Ni substrate is changed to occupy the Ni substrate. The ratio of the region where CNT is generated is adjusted. This eliminates the need for patterning the non-catalytic metal on the substrate.
[0009]
The average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate after the step of generating the carbon nanotubes is preferably 60 μm or less, and more preferably 10 μm or less. Thereby, carbon nanotubes can be efficiently generated on the Ni substrate, and the CNT generation region and the non-generation region are formed on the same substrate without performing the step of patterning the non-catalytic metal or the like on the substrate. be able to.
[0010]
Moreover, acetylene can be used for the said hydrocarbon gas, for example.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, a method for producing a carbon nanotube according to an embodiment of the present invention will be specifically described with reference to the accompanying drawings. In the carbon nanotube production method of the present embodiment, CNTs are synthesized by a thermal CVD method in which a source gas is brought into contact with a catalyst metal under heating conditions. FIG. 1 is a schematic view showing an apparatus for producing carbon nanotubes in the present embodiment. As shown in FIG. 1, in the thermal CVD apparatus used in the carbon nanotube production method of the present embodiment, both ends of a reaction tube 2 installed horizontally are closed by plugs 6. A pipe 7a for supplying a reaction gas and a pipe 7b for supplying a carrier gas are inserted. The other plug 6 is inserted with a pipe 7b for exhausting exhaust gas. Further, an infrared image furnace 4 is provided so as to surround the reaction tube 2, and the synthesis unit 8 in the reaction tube 2 is heated by the infrared image furnace 4.
[0012]
Next, a method for manufacturing carbon nanotubes using the manufacturing apparatus configured as described above will be described. First, as shown in FIG. 1, a Ni substrate 1 made of pure Ni bulk, which is a catalyst metal for generating CNTs, is installed in the synthesis unit 8 in the reaction tube 2. The size of the Ni substrate 1 is, for example, 10 mm long, 20 mm wide, and 1 mm thick. By using Ni, which is a catalyst metal for CNT synthesis, as a substrate, the step of providing the catalyst metal on the substrate is not necessary. The Ni substrate 1 may be subjected to a pretreatment such as polishing with diamond or the like so that the surface roughness is 1 μm or less and then ultrasonic cleaning in acetone.
[0013]
Next, the reaction gas is supplied from the pipe 7a, the carrier gas is supplied from the pipe 7b, and the synthesis unit 8 is heated to the decomposition temperature of the reaction gas, for example, about 700 ° C. by the infrared image furnace 4. At that time, the exhaust gas is exhausted from the pipe 7c. As the reactive gas in the present embodiment, for example, a hydrocarbon gas such as acetylene is used, and the flow rate thereof is, for example, 100 cm 3 / min. Moreover, as carrier gas, inert gas, such as argon, can be used, for example, The flow rate is 20 cm < 3 > / min. As a result, the reaction gas comes into contact with Ni as the catalyst metal and decomposes, and CNTs are generated on the Ni substrate 1. For example, when the synthesis time is 10 minutes, CNTs having a diameter of about 50 nm are generated in a range of about 1 μm in width along the Ni crystal grain boundary. Thus, when a pure Ni bulk is used for the substrate, carbon nanotubes are not generated on the entire surface of the substrate, but are generated along the crystal grain boundaries of Ni. Therefore, a region where carbon nanotubes are generated on the Ni substrate, A region where no carbon nanotube is generated is formed. In addition, the presence or absence, the size, and the like of CNT can be confirmed by observation with a TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope).
[0014]
In the carbon nanotube manufacturing method of the present embodiment, the Ni average crystal grain size in the Ni substrate 1 is set to 60 μm or less after CNT synthesis. Table 1 shows the relationship between the average crystal grain size before and after CNT synthesis in the Ni substrate 1 and the ratio of the CNT generation region in the substrate. The values shown in Table 1 are obtained from the results of observing the structure of the Ni substrate 1 and the distribution state of the CNT formation by FE-SEM (Field Emission-Scanning Electron Microscope). The cutting method described in JIS H 0501 copper grain size test method is applied to the measurement of the average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate. In addition, it is calculated that the CNT generation region grows in a region having a width of 1 μm along the grain boundary of the Ni substrate 1.
[0015]
[Table 1]
[0016]
As shown in Table 1, the ratio of the CNT generation region to the substrate area decreases as the average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate 1 increases. Therefore, by changing the average particle diameter of the Ni substrate 1, the ratio of the CNT generation region in the substrate area can be adjusted. For example, when the synthesized average crystal is 60 μm or less, the CTN generation ratio is 0.5% or more, but when the CNT synthesis is performed using the Ni substrate 1 having the synthesized average crystal grain size of 75 μm. CNT is hardly generated, and the CNT generation region occupying the substrate area is reduced to about 0.1%. Therefore, in the carbon nanotube manufacturing method of the present embodiment, the average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate 1 is set to 60 μm or less after CNT synthesis. Further, when the average crystal grain size of the substrate 1 after synthesis is set to 10 μm or less, the ratio of the CNT generation region exceeds 25%, so that the productivity can be further improved.
[0017]
The average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate in the present embodiment can be adjusted by various heat treatments. For example, when heat treatment is performed at 700 ° C. or higher, which is the recrystallization temperature of Ni, the average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate increases as the treatment time increases. In addition, the average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate 1 after the CNT synthesis is slightly coarser than that before the synthesis. FIG. 2 is a graph showing the temperature change of the Ni substrate 1 when synthesis is performed at 700 ° C. for 10 minutes, with time on the horizontal axis and substrate temperature on the vertical axis. The substrate temperature shown in FIG. 2 is a value measured by the thermocouple 3 attached to the Ni substrate 1. In the CNT synthesizing process, the Ni substrate 1 receives a thermal history as shown in FIG. 2, and thereby the average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate 1 becomes coarse. For this reason, in this embodiment, the average crystal grain size of the Ni substrate 1 is defined by the value after synthesis, and the Ni substrate used for synthesis takes into account that the average crystal grain size changes depending on the synthesis process. Are preferably selected.
[0018]
In addition, when Cu which is not a catalytic metal for generating CNT is used for the substrate and CNT is synthesized by the same method and conditions as in the present embodiment, CNT is not generated regardless of the size of crystal grains of the Cu substrate. In addition, when CNT is synthesized by using Fe, which is a catalyst metal for CNT generation, using the same method and conditions as in the previous embodiment, CNT is formed on the entire surface of the substrate regardless of the size of the crystal grains of the Fe substrate. Generate. Therefore, in the Fe substrate, the CNT generation region cannot be controlled by the crystal grains.
[0019]
【The invention's effect】
As described above in detail, according to the present invention, carbon nanotubes are produced on the Ni substrate by using Ni, which is a catalyst metal for producing carbon nanotubes, as a substrate and changing the crystal grain size of the Ni substrate. Therefore, it is possible to form the carbon nanotube generation region and the non-generation region on the same substrate without patterning non-catalytic metal on the substrate, and occupy the total area of the substrate. The ratio of the carbon nanotube generation region can be adjusted.
