TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a semiconductor laser device, and more particularly, to a semiconductor laser device that reduces fluctuations in optical coupling efficiency when light emitted from a semiconductor laser enters an optical fiber.
[0002]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, when light emitted from a semiconductor laser is input to an optical fiber via a lens, the end of the optical fiber is generally held by a ferrule, and the ferrule is generally held on a substrate on which the semiconductor laser is mounted. (See, for example, Patent Document 1).
[0003]
Incidentally, ferrules are generally made of zirconia or the like, and are often not optically transparent. In such a case, the light emitted from the semiconductor laser is coupled to the optical fiber via the lens and becomes propagation light, but a part of the light cannot be coupled to the optical fiber and leaks. Part of this leaked light passes through the optical fiber and is absorbed by the ferrule, and the absorbed light is converted to heat. Here, when the semiconductor laser has a low output, the above heat generation is small and does not cause any problem. However, when the output of the semiconductor laser is a high output such as a W class, the heat generation becomes large, and parts such as a ferrule are deformed and the semiconductor laser is deformed. There is a possibility that a positional shift between the optical fiber and the optical fiber may occur, and the optical coupling efficiency may be reduced.
[0004]
Note that there is a package in which an optical fiber, a semiconductor laser, or the like is disposed with a transparent silicone gel for the purpose of improving moisture resistance (for example, see Patent Document 2). The reason for this is that the silicone gel penetrates between the semiconductor laser and the optical fiber so that light from the semiconductor laser does not impede the optical fiber. Since this device is intended for applications such as communication, the above-mentioned problems are not considered. As a matter of fact, an opaque support substrate is arranged outside the silicone gel.

[0013]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Hereinafter, embodiments of a semiconductor laser device according to the present invention will be described with reference to the drawings.
[0014]
FIG. 1 is a configuration diagram showing one embodiment of a semiconductor laser device according to the present invention. In FIG. 1, 1 is a base on which a semiconductor laser 2 is mounted, 3 is a lens, 4 is a package covering the base 1, the semiconductor laser 2, and the lens 3, 5 is an optical fiber, and 6 is one end of an optical fiber 5. A tubular optical fiber holding member for holding, 7 is a Peltier element for controlling the temperature of the package 4, and 8 is a substrate (heat sink).
[0015]
The laser light 9 output from the light emitting surface 2 a of the semiconductor laser 2 is incident on (one core of) one end of the optical fiber 5 via the lens 3.
[0016]
FIG. 2 is a sectional view of a main part of the apparatus of FIG. 1 are given the same reference numerals. Reference numeral 11 denotes a transparent adhesive for fixing the package 1 and the optical fiber holding member 6. The adhesive 11 may be opaque in portions other than the optical path. Reference numeral 12 denotes an adhesive for fixing the optical fiber 5 and the holding member 6. 5a indicates a cladding of the optical fiber 5, and 5b indicates a core of the optical fiber 5.
[0017]
The optical fiber holding member 6 and the adhesive 12 are formed of a material that is transparent to the outgoing light 9 of the semiconductor laser 2. The material of the optical fiber holding member 6 includes acrylic resin, glass, and the like. On the other hand, the adhesive 12 includes an optical adhesive, and both are preferably materials having high transmittance. In addition, it is preferable that the material has a small coefficient of thermal expansion in order to suppress deformation in consideration of partial absorption of heat and heat generation.
[0018]
The shape of the holding member 6 for holding the optical fiber 5 does not need to be particularly limited, and may be a ferrule shape having a hole corresponding to the shape of the optical fiber 5, or a shape sandwiching the optical fiber 5 between two plates, Alternatively, a configuration that transmits light, such as a shape having a V groove into which the optical fiber 5 is fitted, may be used.
[0019]
According to the above-described embodiment, by making the optical fiber holding member 6 and the adhesive 12 transparent, the leaked light passes through the optical fiber holding member 6 and escapes to the outside as shown by arrows Y1 and Y2. Become. Thus, even when the light 9 from the semiconductor laser 2 has a high output, heat generation of components such as the package 4 and the optical fiber holding member 6 can be suppressed, and the components are not deformed and the optical coupling efficiency is high. It is possible to maintain the state.
[0020]
In the above embodiment, the attachment of the optical fiber holding member 6 to the package 4 is performed by the adhesive 11, but it is a matter of course that other attachment structures may be used. The point is that the holding member 6 supports the semiconductor laser 2 so that the light emitted from the semiconductor laser 2 is incident on the end of the optical fiber 5 (the base 1 and the package 4 correspond to this embodiment). What is necessary is to be fixed with respect to.
[0021]
Further, the optical fiber 5 and the entire holding member 6 may be covered with a cover in order to prevent the leakage light from leaking out of the apparatus. In this way, there is no fear that the leakage light of the laser light is directly viewed, and the safety is very high.
[0022]
FIG. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a principal part showing another embodiment of the semiconductor laser device according to the present invention. The optical fiber holding member 21 and the adhesive 22 are different from the holding member 6 and the adhesive 12 of FIG. I have. That is, in the apparatus shown in FIG. 3, the adhesive 22 for bonding the holding member 21 to the optical fiber 5 is made transparent and its refractive index is set lower than the refractive index of the clad 5a of the optical fiber 5. . As a result, as shown by arrows Y3 and Y4, the leaked light propagates in the clad 5a of the optical fiber 5 and escapes outside the device.
[0023]
In the case of the above embodiment, the laser light 9 from the semiconductor laser 2 does not reach the optical fiber holding member 21, so that the optical fiber holding member 21 does not need to be transparent. Further, all the light emitted from the semiconductor laser 2 is incident on the end face of the optical fiber 5, and the incident angle is equal to or less than the numerical aperture (NA) determined by the refractive index between the cladding 5a of the optical fiber 5 and the adhesive 22. The structure shown in FIG. 3 can be adopted on the premise that scattering between the clad 5a of the optical fiber 5 and the adhesive 22 is small.
[0024]
According to the above-described embodiment, as in the previous embodiment, it is possible to obtain a semiconductor laser device capable of suppressing heat generation of components and preventing deformation of components, thereby maintaining high optical coupling efficiency. .
[0025]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, of the light emitted from the semiconductor laser, the light that cannot be coupled to the optical fiber is made to escape to the outside, thereby suppressing the heat generation of the component, preventing the component from being deformed, and improving the optical coupling efficiency. A semiconductor laser device capable of maintaining a high state can be provided.
