この場合には、エアクリーナ外筒の側表面にインレットパイプが連接され、インレットパイプの下流部に膨張部分が形成されて、インレットパイプからエアクリーナ外筒内の旋回流路へ空気が低い通気抵抗のもとで流入し、旋回流路に沿って高速旋回する空気流から遠心力により水分、ダストを分離するようにしているが、この遠心分離性能はエアクリーナ外筒内で旋回する空気の流速、すなわち、空気流量により決められるので、エンジンの回転速度等に影響を受けやすいという問題があり、また、気水分離がフイルタエレメントに隣接した位置で行われるため、比較的多量の水分がエアクリーナ外筒内の旋回流路へ流入したときには、その水分が十分に分離されないまま空気流と共にフイルタエレメントを通過して、エンジン側へ送給されるおそれがあった。

図1及び図2において、車両に搭載されたエンジンに付設のエアクリーナ1は、円筒状フイルタケース2の内部にエアフイルタ3が収納され、フイルタケース2の外周壁に空気取入れ口4が形成されている一方、フイルタケース2の外周壁にほぼ接する状態で断面略四角形の空気導入筒5が略水平に配置されていて、車両前面から取り込まれた空気が矢印Aのように空気導入筒5の一端に取り入れられ、空気導入筒5の他端が壁面6により閉塞されて、その近辺下部にドレン7が設けられていると共に、空気導入筒5の中間部が空気取入れ口4に連通している。

従って、空気導入筒5の一端に取り入れられた空気は空気導入筒5の中間部から空気取入れ口4を通ってフイルタケース2内へ導かれ、矢印Bのように旋回しながら逐次エアフイルタ3を通過して清浄化された後、矢印Cのようにフイルタケース2の上方へ抜き出されて、エンジンへ吸気として送給される。

本発明にかかるエアクリーナにあっては、空気導入筒の一端から空気と共に流入した比較的多量の水分は、自身の慣性によって空気導入筒他端の閉塞部分にまで到達し、その閉塞部分に付着することにより空気から効果的に分離されるので、エンジン側へ水分が送給されることを容易に抑制できることとなる。
