TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a laser power control device and a laser power control applied to an optical recording / reproducing device for recording and / or reproducing information on an optical disc such as a DVD as a recording medium by using a laser beam from a semiconductor laser (LD). The present invention relates to a power control method and an optical disk device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
With the spread of multimedia, read-only media (recording media) such as music CDs and CD-ROMs, recently DVD-ROMs, and information reproducing apparatuses have been put to practical use. Recently, in addition to write-once optical disks using dye-type media or rewritable MO disks using magneto-optical (MO) media, phase-change type media have also attracted attention. Information recording / reproducing devices have been put to practical use. In addition, rewritable DVD media are attracting much attention as next-generation multimedia recording media and large-capacity storage media.
[0003]
The phase-change media is for recording information by reversibly changing a recording material into a crystalline phase and an amorphous phase, and unlike an MO media, does not require an external magnetic field and is emitted from an LD. Information recording / reproduction can be performed only by laser light, and overwrite recording in which information recording and erasure are performed at once by laser light is possible.
[0004]
A typical recording waveform for recording information on a dye-type medium is, for example, a single-pulse LD emission waveform generated based on an 8-16 modulation code. In recording, there is a problem that the recording mark is distorted in a tear shape due to heat storage. For this reason, as shown in FIG. 11C, a laser light having a multi-pulse waveform based on recording data such as an EFM modulation code is used as an LD emission waveform rule (strategy) for recording information on a dye-type medium. A method of forming a mark on a dye-type medium has been proposed.
[0005]
A method has been proposed in which the mark portion of the multi-pulse waveform is configured by a head heating pulse and a plurality of subsequent continuous heating pulses.
[0006]
Further, in order to record information on a phase change type medium, it is general to form a mark with a laser beam having a multi-pulse waveform using multiple recording powers as shown in FIG.
[0007]
When recording on a dye type medium or a phase change type medium, it is necessary to properly control the recording light emission power, but the drive current-light emission power characteristics of the LD fluctuate easily due to self-heating and the like. Therefore, APC (Automatic Power Control) control is generally performed as a means for stabilizing the emission power. In the APC control, a part of a laser beam from an LD is made incident on a photodetector (PD), and a laser drive current is controlled using a monitor current generated in proportion to the light emission power of the LD.
[0008]
When only information reproduction is considered, the laser driving current is generally superimposed with a high-frequency current to suppress noise, but is a constant current in terms of DC. Therefore, by forming a feedback loop of a relatively low band, APC control can be easily realized.
[0009]
On the other hand, when the APC control is performed during recording, the laser recording power changes at a high speed to form a mark / space in a recording state on the recording medium, and therefore, it is necessary to devise control. For example, in a CD system or a DVD system, if a feedback loop of a low band is configured by utilizing the fact that the DSV (digital sum value) of recording data becomes zero, the recording power can be controlled with a simple configuration as in the case of reproduction. However, the recording power cannot be accurately controlled.
[0010]
Therefore, for example, when recording is performed on a CD-R (dye-based) medium using the strategy shown in FIG. 13C, for example, data of a mark or space having a length of 11T, which is the longest data length, is recorded. If the emission power is sampled / held at each mark / space when recording, the recording power can be accurately controlled with a relatively inexpensive configuration.
[0011]
However, in the case of a DVD system, it is desirable to perform the above-described multi-pulse emission for both the dye system and the phase change system. In a simple sample / hold circuit, a light receiving system or a very high-speed control band in a subsequent circuit is required. It is not practical to need.
[0012]
As a method for solving the above-mentioned problem, in the technology described in Patent Document 1, by appropriately providing a period in which the LD emission waveform is driven in a non-pulse state, the amorphization level (peak power) at the time of recording on the phase-change medium is determined. And the read level (bottom power).
[0013]
When the technique described in Patent Document 1 is applied to mark recording power control of a recording strategy of a dye-type medium as shown in FIG. 11C, a portion recorded in a non-pulse state is continuously heated. Although the recording mark is not formed well and becomes a defective portion, the APC operation is performed at relatively long intervals, and the error correction function hardly affects the reproduction.
[0014]
In addition, since the space recording power is generally a constant power, it is possible to control the space recording power without giving any loss to the recording data by sampling / holding when recording relatively long space data. Therefore, the space recording power control interval can be controlled at a shorter interval than the mark recording power control interval.
[0015]
Further, since the optimum value of the recording power changes depending on the ambient temperature, the type of the recording medium, the linear velocity, and the like, the dye-type medium or the phase-change type medium is generally called an OPC (Optimum Power Control) before recording information. The recording power is optimized by trial writing. This OPC is performed by recording / reproducing predetermined information in a predetermined area called PCA (Power Calibration Area) of the recording medium.
[0016]
Specifically, test data of a predetermined pattern consisting of a mark and a space of three times (3T) to fourteen times (14T) of the channel clock cycle T is recorded by changing the light emission power by several types, and this test data is reproduced. The DC modulation of the RF signal at each power or the asymmetry of the RF signal after AC coupling is calculated as an evaluation criterion.
[0017]
The modulation M is, for example, the maximum amplitude of the RF signal as Ipp, The maximum value of the RF signal is ImaxThen, it is calculated by the equation (Equation 1).
[0018]
(Equation 1)
[0019]
The asymmetry β after AC coupling is the positive peak level X of the RF signal after AC coupling.1, Negative peak level X2Is used to represent the equation (Equation 2).
[0020]
(Equation 2)
[0021]
Where (X1+ X2) Is the difference between the positive and negative peak levels of the RF signal after AC coupling, and (X1-X2) Is the peak-to-peak value of the RF signal after AC coupling.
[0022]
An optimum recording power is determined based on the modulation M or the asymmetry β after AC coupling.

[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In order to perform the recording operation, it is necessary to calculate the differential efficiency of the LD in advance and determine the drive current at each power level. Generally, a recording operation is performed in a focus-off state prior to the recording operation, and the differential efficiency is calculated by using the recording level power as a sample.
[0025]
Generally, the drive current-emission power characteristic (IL characteristic) of a laser is considered to be substantially linear, but has some non-linearity to be precise as shown in FIG. Further, in the case of performing pulse light emission, when the light emission power rapidly changes from low power to high power, the IL characteristic changes in a very short time, and the peak level of the pulse may decrease ( See FIG. 14). The amount by which the peak level decreases becomes more pronounced as the emission power increases. This is probably because the higher the light emission power, the more rapidly the laser heats up from low power.
[0026]
Further, in general, the time width of the recording pulse becomes shorter as the recording speed becomes faster, so that the lower the recording speed is, the larger the amount of decrease of the peak level becomes. For example, in FIG. 15, when the recording speed is slower in the waveform (b), the relationship between the peak level lowering amounts A and B is A <B.
[0027]
In the case where the LD has such characteristics, setting the laser drive current while considering the IL characteristics as linear results in an error in the light emission power, leading to a reduction in recording quality.
[0028]

Therefore, as shown in the enlarged view of FIG. 5A, during emission for calculating the differential efficiency, emission is performed in a non-pulse state for a certain period to sample the peak level. The non-pulse state is set when long mark data is generated (for example, 10T mark or more). The power
[0075]
Next, a procedure for calculating the differential efficiency and the peak level driving current according to the magnitude of the peak level in the first embodiment will be described with reference to the flowchart of FIG.
[0076]
First, in the first embodiment, as shown in FIG. 8, the emission power at the peak level is changed by a predetermined step (Pw1, Pw2, Pw3 three times, S1-1, S1-3, S1-5), and each peak level is changed. Then, the dummy writing is performed to calculate the differential efficiency (S1-2, S1-4, S1-6).
[0077]
The differential efficiency η (Pw) at each emission power is calculated by the following equation (Equation 3).
[0078]
(Equation 3)
[0079]
here,
Ib: bias level drive current
Pw: bias level emission power
Iw: peak level drive current
Pw: peak level emission power
ΔIw: peak level superimposed current (= Iw−Ib).
[0080]
Then, an approximate expression of the emission power Pw and the differential efficiency η is calculated based on the relationship between each peak power setting and the corresponding differential efficiency (S1-7).
[0081]
The relational expression may be a first-order approximation expression, but in order to obtain a more accurate relation, a second-order approximation expression as shown in Expression (4) is used.
[0082]
(Equation 4)
η (Pw) = (a × Pw2) + (B × Pw) + c
Here, when the test writing described below is not performed, the differential efficiency η (Pw) at the peak power Pw when the information is actually recorded is calculated from the equation (Equation 4). The peak level superimposed current ΔIw is obtained by the equation (5) (S1-8), and is set as the peak level superimposed
[0083]
(Equation 5)
[0084]
Here, when performing the test writing, the host controller 35 operates during the writing operation (write

At this time, at each peak level, the differential efficiency η and the peak level current
[0086]
After the recording in which the light emission power is changed step by step is completed, the recorded area is reproduced, the RF signal 105 is sampled for each sector, and the asymmetry ( β) is calculated, and the light emission power of the LD
[0087]
Next, the calculation of the differential efficiency of the emission power according to the second embodiment of the present invention will be described with reference to the flowchart shown in FIG. The basic configuration of the second embodiment is the same as that of the first embodiment, but differs from the first embodiment in that the differential efficiency η is corrected according to the recording speed.
[0088]
As shown in the timing chart of FIG. 10, in the differential efficiency calculation operation performed prior to the information recording operation (may be immediately before the information recording operation), the recording speed is changed by a predetermined step (in the second embodiment, (1) ) To (3)), dummy writing is performed at each recording speed (the recording speed is sequentially increased in the order of recording speed (1) → recording speed (2) → recording speed (3)). -1, S2-3, S2-5), and the differential efficiency is calculated by the equation (Equation 3) (S2-2, S2-4, S2-6). Then, from the relationship between each recording speed and the differential efficiency corresponding thereto, the recording speed VlAnd an approximate expression of differential efficiency η is calculated (S2-7). This relational expression is a quadratic approximation as shown in Expression (6) as in the first embodiment.
[0089]
(Equation 6)
η (Vl) = (A × V)l 2) + (B × Vl) + C
Here, in the second embodiment, when test writing is not performed, the recording speed V at which information is actually recorded is obtained from the equation (
[0090]
(Equation 7)
[0091]
To perform the trial writing, the host controller 35 performs the same sequence as in the first embodiment. At this time, at each peak level, the differential efficiency η and the peak level are calculated by the equations (6) and (7). Each of the current superimposition signals 102 is calculated.
[0092]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the laser power control apparatus and the laser power control method according to the present invention, when calculating the differential efficiency of the semiconductor laser prior to the information recording operation, the peak level is changed to a plurality of levels of power. By calculating the differential efficiency when the light is emitted at each peak level, or by emitting the light at waveforms corresponding to a plurality of recording speeds, and calculating the differential efficiency at each light emission waveform, the laser is accurately calculated. Since the drive current is determined, the light emission power at the time of recording can be accurately controlled.
[0093]
Further, according to the optical disk device of the present invention, the laser drive current is determined by employing the laser power control device and the laser power control method, so that the light emission power during recording can be accurately controlled. Therefore, a recording operation by accurate writing is performed.
