従来、和菓子やパン、ご飯物等の塊状の製品を包装フィルム等の包装材によって包装する包装機については、横方向に供給される製品を同じ横方向に紙送りされるウェブ状の包装材で筒状に取り囲み、筒状包装材の合わされた縁部同士をヒートシールすることでセンターシールを施し、更に、製品に対して包装材の送り方向の前後で包装材をエンドシールすることで、製品をいわゆる三方シールで包装する横型の袋包装機が用いられている。塊状の製品については、縦型の包装機よりも横型の包装機のほうが、製品を損傷させることなく且つ容易に筒状の包装材の中に供給することができる。
