u=λΣV/2ηL
ζ=λΣ/ε
Γ=∫0 a2πvrdr=πa2{u−pa2/[8Lη]}
a2=2λΣV/p
Γ=πa2u/2
となる。
【0010】
N=b2/[2a2]
Γ=[πb2/2]{u−pa2/[8Lη]}
y=y0{1−exp[−t/τ]}
y0=4λΣV/[a2ρg]
τ−1=b2a2ρg/[16R2ηL]
ζ=λΣ/ε=155mV
a=7.5×10−6m
【0030】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates generally to fluid pumps. In particular, the present invention relates to electro-osmotic pumps useful for transporting aqueous solutions in micro-fluidics. The present invention is particularly, but not exclusively, useful as an apparatus and method for enhancing the pumping capacity of an electro-osmotic pump.
[0002]
[Prior art]
It is known that liquids can move through small diameter tubes under the influence of an applied electric field by a phenomenon commonly known as electroosmosis (EO). In particular, the EO effect arises from the fact that when an aqueous solution contacts certain active materials (acidic or caustic), the solution is charged. If an acidic active material such as silica is used, the aqueous solution will be positively charged. On the other hand, if caustic material is used, the solution will be negatively charged. In either case, the application of an electric field to the charged solution creates a force in the solution that moves it.
[0003]
In EO action, only a very thin layer of the solution in direct contact with the active material becomes charged. Typically, this layer of the charged solution has a very shallow depth approximately equal to the Debye length (eg, 10 nm). As a result, only a relatively small volume of the solution can be charged by the EO action. Nevertheless, in order to be able to move the aqueous solution through the tube, despite the small amount of solution being charged, the force generated in the charged solution by the applied electric field simply exceeds the pressure head in this tube There is a need.
[0004]
Although EO effects can be used effectively for microfluidic device engineering, it is well known that there are certain important limitations. Most notably, these limitations are related to the size of the available tubing and the magnitude of the electric field that can be used to propel the charged aqueous solution through the tubing. As far as the electric field is concerned, the high current density that generates this electric field is undesirable for at least two reasons. First, the high current density can cause the solution in the tube to be overly resistively heated. Second, the high current density at the electrode that generates the electric field can generate gas in the tube by electrolysis of water. This destroys the electric field. As far as the size of the tube is concerned, the pressure head in the tube that resists the movement of liquid through the tube is of utmost importance. Heretofore, small-diameter (typically, radii must be less than 10-20 microns) tubes have been required in order for the EO effect to be useful in overcoming pressure heads. . With this in mind, a mathematical analysis of the EO effect and its interaction with the resistive pressure head in the tube is beneficial.
[0005]
For an example of conventional flow in a tube flowing by EO action while resisting a pressure head, consider a tube made of an EO active material, such as silica, having a lumen of radius "a". I will try.
[0006]
In a thin layer near the wall of the tube, the flow velocity u of the flow by the EO driven by the electric field is given by the equation u = λΣV / 2ηL
Where λ is the thickness of the layer (typically 10 nm), Σ is the charge density of the wall (typically 10 −2 coulomb / m 2 ), V is the voltage, η is the viscosity of the fluid, and L is The length of the tube. Speed is
ζ = λΣ / ε
Can be expressed in terms of zeta potential ζ defined as ε is the dielectric constant of the fluid.
[0007]
Poiseille flow, which is propelled by the pressure head and resists the EO flow described above,
Where p is a pressure head and a value of a >> λ is assumed. Under such conditions, the total flow rate in the tube Γ is: = { 0 a 2πvrdr = π a 2 {u-pa 2 / [8Lη]}
Given by
[0008]
Therefore, the condition that the propulsion by EO exceeds the pressure head is a 2 <4λΣV / p
Given by
[0009]
From the above equation, it is recognized that if a large pressure head is desired, the radius "a" of the tube must be very small. As a result, the throughput is extremely small. The optimum radius with other parameters being constant is a 2 = 2λΣV / p
And the overall flow rate is Γ = πa 2 u / 2
It becomes.
[0010]
From the above equation, it can be seen that the electroosmotic (EO) effect is a surface effect. Therefore, the EO action is significantly influenced by the size of the surface area of the active material exposed to the aqueous solution.
[0011]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In light of the foregoing, it is an object of the present invention to provide a tubular electroosmotic pump for pumping an aqueous solution, wherein the active material is exposed to the solution per unit length of tubing used. An object of the present invention is to provide an electroosmotic pump that effectively increases the size of the surface area. Another object of the present invention is to provide a tubular electro-osmotic pump that can effectively use a lumen having an increased cross-sectional area. It is yet another object of the present invention to provide an electroosmotic pump that increases efficiency with little or no increase in voltage requirements to eliminate the undesirable generation of gases due to resistive heating and electrolysis of the pump. . Yet another object of the present invention is to provide an electro-osmotic pump that can be used in various ways as a switch or valve as well as a pump. It is another object of the present invention to provide an electroosmotic pump that can effectively incorporate a trapped air isolator that prevents clogging of the operating elements of the pump and maintains low conductivity. is there. It is also an object of the present invention to provide an electroosmotic pump that is relatively simple to manufacture, easy to use, and relatively cost effective.
[0012]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The electroosmotic pump according to the present invention provides a structure that significantly increases the area of the interface between the active element (eg, silica fibers) and the aqueous solution in which the active element is immersed. As a result, more aqueous solution can be charged by the active element, and low field charges are effective in generating a pumping force on the solution.
[0013]
According to the present invention, there is provided a container for holding an active element in an aqueous solution. Preferably, the container is tubular and has a lumen defining an axis extending from one end of the tube to the other. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the active element comprises a plurality of fibers spun together into a thread. This thread is then positioned within the lumen of the tubular container to create a pump tube. Importantly, the yarn extends between the ends of the pump tube with the yarn fibers aligned generally parallel to the axis of the pump tube. Next, the lumen of the pump tube is filled with an aqueous solution that interacts with the yarn and charges the aqueous solution. For the present invention, the cross-sectional area of the bore of the pump tube as viewed from a plane perpendicular to the axis of the pump tube has an area equal to "A", while the collective cross-sectional area of the yarn fibers in this plane Is intended to be approximately equal to half of “A” (ie, A / 2).
[0014]
Electrodes are located at each end of the pump tube to generate an electric field in the lumen of the pump tube. Preferably, one of these electrodes is at zero potential, while the other electrode has a negative or positive potential, and the resulting electric field is directed generally parallel to the axis of the pump tube. Thus, whenever an electric field is applied to the pump tube, a force is generated in the charged aqueous solution that moves the aqueous solution through the pump tube.
[0015]
An extension tube can be combined and connected to one end of the pump tube in fluid communication. Importantly, depending on whether the extension tubing is connected to a potential V at the end of the pump tubing or to zero potential (ground), the extension tubing will each go from zero potential (ground) to a voltage potential V. Or vice versa. The pump tube and the extension tube together define a pumping section of the electro-osmotic pump according to the present invention. Further, to increase the pumping power of the electro-osmotic pump, a plurality of these pumping sections can be connected together in series with alternating pump and extension tubes. It is important that there is no need to use a high voltage, as the voltage can be applied in parallel to the series connected pumping sections.
[0016]
An important option of the present invention involves an extension tube. In one embodiment, the extension tube can be filled with an aqueous solution. However, this is not a requirement. In particular, in situations where it is desirable to pump a fluid other than an aqueous solution, the extension tube may be at least partially filled with air bubbles. The bubbles then block the aqueous solution and the thread in the pump tube from any different fluid being pumped by the pumping section in the extension tube. Other options of the present invention involve varying the orientation of the pump and extension tubes and their respective cross-sectional areas. As discussed for the present invention, these various orientations and modifications allow the electroosmotic pump according to the present invention to be used as a valve or switch in addition to its conventional use as a pump.

According to theoretical analysis, the difference y in water level is y = y 0 {1-exp [−t / τ]}.
Should behave like
y 0 = 4λΣV / [a 2 ρg]
τ −1 = b 2 a 2 ρg / [16R 2 ηL]
Obtain the values of y 0 and τ from equation [1] above using experimental data. An example of a set of values is y 0 = 4.82 centimeters and τ = 3.48 × 10 4 seconds. Using experimental parameters V = 65 volts, b = 1.5 mm, R = 7.5 mm, L = 5 cm, η = 10 −3 kg / ms and ρg = 10 4 hg / m 2 s 2 Then
λΣ = 1.1 × 10 −10 coulomb / m
ζ = λΣ / ε = 155 mV
a = 7.5 × 10 −6 m
It is possible to obtain ρgy 0 /V=7.5 Pascal / volt.
