TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to the field of digital image processing, and more particularly to a gradation conversion method for ensuring smooth contrast over an entire image and an image processing system using the same.
[0002]
[Prior art]
In order to create an image equivalent to a conventional X-ray film, a method of performing gradation conversion using an S-shaped gradation curve is used. A sigmoid function represented by the following equation (1) has been used as a basic function of the S-shaped gradation curve.
[0003]
(Equation 1)
[0004]
FIG. 2 shows an example of a gradation curve based on such a sigmoid function.
Since the sigmoid function is bilaterally symmetric, a function representing the sum of the sigmoid functions represented by the following equation (2) is used when creating a function representing a double-gamma gradation curve that is bilaterally asymmetric. Have been.
[0005]
(Equation 2)
[0006]
[Patent Document 1]
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. H11-088688
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the tone curve of the double gamma expressed by the above equation (2) becomes an unnatural S-shaped curve when the interval between the first term curve and the second term curve is large.
FIG. 3 shows an example of such an unnatural gradation curve (for example, Patent Document 1).
[0008]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The sigmoid function of the above equation (1) has a function of symmetrical as in the graph of FIG. 2, the parameter C 0 represents the slope. If C 0 is a small value, a gentle sigmoid function as shown in FIG. 4 is obtained, and if C 0 is a large value, a steep sigmoid function as shown in FIG. 5 is obtained.
[0009]
In order to create a double-gamma gradation curve, the parameter C 0 of the sigmoid function is not a constant but a smooth function (for example, the same sigmoid function as the gradation curve), so that a gradual sigmoid function becomes sharper. With the sigmoid function (or vice versa), a continuously changing double gamma gradation curve can be created.
[0010]
If a gradation conversion look-up table is created based on such a smoothly changing double gamma gradation curve and gradation conversion is performed, the image can be converted into an image in which the contrast is secured in all pixel areas without excess and deficiency.
[0011]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
FIG. 1 is a schematic diagram showing the overall configuration of an example of a radiation image processing system according to the present invention.
X-rays generated from the X-ray source 3 controlled by the X-ray generator control unit 4 penetrate the patient 2 and are detected by the X-ray sensor 1. The detected X-ray is input to the image input unit 5 as a digital X-ray image.
[0012]
The input digital X-ray image is subjected to image processing such as X-ray sensor correction processing, gradation processing, and spatial filtering processing by the image processing unit 7. The processed digital X-ray image is displayed on the diagnostic monitor 9, stored in the image storage unit 8, and output to the printer 12, the diagnostic workstation 13, and the image database 14 via the network 11.
[0013]
If the displayed and output images are not satisfactory, the image processing and display are repeated while changing the image processing parameters. The above operations are performed by the operation unit 10.
FIGS. 6 and 7 show an example of an embodiment of creating a double gamma gradation curve in a gradation conversion process operating in such a system.
[0014]
FIG. 6 is an example of a chest image. The chest image is an image having a wide dynamic range from a lung field region having a high pixel value to a mediastinum region having a low pixel value. In this chest image, a region important for diagnosis is a lung field region, and high contrast is required in this region.
[0015]
On the other hand, the mediastinum region is of low importance in diagnosis, so that the contrast may be reduced. However, it is necessary to avoid the loss of the contrast and the collapse.
Therefore, for such a chest image, a double gamma gradation curve as shown in FIG. 6 in which a large inclination is assigned to the lung field region and a small inclination is assigned to the mediastinal region, and gradation conversion may be performed. .
[0016]
FIG. 7 is an example of a knee image. A region important for diagnosis in a knee image is a bone region, and a high contrast is required in this region. Further, the soft tissue region is of low importance in diagnosis, so that the contrast may be reduced. However, it is necessary to avoid the loss of the contrast and the collapse.
[0017]
Therefore, for such a knee image, a double gamma gradation curve as shown in FIG. 7 in which a large inclination is assigned to the bone region and a small inclination is assigned to the soft tissue, and gradation conversion may be performed.
[0018]
Next, a specific method of creating such a double gamma gradation curve will be described.
First, a basic function is defined. Here, a sigmoid function is given as one example.
The sigmoid function is given by the following equation.
[0019]
[Equation 3]
[0020]
The slope of the sigmoid function can be specified by the parameter C.
Therefore, two sigmoid functions S 1 (x) and S 2 (x) are created by the gradients C 1 and C 2 according to the region of interest.
[0021]
For example, a large C 1 if the region of interest lung, may be a small C 2 if the mediastinal region of interest. The sigmoid functions S 1 (x) and S 2 (x) thus created are connected.
[0022]
To join, simply join first and then smooth the joint. FIG. 8 is a diagram for explaining a simple joining method.
Here, first, a value range of the sigmoid function is set in order to extract a necessary section of the sigmoid function. This value range is defined as [y min , y max ].
[0023]
The sections of the sigmoid functions S 1 (x) and S 2 (x) corresponding to this range are [x min1 , x max1 ] and [x min2 , x max2 ], respectively.
Then, y mid is set to determine a boundary between the sigmoid functions S 1 (x) and S 2 (x), and positions in the section corresponding to the y mid are x mid1 and x mid2 , respectively. The sigmoid functions S 1 (x) and S 2 (x) are synthesized by combining x mid1 and x mid2 .
[0024]
In order to match x mid1 and x mid2 , the sigmoid function S 2 (x) is shifted by a shift amount d = x mid1 −x mid2 . The sigmoid function S (x) synthesized in this way is as follows.
[0025]
(Equation 4)
[0026]
The slope of the sigmoid function S (x) synthesized in this manner changes discontinuously at the joint x mid1 . In order to smooth the discontinuity of the gradient, the transition from the parameter of the sigmoid function S 2 (x) to the parameter of the sigmoid function S 1 (x) is made smoothly around the joint x mid1 .
[0027]
The same sigmoid function as the gradation curve function is used as an example of a function for smoothly transitioning this parameter.
The parameters using the sigmoid function are the slope c and the shift amount d, and those parameters converted to sigmoid functions are c (x) and d (x). The basic sigmoid function S 3 (x) for this parameter function is defined by the following equation using the slope c 3 , similarly to the gradation curve function.
[0028]
(Equation 5)
[0029]
In this basic sigmoid function S 3 (x), which range [y min, y max] a position in the section corresponding to the y mid an interval corresponding to a [x min3, x max3] and x mid3. shift amount d 3 for adjusting the x mid1 and x mid3 becomes d 3 = x mid1 -x mid3. The function obtained by shifting S 3 (x) by the shift amount d 3 and clipping the function to the range [y min , y max ] into the range [c 2 , c 1 ] and [d, 0] is c ( x) and d (x).
[0030]
The sigmoid function using the parameter functions c (x) and d (x) as parameters is a smooth double gamma function.
To create a gradation conversion look-up table using this double gamma sigmoid function as a gradation curve function, a section [x min2 , x max1 ] and a range [y min , y max ] are defined as a range of pixel values of an image (for example, 0-4095).
[0031]
When the gradation conversion is finally performed, such a gradation conversion lookup table is expanded and contracted and shifted so that the lookup table is corrected so as to have a desired inclination for each range of the region of interest. To perform gradation conversion.
[0032]
【The invention's effect】
A smooth double-gamma gradation curve can be created, and by performing gradation conversion with this smooth double-gamma gradation curve, an image can be obtained with sufficient and sufficient contrast over the entire pixel area, and diagnostic performance Is improved.
