Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
According to the present invention, the surface of a photoreceptor, which is an image bearing member, is positively charged, and image information is written on the charged surface with visible light and line scanning laser light, and further formed into a toner image, which is transferred to a transfer material. The present invention relates to an electrophotographic apparatus having a cleaning unit for cleaning the surface of a photoreceptor after a transfer process.
[0002]
That is, the present invention relates to an invention applied to an electrophotographic apparatus such as a printer, a copying machine, a facsimile or the like using an a-Si photosensitive member.
[0003]
[Prior art]
Conventionally, based on a so-called Carlson process, process means for exposing, developing, transferring, cleaning (removing residual toner), removing electricity, and charging are arranged on the outer peripheral surface of a photoreceptor to form an image by a predetermined electrophotographic process. Electrophotographic devices are well known.
[0004]
In particular, in cleaning devices, a device made of a band-like elastic material such as urethane rubber is often used. Such a cleaning blade has an excellent effect of removing toner and the like remaining on the photoconductor, and is widely used in low-speed to high-speed electrophotographic apparatuses.
[0005]
On the other hand, some photoconductors used in electrophotographic apparatuses have recently used an a-Si photoconductor in order to improve durability and achieve free maintenance. The a-Si photoreceptor is harder than OPC and other organic photoreceptors, so that even when cleaning with the cleaning blade as described above, the photoreceptor surface has very little abrasion and exhibits high durability. It is very effective in high speed electrophotography.
[0006]
Conventional electrophotographic photoconductors have excellent charging ability and photosensitivity by setting the absolute value of the dielectric breakdown voltage when a voltage having a polarity opposite to the charging polarity of the photoconductor is applied to the surface of the photoconductor to 500 V or more. Potential characteristics can be obtained. (See Patent Document 1)

[0008]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In recent digital electrophotographic methods, a latent image is written by a laser or an LED array after uniform charging of a photoconductor, and toner is applied to a surface of the photoconductor on which the latent image is written by a developing unit. Granted. In this case, there are two types of methods: a reversal development method in which a toner image is formed on a portion where a latent image is written with a laser or the like, and a normal development method in which a toner image is formed on a portion where a latent image is not written.
[0009]
In the analog type electrophotographic method, a normal development method is used because the reflected light of the document from the document table is directly used as a latent image writing unit on the photosensitive member.
[0010]
In the digital method, it is easy to use both the normal development method and the reversal development method. However, from the viewpoint of the light emission intensity and life of the laser or LED array, it is better to reduce the light emission time of the laser or LED array as much as possible. This is advantageous and often uses a reversal development method.
[0011]
Further, due to the recent increase in the speed of electrophotographic apparatuses, digital electrophotographic apparatuses, which used to be 30 to 40 sheets per minute (A4 width) per minute, have been increased to 60 sheets per minute (A4 width) or more. Some even have copy speed. In such a case, the surface speed of the photoreceptor needs to be about 260 [mm / sec] or more.
[0012]
Further, as a cleaning unit, a method of cleaning toner remaining on the photoconductor by a cleaning blade provided in contact with the photoconductor is often used.
[0013]
When the reversal development method is used, the charging polarity of the photoconductor and the charging polarity of the toner are the same, such that the polarity of the toner is positive and the polarity of the photoconductor is positive. In the process of the photoconductor and toner having the same polarity, when the surface of the photoconductor moving at high speed is removed (cleaned) by the cleaning blade, the toner is peeled off from the photoconductor, and as a result, the polarity is opposite to the polarity of the toner. A polar voltage is generated on the photoreceptor surface. Then, a voltage having a polarity opposite to the generated polarity of the photoconductor is applied only to the surface protective layer regardless of the stopping power of the lower charge blocking layer constituting the photoconductor. When the voltage applied to the surface protective layer is continuously generated for a long period of time, the charge retaining ability of the surface protective layer is minutely destroyed. As a result, when the charge retaining ability of the photosensitive member is reduced on the charging polarity side, the potential is reduced in that portion, and a portion where the density is high occurs on the image, which appears as density unevenness.
[0014]
Such a peeling discharge increases as the speed at which the toner is peeled off from the photoreceptor surface is higher (that is, the process speed on the photoreceptor surface is higher), or as the amount of toner (applied amount) developed on the photoreceptor surface is larger. The occurrence frequency and the degree of occurrence tend to increase, and are becoming more prominent as a serious problem in the recent trend of improving print speed.
[0015]
The present invention has been made in view of the above problems, and in an electrophotographic apparatus using an a-Si photoreceptor, in a high-speed machine using reversal development, the destruction of a surface protective layer due to discharge discharge of residual toner is prevented, and a good image is obtained. An object of the present invention is to provide an electrophotographic photosensitive member for positive charging and an electrophotographic apparatus which can be provided stably over a long period of time.
[0016]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The present inventors have focused on the charge retention ability of the surface protective layer with respect to the cause of the surface protective layer destruction due to the peeling discharge of the residual toner by the reversal development method with respect to the electrophotographic apparatus using the a-Si photosensitive member, The relationship between the physical properties of the photoreceptor and the destruction of the surface protective layer was studied diligently.
[0017]
As a result, as for the electrophotographic apparatus in which the process speed of the photosensitive member is 320 mm / sec or more, the photosensitive member substrate is grounded and the photosensitive member surface is 10 cm 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoreceptor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is:
−18 (V) ≦ Vd (V) <0 (V)
It has been found that the use of a positively charged electrophotographic photoreceptor characterized in that the surface protective layer can be prevented from being broken.

[0024]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
Embodiments of the present invention and the reasons for the effects will be described below.
[0025]
The present invention uses a positively charged electrophotographic photosensitive member, a charging unit for positively charging the surface of the photosensitive member, a latent image forming unit for writing image exposure, a developing unit for forming a toner image by a reversal developing method, and a toner. The present invention relates to an electrophotographic apparatus having a transfer unit for transferring an image to a transfer material, and a fixing unit, and including at least a unit for cleaning toner remaining on the photoconductor, and a photoconductor used in such an electrophotographic apparatus.
[0026]
In the present invention, the photoreceptor substrate is grounded and the photoreceptor surface is 10 cm. 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoreceptor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is:
−18 (V) ≦ Vd (V) <0 (V)
It is characterized by being.
[0027]
In the present invention, the mechanism of preventing the surface protective layer from being destroyed on the surface of the photoconductor due to the discharge of the residual toner is as follows. That is, the present inventors have found that by controlling the voltage of the polarity opposite to the charging polarity generated by the peeling discharge so as not to be easily applied to the surface protective layer of the photoreceptor, the destruction of the surface protective layer can be prevented. . Specifically, the substrate of the photoconductor is grounded, and the surface of the photoconductor is 10 cm. 2 A voltage of -2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoconductor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is specified. By controlling the photoreceptor so as to have a value of, a voltage having a polarity opposite to the charging polarity generated by the peeling discharge can be suppressed so as not to be easily applied to the surface protective layer of the photoreceptor, and the above-described problem can be avoided. Was.
[0028]
In this method, the destruction of the surface protective layer depends on the process speed on the surface of the photoconductor of the mounted electrophotographic apparatus. When the process speed is less than 320 mm / sec, there is a tendency that the problem due to the peeling discharge does not occur.
[0029]
In the electrophotographic apparatus of the present invention, by using the photoconductor having the above configuration, even when the process speed of the photoconductor surface is set to 320 mm / sec or more, it is possible to prevent the destruction of the surface protective layer due to peeling discharge.
[0030]
Also, the larger the amount of toner (applied amount) developed on the surface of the photoreceptor, the larger the amount of toner to be peeled off and the more easily the surface protective layer is destroyed, but by using the photoreceptor of the present invention, Even when the toner transmission density excluding the transfer material component of the solid black image after transfer and fixing is set to 1.65 or more, it is possible to prevent the destruction of the surface protective layer due to peeling discharge.
[0031]
Next, the electrophotographic photosensitive member for positive charging used in the present invention will be described in detail with reference to the drawings.

【Example】
Hereinafter, the present invention will be described specifically with reference to Examples and Comparative Examples, but the present invention is not limited thereto.
[0077]
[Example 1]
Using the RF-PCVD apparatus shown in FIG. 3, under the conditions shown in Table 1, 4 electrophotographic photoconductors for positive charging of A to D each containing amorphous silicon as a base were formed on a cylindrical conductive substrate having a diameter of 108 mm and a length of 358 mm. This was produced.
[0078]
A direct voltage application method (see Non-Patent Document 1: Journal of the Electrographic Society of Japan, Vol. 22, No. 1, (1983), pp. 77-84) is applied to these photoconductors A to D to measure the potential of the photoconductors. The substrate is grounded and the photoconductor surface is 10cm 2 A voltage of -2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoconductor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is measured. did.
[0079]
Regarding the above-described measurement, details of the photoreceptor measuring apparatus using the direct voltage application method will be described below. As shown in FIG. 6, the high-voltage power supply amplifies the output from the D / A converter using an operational amplifier having a fast response. A resistor and a capacitor can be inserted between the power supply and the photosensitive member as necessary, so that the charging time constant can be changed. The D / A converter is controlled by a computer. Four light sources are arranged in front, rear, left and right, and are exposed by a reflection mirror arranged below the electrode. Various filters can be set between each light source and the photoconductor. Here, 601 is a mirror, 602 is a shutter, 603 is a filter, 604 is a halogen lamp, 605 is an ND filter, 606 is an interference filter, and 607 is a motor.
[0080]
Next, the measurement sequence will be described. The measurement in this experiment was performed as a capacitor model in which the electrophotographic photosensitive member was regarded as a capacitor. FIG. 7 shows a measurement sequence, and FIG. 8 shows a schematic diagram of a measurement circuit. The measurement proceeds as shown in FIG. Specifically, a predetermined applied voltage Va = −2 (kV) is applied to the surface of the photoconductor, and after about 0.02 sec, the potential of (Vd + Vc) is measured, and then the potential of the Vc component is measured. Vd obtained from these results was defined as the photoconductor surface potential.
[0081]
Table 2 shows the measurement results of the photoconductors A to D. In the production of the photoreceptor in which Vd (V) was changed, the photoconductor was produced by changing the flow ratio of silane gas and methane gas in the surface layer, the film thickness of the surface layer, and the power as shown in Table 1.
[0082]
[Comparative Example 1]
Using the RF-PCVD apparatus shown in FIG. 3, under the conditions shown in Table 1, three electrophotographic photoconductors for positive charging of EG having amorphous silicon as a base were formed on a cylindrical conductive substrate having a diameter of 108 mm and a length of 358 mm. This was produced.
[0083]
In this comparative example, the substrate of the photoreceptor was grounded and the surface of the photoreceptor was 10 cm in the potential measurement method of the direct voltage application method measured in Example 1. 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and the voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoconductor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is As shown in Table 2, the photosensitive member E is −21 V, the photosensitive member F is −31 V, and the photosensitive member G is −65 V.
[0084]
In the production of the photoreceptor in which Vd (V) was changed, the photoconductor was produced by changing the flow ratio of silane gas and methane gas in the surface layer, the film thickness of the surface layer, and the power as shown in Table 1.
[0085]
As described above, the positive charging electrophotographic photosensitive members A to G produced in Example 1 and Comparative Example 1 were mounted on a Canon iR8500, which is an electrophotographic apparatus having the configuration shown in FIG. A durability test was performed on one million sheets under the conditions that the toner transmission density excluding the transfer material component was 1.92 and the process speed of the photosensitive member was 450 mm / sec. The endurance was performed under the N / L environmental conditions shown in Table 3 where toner discharge easily occurs. The transmission density was measured using Macbeth D200-II, and the transmission density including the transfer material and the toner and the toner transmission density excluding the transfer material component from the transmission density of only the transfer material were determined. The endurance chart used a solid black image portion and a solid white image portion shown in FIG. 6 in the circumferential direction of the photoreceptor. The photoreceptor was evaluated for two items, “image density unevenness” and “voltage drop rate”. The method of each evaluation item is shown below.
[0086]
"Image density unevenness"
In the HT image, a change in density of a portion corresponding to a solid black image was evaluated in three stages as shown below by an objective change in image density by visual observation.
:: No change in image density can be confirmed
Δ: Image density change, but no problem in practical use
X: A level at which there is a change in image density, which poses a practical problem.
[0087]
"Potential drop rate"
The voltage was measured by a direct voltage application method (see Non-Patent Document 1: Journal of the Institute of Electrophotography, Vol. 22, No. 1, (1983), pp. 77-84). 2 A voltage of +2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage applied to the photoreceptor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is defined as a Vd (V) potential. 5, a difference ΔV2 (== 2) between the potential V0 before the endurance test of the mixed portion of solid black and solid white (the region where the solid black portion ratio to the entire mixed portion is 20%) and the potential V1 after the endurance test in the same region. V0-V1) divided by the potential V0 before the durability test was evaluated as a potential decrease rate.
[0088]
Table 2 shows the results of Example 1 and Comparative Example 1. As is clear from the results shown in Table 2, the photosensitive member was grounded by the potential measurement method of the direct voltage application method in Example 1 and the photosensitive member surface was set to 10 cm. 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoreceptor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is: At -18 V or more, it was confirmed that a potential reduction rate of 30% or less was obtained and that image density unevenness did not occur. Further, the potential drop rate decreases as Vd (V) increases. However, when Vd (V) is 0 (V), the charging performance of the photoconductor may be slightly affected. It was found that -18 (V) ≦ Vd (V) <0 (V) was suitable as a favorable range.

(Example 2)
Using the RF-PCVD apparatus shown in FIG. 3, one electrophotographic photosensitive member for positive charging mainly comprising amorphous silicon was produced on a cylindrical conductive substrate having a diameter of 108 mm and a length of 358 mm under the conditions shown in Table 4. .
[0093]
In addition, the electrophotographic photosensitive member for positive charging manufactured in the present example measures the potential by a direct voltage application method (see Non-Patent Document 1: Journal of the Electrophotographic Society, Vol. 22, No. 1, (1983), pp. 77-84). The photoconductor substrate is grounded and the photoconductor surface is 10 cm 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and the voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoconductor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is This is a positive charging electrophotographic photosensitive member having a characteristic of -5V.
[0094]
(Comparative Example 2)
Using the RF-PCVD apparatus shown in FIG. 3, one electrophotographic photosensitive member for positive charging mainly composed of amorphous silicon was produced on a cylindrical conductive substrate having a diameter of 108 mm and a length of 358 mm under the conditions shown in Table 4.
[0095]
In this comparative example, the substrate of the photoreceptor was grounded and the surface of the photoreceptor was set to 10 cm by the potential measurement method of the direct voltage application method measured in Example 2. 2 A voltage -2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoreceptor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is: -34V.
[0096]
The electrophotographic photoreceptor for positive charging prepared as described above was mounted on a copying machine modified from Canon iR8500, and the toner transmission density excluding the transfer material component of a solid black image was 2.02. Two items of “image density unevenness” and “potential drop rate” were evaluated in the same manner as in Example 1 while changing the process speed.
[0097]
Table 5 shows the evaluation results. As is clear from Table 5, the surface of the photosensitive member was set to 10 cm by grounding the substrate of the photosensitive member by the potential measurement method of the direct voltage application method. 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and the voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoconductor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is With the electrophotographic photoconductor for positive charging of Example 2, which is -5 V, even when the surface speed of the photoconductor is 320 (mm / sec) or more, the potential reduction rate is within 30%, and it can be confirmed that image density unevenness does not occur. Was.

(Example 3)
Using a VHF-PCVD apparatus shown in FIG. 2, six electrophotographic photoconductors for positive charging mainly composed of amorphous silicon were produced on a cylindrical conductive substrate having a diameter of 80 mm and a length of 358 mm under the conditions shown in Table 6. .
[0101]
In addition, one of the six electrophotographic photoconductors for positive charging manufactured in the present embodiment is a direct voltage application method (Non-Patent Document 1: Journal of the Electrophotographic Society, Vol. 22, No. 1, (1983), p. 77). To page 84), the photoconductor substrate was grounded and the photoconductor surface was 10 cm. 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and the voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoconductor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is −. It is an electrophotographic photosensitive member for positive charging having a characteristic of 10V.
[0102]
(Comparative Example 3)
Using a VHF-PCVD apparatus shown in FIG. 2, six electrophotographic photosensitive members for positive charging mainly composed of amorphous silicon were produced on a cylindrical conductive substrate having a diameter of 80 mm and a length of 358 mm under the conditions shown in Table 6.
[0103]
In this comparative example, one of the six positively-charged electrophotographic photoconductors was measured by the potential measurement method of the direct voltage application method measured in Example 3, and as a result, The substrate is grounded and the photoconductor surface is 10cm 2 A voltage -2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and a voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoreceptor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is: -39V.
[0104]
The electrophotographic photoreceptor for positive charging prepared as described above was mounted on a Canon iR6000 modified for reversal development, and the transfer material component of a solid black image was removed under the condition that the process speed of the photoreceptor was 340 mm / sec. Then, two items of “image density unevenness” and “potential reduction rate” were evaluated in the same manner as in Example 1 while changing the toner transmission density.
[0105]
Table 7 shows the evaluation results. As is clear from Table 7, the surface of the photoreceptor was set to 10 cm by the potential measurement method of the direct voltage application method, with the substrate of the photoreceptor grounded. 2 A voltage of −2 (kV) is directly applied to the other end of the 4400 pF capacitor connected in series to the region for 0.02 sec, and the voltage Vd (V) applied to the photoconductor surface 0.2 sec after disconnection is −. The electrophotographic photoreceptor for positive charging of Example 3, which is 10 V, has a potential reduction rate of 30% or less even when the toner transmission density excluding the transfer material component of the solid black image is 1.65 or more, and the image density unevenness is low. It was confirmed that it did not occur.

【The invention's effect】
According to the present invention, by setting the charging characteristic of the photoconductor to a specific range, even when the copying speed is increased, damage to the photoconductor by peeling discharge when the developer toner is peeled off from the photoconductor surface is reduced. However, a clear image can be obtained over a long period of time.
