TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a two-dimensional photonic crystal having a geometrical arrangement defect, and more particularly to a two-dimensional photonic crystal in which two kinds of transparent media having significantly different refractive indices are regularly and alternately arranged at a period of about a light wavelength. The present invention relates to a two-dimensional photonic crystal having a geometric arrangement defect in which a lattice defect having a geometric arrangement is locally formed in a periodic arrangement.
[0002]
[Prior art]
A conventional example will be described with reference to the drawings.
A photonic crystal can be formed by periodically arranging holes or transparent medium rods having a certain refractive index in a transparent medium having a different refractive index. In FIG. 1A, the photonic crystal is formed by a
[0003]
A photonic crystal waveguide and a wavelength separator formed using the two-dimensional photonic crystal described here have been developed (see JP-A-2001-272555). Referring to FIG. 2, in this publication, a medium having a lower refractive index than the slab 11 is periodically arranged on a slab 11 made of a material having a higher refractive index than air to form a refractive index distribution. It has a two-dimensional photonic crystal structure, and has
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
In the above-described photonic crystal, when light / electromagnetic waves are introduced / extracted into / from this photonic crystal, it is necessary to provide an external optical path for transmitting / receiving light to / from the photonic crystal. That is, one external light path is formed in the
[0005]
By adjusting and changing the diameter of the point-like defect 14, it is possible to select the wavelength of light / electromagnetic wave that can be extracted / introduced according to the diameter. It changes sensitively to diameter, making it difficult to implement fine tuning changes in wavelength.
The present invention provides a two-dimensional photonic crystal having a geometrically arranged lattice defect that solves the above-mentioned problem.
[0006]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
The tuning characteristic of the light wavelength in a WDM device is improved by using a two-dimensional photonic crystal. An optical resonator is formed by locally changing a part of a periodic arrangement of media regularly and alternately arranged at a cycle of a light wavelength forming a two-dimensional photonic crystal and disturbing the arrangement. Further, the number of manufacturing steps can be reduced by forming the optical path collectively in the same plane as the photonic crystal.
[0007]
BEST MODE FOR CARRYING OUT THE INVENTION
According to the present invention, a part of the periodic structure of a two-dimensional photonic crystal in which two kinds of transparent media having significantly different refractive indices are arranged in a square lattice at a period of about the light wavelength is locally separated. It is formed into a structure of the shape and dimensions. That is, the structural portion having a locally different shape and size corresponds to a defective portion of the two-dimensional photonic crystal. In the present invention, this defect is expressed as a geometrical arrangement defect.
Referring to FIG. 3,
[0008]
Referring to FIG. 4,
[0009]
Referring to FIG. 5, also in this case,
[0010]
4 and 5, the diameter d of the silicon rod is 234 nm, and the lattice spacing a between the silicon rods is 586 nm. Using this medium and the two-dimensional photonic crystal having the shape and dimensions, a low-loss wavelength filter that passes only a wavelength of 1.55 μm can be realized. Hereinafter, description will be made with reference to FIG.
In FIG. 6A,
[0011]
In FIG. 6, a simulation was performed on the waveguide of light having wavelengths of 1.47 μm, 1.51 μm, 1.55 μm, and 1.59 μm. The simulation is performed mainly using, for example, FDTD software such as software “Full Wave” manufactured by RSSoft. In the simulation, the length of the rod was infinite.
In FIG. 6A, light having a wavelength of 1.55 μm is horizontally incident on the end face of the
[0012]
In the present invention, the coupling cavity waveguide CCW first plays a role of selecting light having a wavelength in the 1.55 μm region, which is an optical wavelength for optical communication. Further, only light having a wavelength of 1.55 μm is selected by the
Here, optimization of the transmittance of light having a wavelength of 1.55 μm will be described with reference to FIG. FIG. 6B is a diagram for explaining that the transmittance of light having a wavelength of 1.55 μm is optimized by changing the size of the resonator having the rectangular array of defects. The positions of the
[Table 1]
The light transmission is optimized when the distance d 'is zero. By changing the distance between the four silicon rods operating as a resonator, the transmittance of light of a selected wavelength can be significantly changed. Here, when the silicon rod forming the geometric resonator approaches the silicon rod forming the periodic structure of the photonic crystal by about d '= 0.02 μm as an example, the light transmittance sharply decreases. I do. On the other hand, when the silicon rod forming the geometric resonator is separated from the silicon rod forming the periodic structure of the photonic crystal, that is, when d ′ is made negative, the light transmittance becomes linear. A slow or slow decrease.
[0013]
According to the present invention, a wavelength demultiplexer that separates and transmits light having different wavelengths can also be formed. This will be described with reference to FIGS. Note that this demultiplexer is divided into FIGS. 7 and 8 for convenience, but is originally one.
Light having a wavelength of 1.56 μm and light having a wavelength of 1.60 μm can be transmitted through two different waveguides. That is, light having a wavelength of 1.56 μm is transmitted via the waveguide shown in FIG. 7, while light having a wavelength of 1.60 μm is transmitted via the waveguide shown in FIG. This demultiplexer can be composed of one

[Table 2]
As an example, by changing the position of the silicon rod at the position indicated by 1 by d ′ = 0.02 μm, light having a wavelength of 1.56 μm can be transmitted with high transmittance in the 62 direction. This transmittance decreases almost linearly when the shape and size of the
[0015]
The optical resonators of FIGS. 7 and 8 have high wavelength tunability accuracy. This resonator was formed by adding two silicon rods having a distance equal to the center distance a of the original silicon rods constituting the periodic structure of the two-dimensional photonic crystal into the two-dimensional photonic crystal. The displacement from the original position of the silicon rod constituting the periodic structure of the two silicon rods is √ (2) a / 2 = 414 nm in the examples of FIGS. As a result of the simulation, a wavelength difference of 40 nm between 1.56 μm light and 1.60 μm light is selected by the displacement of 414 nm. For a displacement of the rod of 10 nm, the wavelength selection accuracy can be estimated to be about 1 nm. Thus, the optical resonator of the present invention, comprising geometrical defects, is relatively easy to manufacture. This is because a change in diameter of about 1 nm corresponds to a change in wavelength of 1 nm in the conventional example.

To summarize the above, a photonic composed of one medium that develops two-dimensionally and one medium that has a different refractive index from one medium that is periodically arranged in a square lattice in one medium. In the crystal, a geometrical arrangement defect in which the other medium is locally formed in a triangular arrangement, a geometrical arrangement defect in a rectangular arrangement, and a geometric arrangement formed by rotating 45 degrees into a square arrangement Form one or more types of array defects, and form a cavity defect in which the other medium is not arranged at each of two or three consecutive grids aligned in a straight line, A waveguide is formed by the cavity defect, and can be used as a wavelength filter or a wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexer. 6 to 8, any external light path for the two-dimensional photonic crystal can be formed in the plane direction indicated by
[0017]
According to the present invention, the wavelength tuning characteristic can be improved by adding and displacing a silicon rod in addition to the original silicon rod constituting the periodic structure of the two-dimensional photonic crystal. The same can be achieved not only by using a silicon rod but also by using GaAs, InP, or another semiconductor having a high refractive index.
Two-dimensional photonic crystals can be manufactured by electron beam lithography and inductively coupled plasma etching. This makes it possible to easily manufacture a geometrical arrangement defect constituting the resonator of the present invention. Therefore, the coupling of the wavelength and the propagation mode in the two-dimensional photonic crystal waveguide can be effectively controlled. Large energy transfer between resonators consisting of geometrical defects can be expected, which leads to strong confinement of the light beam and efficient production of two-dimensional photonic crystal integrated circuits.
[0018]
The above two-dimensional photonic crystal according to the present invention can be used as an element constituting a narrow band spectral filter. A narrow-band spectral filter is an essential element in configuring a WDM optical device, and a narrow-band spectral filter extracts or takes in light of a specific wavelength at any place in an optical network. In WDM, it is required to separate multiple wavelengths. Using the same principle as that of the embodiment of FIGS. 7 and 8, a wavelength demultiplexer for splitting light of 128 or more different wavelengths can also be configured. The present invention can provide an optical communication device that operates over the entire optical communication wavelength band by using an extremely small two-dimensional photonic crystal integrated circuit. The two most important applications of the invention are wavelength multiplexer / demultiplexers.
[0019]
【The invention's effect】
As described above, according to the present invention, any external light path for the two-dimensional photonic crystal can be formed in the plane direction indicated by
Then, a geometric arrangement defect is locally formed in the two-dimensional photonic crystal, and the other medium is not arranged at every two or three continuous lattices aligned in a straight line. By adopting a configuration in which a cavity defect is formed and a waveguide is formed by the geometric arrangement defect and the cavity defect, the transmittance of light can be easily adjusted by adjusting the arrangement position of the geometric arrangement defect. be able to. In addition, by adjusting the arrangement position of the geometrically arranged defect, the light wavelength is more geometrically compared to the case where the wavelength of light or electromagnetic wave that can be extracted / introduced according to the diameter of the defect is selected. It is insensitive to the adjustment of the array position of the array defect, and facilitates fine adjustment change of the wavelength.
