Abstract
Description
【0001】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an image forming apparatus using an electrophotographic method, such as a copying machine, a printer, a facsimile, and a multifunction peripheral thereof, and more particularly, to an improvement in a charging bias control technique of the image forming apparatus.
[0002]
[Prior art]
2. Description of the Related Art Conventionally, image forming apparatuses such as copiers and printers using an electrophotographic system (electrostatic transfer system) have been widely known. Such an image forming apparatus obtains a toner image on a recording sheet by a so-called electrophotographic process such as charging, exposure, development, and transfer. Here, as a technique for charging the surface of the photoreceptor, a contact-type charging roll that contacts and charges the surface of the photoreceptor is known. On the other hand, in order to stably obtain good image quality, it is important to always uniformly charge the surface of the photoreceptor to a target surface potential.
[0003]
In order to uniformly charge the surface of the photosensitive member to a target surface potential using a contact-type charging roll, the following techniques have been conventionally proposed. First, (1) a device in which a surface potential measuring device (surface potential probe) is provided so as to face the photoconductor, and the charging bias applied to the contact-type charging roll is controlled based on the measurement result from the surface potential measuring device. Can be And (2) a method in which a current flowing from a contact-type charging roll to a photoreceptor is measured, and a charging bias applied to the contact-type charging roll is controlled based on the measurement result (for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open No. H8-334965). Gazette, JP-A-10-247006).
[0004]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, these conventional techniques have the following problems. That is, if (1) (separately) a surface voltmeter is provided, it is disadvantageous in terms of cost and space. On the other hand, when the charging bias is controlled based on the current value flowing through the (2) (existing) contact type charging roll, noise such as dark current and inflow current from other process members is large, and the charged charge is accurately controlled. It is difficult to judge.
[0005]
The present invention has been made in view of such a technical problem, and an object thereof is to provide an image forming apparatus capable of more accurately controlling the potential of the surface of an image carrier with a low-cost and small configuration. Is to do.
[0006]
[Means for Solving the Problems]
That is, the present invention provides a rotating image carrier, a charger for contacting the image carrier and charging the surface of the image carrier with a predetermined charging bias, and an exposure for forming a latent image on the charged image carrier surface. A developing device for developing a latent image formed on the surface of the image carrier to form a toner image, and at least one transfer body, which is formed on the image carrier in contact with the image carrier. A transfer device that transfers the toner image onto a recording sheet, and a conductive member that contacts the image carrier, a power supply unit that applies a reference voltage to the conductive member, and a reference voltage is applied. A detection unit that measures a current value flowing into or out of the conductive member through the image carrier due to a potential difference at the image carrier contact portion caused by the measurement, and a measurement result of the current value Based on And it has a control unit for controlling the charging bias applied to the charging member. In general, the support base of the image carrier is electrically grounded.
[0007]
As described above, the surface potential of the image carrier is determined by the conductive member, so that it is not necessary to use an expensive and large surface potential measuring device, and the charging bias control can be performed while reducing the cost and size of the apparatus. It can be carried out. In addition, since the charging bias is controlled based on the measurement result of the current flowing through the conductive member different from the charged member, the surface potential of the image bearing member can be more accurately controlled.
[0008]
Here, the conductive member may be a cleaning member that retains residual toner on the image carrier. In this case, since the cleaning body is used for removing (holding) residual toner on the one hand and for measuring current (charging bias control) on the other hand, the apparatus can be further simplified, downsized, and reduced in cost. . At this time, the power supply unit applies a cleaning bias to the conductive member (cleaning member) to form a potential gradient between the image bearing member and the conductive member (cleaning member) in contact with the image bearing member. It can be configured to retain residual toner on the body. Further, the residual toner temporarily held by the cleaning body can be released at a certain timing (cleaning sequence). At this time, the power supply unit applies a reverse cleaning bias to the conductive member to form a potential gradient between the image bearing member and the conductive member that comes into contact with the image bearing member, and retains the residual voltage held by the conductive member. The toner is released onto the image carrier. The conductive member (cleaning body) can be configured as a brush roll in which a conductive resin brush is planted on a rotatable roll member made of metal, for example.
[0009]
The charging bias applied to the charging member includes (1) a superimposed charging bias of a DC component and an AC component, and (2) a DC charging bias of only a DC component (having no AC component).
[0010]
Here, (1) when the superimposed charging bias is applied, there is a merit that the potential control is easy, but on the other hand, there is a possibility that the surface of the photoconductor is roughened by an electric discharge stress, a rise in discharge noise, There are disadvantages such as the possibility of moire in the image due to the AC frequency. On the other hand, when the (2) DC charging bias is applied, there is no danger of roughening the surface of the photoreceptor due to electric discharge stress, rising of discharge noise, and moire of an image due to AC frequency (or). On the other hand, there is a merit that the potential can be reduced.
[0011]
Therefore, the present invention can be applied to both (1) the case of applying the superimposed charging bias and (2) the case of applying the DC charging bias. Is applied, on the other hand, a DC charging bias is applied which does not cause (or can reduce) the risk of roughening the surface of the photoreceptor due to electric discharge stress, the rise of discharge noise, and the moire of the image due to the AC frequency. The present invention is particularly preferable because it allows the potential control to be performed accurately while enjoying the merit of the above case. The control unit can control only the DC component of the charging bias regardless of whether (1) the superimposed charging bias is applied or (2) the DC charging bias.
[0012]
In addition, the power supply unit applies a plurality of different reference voltages as a reference voltage applied to the conductive member, and the control unit performs the control based on a plurality of measurement results obtained according to each reference voltage. It is also possible to control the charging bias applied to the charging member. Further, the control unit may control the charging bias applied to the charging member based on a plurality of measurement results obtained at a plurality of different timings. Further, the control unit applies a preset reference charging bias to the charging member, and measures at a timing when the surface of the image carrier uniformly charged by the reference charging bias is in contact with the conductive member. The charging bias can be controlled based on the obtained current value. By employing these configurations, the surface potential of the image carrier can be more accurately controlled.
[0013]
The control unit may control a charging bias based on a current value measured at a timing when the conductive member is in contact with a non-image area in a subsequent image formation on the image carrier surface. Can be. Furthermore, the control unit controls the charging bias based on a current value measured at a timing when the conductive member is in contact with a non-image area in a subsequent image formation on the image carrier surface, The charged body can uniformly charge an area to be an image area in the immediately subsequent image formation with the controlled charging bias. The “non-image area” may be a “non-image forming area” in an area corresponding to the paper passing area. By employing these configurations, the surface potential of the image carrier can be more accurately controlled.
[0014]
In addition, the control unit may include an environment measurement unit that measures ambient temperature and / or humidity, and the control unit may control a charging bias applied to the charged body based on a measurement result of the temperature and / or humidity. By employing these configurations, the surface potential of the image carrier can be more accurately controlled.
[0015]
Further, at least the image carrier, the charging member, and the conductive member may be configured as an integral cartridge, and may be detachable from the image forming apparatus main body. Further, the cartridge includes a nonvolatile memory for storing a use history of the cartridge, and a nonvolatile memory for transmitting the content of the nonvolatile memory to the image forming apparatus main body when the cartridge is mounted on the image forming apparatus main body. The image forming apparatus main body includes a second connector connected to the first connector section when the cartridge is mounted on the image forming apparatus main body, and the control section, The control unit may receive the usage history from the non-volatile memory of the mounted cartridge, and control the charging bias applied to the charged body based on the usage history. By employing these configurations, it is possible to more accurately control the surface potential of the image carrier even when the cartridge is detached or replaced.
[0016]
The image forming apparatus according to the present invention may be configured as a single-color image forming apparatus, or may be configured as a multi-color image forming apparatus. When configured as a multicolor image forming apparatus, the image carrier may include a plurality of image carriers for different colors as the image carrier, and may be configured to include one intermediate transfer body as the transfer device, A plurality of image carriers for different colors are provided as image carriers, and a first upstream intermediate transfer body that is in contact with a part of the plurality of image carriers as the transfer device, and a remainder of the plurality of image carriers is provided. A first downstream intermediate transfer member that contacts a part of the first upstream intermediate transfer member and the first downstream intermediate transfer member, and a toner image is formed from the first upstream intermediate transfer member. A second intermediate transfer member on which a toner image is transferred from the first downstream intermediate transfer member after the transfer, and a final transfer member in contact with the second intermediate transfer member; When the recording sheet passes between the The toner image may be configured to finally transferred onto chromatography and. The plurality of image carriers may include three image carriers for yellow, magenta, and cyan, or four image carriers for yellow, magenta, cyan, and black. You may. Further, an image carrier of a color other than these may be provided.
[0017]
When four image carriers are provided, four image carriers for yellow, magenta, cyan, and black are provided as the image carriers, and two of these four image carriers are used as the transfer device. A first upstream intermediate transfer member and a first downstream intermediate transfer member that are in contact with the two image carriers; and a first upstream intermediate transfer member and a first downstream intermediate transfer member that contact the first intermediate transfer member and a first downstream intermediate transfer member. A second intermediate transfer member on which the toner image is transferred from the first downstream intermediate transfer member after the toner image is transferred from the upstream intermediate transfer member, and a final transfer member that contacts the second intermediate transfer member. And when the recording sheet passes between the second intermediate transfer member and the final transfer member, the toner image may be finally transferred onto the recording sheet.
[0018]
Further, the surface roughness (Rz) of the final transfer member can be 20 [μm (Rz)] or less, and the surface roughness (Rz) of the intermediate transfer member can be 10 [μm (Rz)] or less. It can be. Further, the final transfer member can be configured to have a larger surface circular roughness (Rz) than the intermediate transfer member. These surface roughnesses (Rz) are preferably not more than the average particle diameter of the toner constituting the toner image. Satisfying these conditions is preferable because the residual toner easily transfers from the final transfer member to the intermediate transfer member (second intermediate transfer member). In addition, the surface of the final transfer body can be constituted by a resin coat layer or a resin tube layer.
