【0024】
Po=η・(ILD−Ith)
【0025】

【0044】
I0=(Dmod0/255)*(Scale/255)*Ifull
【0045】
I1=(Dmod1/255)*(Scale/255)*Ifull
【0046】
ここで、Imn=(Dmodn/255),Km=(Scale/255)*Ifull(n=0,1)である。
【0047】
Imod=Imn*Km
【0048】
【0049】
ILD=Ai*(Ibias+Imod)
【0050】
【0052】
Ipd=α・S・Po
【0053】
【0054】
Imon=Gpd・Giv・Ipd=Gpd・Kpd・Po
【0055】
【0056】
Itarget=K・Pt
【0057】
カウンタ19の初期値はCLD信号によって設定され、PScale(記録時初期値)あるいはRScale(再生時初期値)が設定される。
【0067】

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a CD-R drive device, a CD-RW drive device, a DVD-R drive device, a DVD-RW drive device, and a DVD + RW provided with light source control means for controlling and driving the output light amount of a light source such as a semiconductor laser light source. The present invention relates to an information recording device such as a drive device and a DVD-RAM drive device.
[0002]
[Prior art]
2. Description of the Related Art In an optical disc device that records information on a recordable optical disc (information recording medium) by optical modulation of a laser beam emitted from a semiconductor laser light source (Laser Diode: LD) that is a light source mounted on an optical pickup, Beam overwrite technology and technology to control the optical modulation waveform by multi-pulse and multi-valued levels to control the recording mark shape for higher density information recording are indispensable. It is necessary to control to always have a desired value.
Generally, the threshold current of a light source (LD) fluctuates due to a change in temperature or the like. Therefore, simply maintaining a constant drive current causes a fluctuation in the amount of light. For this reason, a method called APC (Automatic Power Control) control is used in which a part of the emitted light amount of the light source is monitored and received by the light receiving element, and the drive current of the light source is controlled so that the monitored light receiving signal matches a predetermined target value. Can be
[0003]
However, in order to perform high-speed recording of information and high-density recording of information, the light modulation frequency increases, and it is difficult to accurately monitor the amount of emitted light with a light receiving element having a limited frequency band. Therefore, normally, a low-frequency component of the monitor light-receiving signal is detected and controlled so as to match a target value corresponding to a previously calculated average irradiation light amount (this control method is referred to as an “average value control method”). When the constant light amount period is relatively long (the level at which the monitor light receiving signal is set), control is performed so that the sampled level matches the target value (this control method is referred to as a “sample hold control method”). You are doing.
[0004]
In addition, the gradient of the drive current-optical output characteristic of the semiconductor laser light source (referred to as "differential quantum efficiency") also fluctuates greatly due to a change in temperature or the like, and the differential quantum efficiency also causes a change in the amount of emitted light. To solve the problem caused by the fluctuation, a method of measuring the differential quantum efficiency and correcting the driving current of the light source according to the measurement result, that is, detecting the level of the monitor light receiving signal with respect to the irradiation light amount of two predetermined points. A method of calculating the differential quantum efficiency from the level difference between the two detected monitor light-receiving signals and correcting the drive current of the light source according to the calculation result (for example, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open Nos. 2000-294871 and 08-235629). Gazette). As a method of calculating the differential quantum efficiency, detection is performed by providing a predetermined calibration period, and control is performed according to the detection result.
[0005]
However, when the present invention is applied to an information recording apparatus, the continuous recording time may be as long as one hour or more, and a calibration period cannot be inserted during the continuous recording. Recording for a long time (even a few minutes depending on the LD used) is significantly insufficient and insufficient.
On the other hand, in order to insert a calibration period in the middle of recording, the recording operation is temporarily stopped, and the optical pickup is moved or defocused to a position where there is no information recording medium (or information recording area) and is not recorded on the information recording medium. For example, it is necessary to perform calibration by changing the state, and there is a problem that the recording speed is reduced. Also, depending on the optical pickup, different values are obtained at the time of focusing and at the time of out-of-focus due to the influence of the returning light, etc. In some cases, there was a problem.
[0006]
Furthermore, as a method of detecting and controlling the differential quantum efficiency during the recording operation, data loss is prepared based on the idea that low-frequency data loss that occurs during recording is reduced by the error correction function during reproduction. A method has been proposed in which a control pulse is inserted by inserting a special differential quantum efficiency detection pulse different from the original recording pulse. However, in such a method, it is true that data loss occurs, and there is a problem that the control band cannot be increased because the detection pulse cannot be inserted frequently.
[0007]
By the way, when performing additional recording or rewriting on an information recording medium, it is desirable to perform recording with an appropriate recording power immediately after information recording. Otherwise, the data immediately after the start of information recording cannot be accurately reproduced. In particular, when recording is performed without providing a link area at the time of additional recording or rewriting as in the DVD + R / RW format, data is recorded immediately after the start of information recording (dummy data is recorded in a format in which a link area is provided). In some cases, recording with an appropriate recording power is more strictly required.
[0008]
In addition, at the switching point between normal reproduction and recording, the recording power is greatly different, and the temperature fluctuation of the light source often becomes large. That is, the fluctuation of the threshold current and the differential quantum efficiency also become large. Control is required.
Further, as described above, depending on the optical pickup, the drive current-light output characteristics may be different between the focused state and the out-of-focus state due to the influence of the return light and the like. In such a method, it is difficult to perform recording with an accurate light amount immediately after the start of information recording.
[0009]
[Problems to be solved by the invention]
However, the conventional information recording apparatus has a problem that it is not possible to control the desired light amount at a high speed immediately after the start of the information recording.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION The present invention has been made to solve the above-described problems. Therefore, even if the threshold current and the differential quantum efficiency of a light source fluctuate, a special recording pulse that causes data loss or a recording operation is not interrupted. It is an object of the present invention to control the driving current so as to obtain the desired output light quantity and to quickly control the output light quantity to a desired output light quantity immediately after the start of information recording.

Next, a light source to be driven / controlled will be described.
FIG. 2 is a diagram illustrating an example of a drive current-light output characteristic.
Normally, the light output Po with respect to the LD drive current ILD of the light source can be approximated by an arithmetic process based on the following equation (1). Here, η: differential quantum efficiency, Ith: threshold current.
[0024]
(Equation 1)
Po = η · (ILD-Ith)
[0025]
In order to obtain a desired optical modulation waveform P (FIG. 2B), when the LD drive current ILD is the sum of the bias current Ib and the modulation current Im (Ib + Im), the bias current Ib is substantially equal to the threshold current Ith. Equally, the modulation current Im may be driven by a current such that P = η · Im as shown in FIG.
However, in general, the threshold current Ith and the differential quantum efficiency η fluctuate not only due to variations among individuals but also due to temperature changes. Therefore, in order to always obtain a desired optical modulation waveform P, the threshold current Ith and the differential quantum efficiency It is desirable to control the bias current Ib and the modulation current Im according to the change in the efficiency η.
For example, as shown in FIG. 2 (ii), when the threshold current fluctuates to Ith 'and the differential quantum efficiency fluctuates to η', in order to obtain a desired optical modulation waveform P, the bias current Ib 'is changed to the threshold current Ith'. Then, the modulation current Im ′ may be controlled so that P = η ′ · Im ′ as shown in FIG.
[0026]
Next, a basic light source driving process (light source control process) in the information recording / reproducing apparatus will be described.

That is, in the light source control process, similarly to the above, the space level power Pt0 of the target light output shown in FIG. 10D and the space level power P0 of the light output P shown in (a-ii) of FIG. After controlling the bias current so that the values are equal, the average level power PtAvg of the target light output indicated by the dashed line in (d) of FIG. 10 and the light indicated by the dashed line in (a-ii) of FIG. The scale of the modulation current Im is controlled so that the average level power Pavg of the output P becomes equal. When the modulation current is generated by the DAC, the scale control of the modulation current Im can be realized by a method such as changing the full scale of the DAC or changing the current amplification factor of the modulation current.
[0030]
By controlling the bias current and the modulation current in this way, a desired light output is always obtained even with respect to the threshold current of the
Further, by making one control band of the bias current control and the modulation current control sufficiently faster (or slower) than the other, it is possible to improve the overall convergence. Since the variation of the differential quantum efficiency of an ordinary light source occurs relatively more slowly than the variation of the threshold current, it is preferable to increase the control band of the bias current.
[0031]
The light source control process of the information recording / reproducing apparatus may be performed as follows.
FIGS. 6 to 8 are diagrams showing waveforms of other examples when the characteristics of the
(C) of each figure is a characteristic diagram of the light output Po with respect to the LD drive current ILD of the
[0032]
In this light source control process, first, as shown in FIG. 7, the average level power PtAvg of the target light output indicated by the dashed line in FIG. 7D and the dashed line in (a-ii) of FIG. The bias current is controlled so that the indicated average power level Pavg of the optical output P becomes equal. Further, in addition to the bias current control shown in FIG. 7, as shown in FIG. 8, the space level power Pt0 of the target light output shown in FIG. 8D and the light output shown in FIG. The scale of the modulation current Im is controlled so that the space level power P0 of P becomes equal.
In this way, a desired light output can always be obtained even with respect to the threshold current and the differential quantum efficiency of the light source.
[0033]
Further, another light source control process in the information recording / reproducing apparatus will be described. In this light source control process, as shown in FIG. 5, after controlling the bias current so that the space level power Pt0 of the target light output and the space level power P0 of the light output P become equal, the average value of the target light output is obtained. The scale of the modulation current Im is controlled such that the difference ΔPt between the level power PtAvg and the space level power Pt0 and the difference ΔP between the average level power Pavg of the optical output P and the space level power P0 become equal.
In this way, a desired light output can always be obtained for the threshold current of the light source and the fluctuation of the differential quantum efficiency as described above.
[0034]
Similarly, after controlling the bias current so that the average value level power PtAvg of the target light output and the average value level power Pavg of the light output P become equal, the average value level power PtAvg of the target light output and the space level power The scale of the modulation current Im may be controlled so that the difference ΔPt from Pt0 and the difference ΔP between the average level power Pavg of the optical output P and the space level power P0 become equal.
In this way, a desired light output can always be obtained for the threshold current of the light source and the fluctuation of the differential quantum efficiency as described above.
In the above example, the case where the space level power and the average value level power are used as the detection values has been described. However, the same effect can be obtained by detecting and controlling other level powers.
The light source control processing described above is suitable for a dye-based recording medium such as a CD-R disc, a DVD + R disc, and a DVD-R disc.
That is, the light emission waveform when recording on the information recording medium (for example, the light waveform of the waveform shown in FIG. 10D) has a sufficient level difference between the space level power and the average value level power, so Can be performed with high accuracy.
[0035]
On the other hand, the following light source control processing is more suitable for a phase-change recording medium such as a CD-RW disc, a DVD + RW disc, a DVD-RAM disc, and a DVD-RW disc. The light source control processing will be described with reference to FIG.
FIG. 18 is a diagram for explaining a light source control process for a phase change recording medium in the information recording / reproducing apparatus.
Similar to FIGS. 3 to 5 and FIGS. 6 to 8, FIG. 18C is a characteristic diagram of the light output Po with respect to the driving current ILD of the light source, and FIG. FIG. 18D is a waveform diagram illustrating an optical output waveform P, and FIG. 18D is a diagram illustrating a desired target optical output waveform Ptarget.
[0036]
The bias current Ib is set so that the erase level power Pt1 of the target optical output and the erase level power P1 of the optical output P are equal to each other, or the average level power PtAvg of the target optical output and the average value of the optical output P, as described above. The level power Pavg is controlled to be equal (the former method is used in FIG. 18).
Then, as shown in the figure, during a predetermined period in the long space, light is emitted at the η detection level power P3 (the level indicated by the broken line) different from the erase level power P1, and the erase level power P1 and the η detection level power P3 are used. The scale of the modulation current Im is controlled such that the difference ΔP between the two becomes equal to the difference ΔPt between the two levels of the target light output.
Similarly, the scale of the modulation current Im may be controlled so that the η detection level power P3 is equal to the η detection level power Pt3 of the target light output.
[0037]
Normally, a phase-change recording medium such as a CD-RW disc hardly deteriorates the recording characteristics with a slight change in erase power. Further, since the fluctuation of the differential quantum efficiency is mainly caused by the temperature change, the control band may be slow, and the light emission frequency at the special power η detection level power P3 may be small. There is no adverse effect on recording performance.
In this way, the light source can always emit a desired amount of light with respect to the fluctuation of the differential quantum efficiency without affecting the recording performance.
[0038]
Next, a light source driving device that executes the light source control process in the information recording / reproducing device will be described in detail (description according to

It is assumed that an information recording medium is recorded with a plurality of pulse trains (hereinafter, referred to as multi-pulse recording) to form a recording mark. . Also, it supplies a target level signal Dtarget, which is data generated by selecting the modulation data Dmod0, Dmod1,..., Dmodn according to the modulation switch signal Smod. The modulation data Dmod0, Dmod1,..., Dmodn are preset to a desired light emission level via the
Further, a control timing signal (for example, an ApcSmp signal or the like) of each unit described later is also generated from the recording clock signal WCK and the recording data signal Wdata in accordance with the modulation switch signal Smod.

That is, in the case of the current output type, a signal obtained by converting the input monitor light receiving signal into a voltage by the current / voltage converter 11 is selected, and in the case of the voltage output type, a signal not passing through the current / voltage converter 11 is selected.

The
The gain switching amplifier (GCA) 15 switches the gain of the monitor light-receiving signal subjected to the offset adjustment in accordance with the gain switching signal PDGain (for example, four-stage switching of 1/4/8/16 times) and performs gain adjustment. In general, the amount of reproduction light and the amount of recording light are greatly different, so it is preferable to switch the gain at least during recording / reproduction. The light receiving current Ipd of the light receiving element PD can be obtained by an arithmetic process based on the following equation (6), where α is the light use efficiency for the LD emitted light Po, and S is the light receiving sensitivity of the PD.
[0052]

Ipd = α ・ S ・ Po

The target (Target) DAC 25 outputs a light emission reference signal Itartet according to the target level signal Dtarget.
Here, assuming that the proportionality coefficient between the emitted light amount Pt and the light emission reference signal Itarget is K, it can be obtained by arithmetic processing based on the following equation (8).
[0056]
(Equation 8)
Itarget = K ・ Pt
[0057]
The proportional coefficient K is determined by setting the scale Kt of the target DAC 25, and is set in advance so that K = Kpd. The scale Kt may be set by applying a voltage / current from a DAC or externally. Since Kpd changes depending on variations in the light use efficiency α and the light receiving sensitivity S of the used light receiving element PD with respect to the LD outgoing light Po, this setting should be made at the time of initial adjustment.
Further, the scale Kt may be changed according to the gain Gpd of the gain switching amplifier 15 (that is, K = Kpd · Gpd). Further, Kt may be fixed and Gpd may be adjusted (in this case, the
Therefore, when the LD output light Po is equal to the target output light amount Pt, Imon = Itarget.

As shown in FIG. 11, the reference
The scale of each DAC sets the above-mentioned scale Kt. This is suitable when it is difficult to realize a DAC having high-speed response.
Further, in order to share the switch with the DAC, a configuration as shown in FIG. 15 may be adopted. Here, the

In this way, the bias current Ibias is controlled so that the difference signal becomes zero, that is, the monitor signal Imon matches the light emission reference signal Itartet. In addition, since the output of the
[0061]
Generally, the light receiving signal of the light receiving element PD is band-limited by the light receiving element PD and the circuit to be used, and the monitor signal Imon has, for example, a waveform as shown in FIG. Also, (e ') of the figure is a waveform example of the monitor signal Imon' when the band is lower. Since the modulation band of the light source becomes higher as the recording speed increases, even if the PD band is the same, this is relatively small. It becomes such a waveform.
Therefore, it is difficult to obtain an accurate light emission level from the monitor signal Imon during a period in which the light source is modulated at high speed (during multi-pulse light emission).
In this embodiment, such a problem is taken into consideration, and the monitor signal Imon is compared with the light emission reference signal Itarget only during the period when the value of the monitor signal Imon (or Imon ′) is settled.
[0062]
That is, as described above, the integration operation of the difference signal is performed only during the period when the control timing signal ApcSmp signal is “High (Hi)”, and the control timing signal ApcSmp is set to the predetermined period (space of the monitor signal) when the space level power P0 is irradiated. (Determined in consideration of the band) so as to generate “High (Hi)”. Furthermore, depending on the band of the monitor signal, sampling may be performed in a space longer than a predetermined length, and sampling may not be performed below that. For example, assume that no sample is taken in the second space in FIG.
In this way, control can be performed such that the space level power P0 is always equal to the target value Pt0.
Further, the control speed can be changed by the SRSel signal. This is performed by changing the charge / discharge current to the integrator (for example, the output current of the error amplifier 20). This makes it possible to set the control speed to an optimum value during recording / reproduction.

This embodiment is preferable because the levels can be easily compared with each other.
More specifically, as the monitor average value level signal ImonAvg and the light emission reference average value level signal ItAvg become substantially constant, the cutoff frequencies of the

Further, in order to suppress the fluctuation of the detection value due to the data pattern, the C-CK signal may be generated so that the counter is updated at a predetermined timing in a predetermined data pattern.
Further, since the optimal cutoff frequency differs depending on the recording speed and the like, it is preferable that the cutoff frequencies of the

When the bias current control and the differential quantum efficiency control are performed as described above, a desired optical output is always obtained even with respect to the threshold current of the light source and the variation of the differential quantum efficiency, and accurate recording can be performed.
Further, the convergence can be improved by making one control band of the bias current control and the differential quantum efficiency control sufficiently faster (slower) than the other. In a normal light source, the fluctuation of the differential quantum efficiency occurs relatively more slowly than the fluctuation of the threshold current. Therefore, the control band of the bias current should be made faster.

In the examples described above, the case where the detected value is the space level and the average value level has been described. However, similar effects can be obtained by detecting and controlling other levels. For example, when recording is performed with an optical waveform of one rectangular pulse as shown in FIG. 16D to form a recording mark, the monitor signal Imon can detect the peak level power P1 depending on the restricted band. become. Alternatively, it becomes possible with a predetermined mark length. Therefore, the above embodiment may be replaced with a peak level and an average level, or a peak level and a space level.

Incidentally, the initial value of the
That is, at the switching point between normal reproduction and recording, the recording power is greatly different, so that the temperature fluctuation of the light source is often large, and the differential quantum efficiency is largely deviated. In some cases, the drive current-light output characteristics may differ due to the influence of return light, and the initial value of the differential quantum efficiency calculated at the time of out-of-focus may be different from that at the time of actual recording.
[0085]
Therefore, in order to perform recording with an accurate amount of light immediately after the start of information recording, it is desired to perform differential quantum efficiency control at high speed.
On the other hand, since the temperature change of the light source is gradual at normal times, high speed is not required for the differential quantum efficiency control speed, and control accuracy is emphasized.

Further, since the response speed of the differential quantum efficiency control required according to the information recording speed is different, it is preferable to change the control band according to the information recording speed.
[0088]
Further, a predetermined period immediately after the start of the information recording in the high-speed mode is instructed by the FastMode signal.
