メーションのストリーミングのエミュレーションを可能にすることに関する。

ている。なぜなら、大半のユーザが、例えばグラフィックスアニメーション、オ

イルをダウンロードするのに十分高速なアクセスを持たないからである。しかし
ながら、ストリーミングは、ファイル全体が受け取られる前にクライアントのブ
ラウザ又はプラグ−インがデータの処理を開始することを可能にする。ストリー
ミングが作用するためには、ファイルを受け取るクライアント側が、データを訂
正することができ、該データを処理しているアプリケーションに安定したストリ
ームとして該データを送ることが出来なければならない。これは、クライアント
が所望以上に高速のデータを受け取る場合、余剰データはバッファされる必要が
あることを意味する。他方で、データが適時に到達しない場合、データのプレゼ
ンテーションは円滑ではないだろう。

ティを示すのに用いられる。本発明のコンテキスト内では、“ファイル”という
用語は、リアルタイムに生成されるデータ及び記憶装置から検索されるデータを
指しても良い。
ある又は開発中である技術の中に、VRML97及びMPEG-4がある。VRML97は“Virtua
l Reality Modeling Language(仮想現実モデル言語)”の略であり、インター
ネットにおいて対話式(interactive)3Dマルチメディアコンテンツを記述する
ための国際規格(ISO/IEC14772)のファイルフォーマットである。MPEG-4は、MP
EG(Moving Picture Experts Group)により開発されているISO/IEC規格である
。両方の規格において、グラフィカルコンテンツは、所謂シーングラフにおいて
構成される。シーングラフは、集合的にグラフィックスの世界を記述する座標系
及び形状(shape)の系統樹(family tree)である。シーンの系統樹において一
番上の項目はワールド座標系である。ワールド座標系は、1つ以上の子の座標系
及び形状の親の役割を果たす。そしてまた、それら子の座標系は更なる子の座標
系及び形状に対する親になり、以下同様である。

グにおいて不可欠であるストリームとタイムスタンプとの間の同期等のファシリ
ティはVRMLには存在しない。しかしながら、VRMLは、外部プログラムがVRMLのク
ライアントと対話する(interact)ことを可能にする機構を持っている。これは
、スポーツアプリケーションにおいて、クライアントにアニメーションデータを

このシステムは、テレビのスポーツ報道(coverage)を、略々リアルタイムにマル
チメディア性の富む(multimedia-rich)ウェブページで補完するコンテンツを
生成する。この例では、前記プロセスは2つのステップに収まる。まず、スタジ
アムのグラフィックスモデル及びサッカー選手のグラフィックスモデルが、外部
プログラム、この場合にはJavaアプレットと共にダウンロードされる。その場合

ることが出来る。次に、このアニメーションのデータが前記クライアントにダウ

ードをダウンロードする。補間ノードのセットを変更することにより、異なるア

補間ノード)を含む完全なVRMLファイルをユーザが選択することが出来るような
単一ステップのプロセスにある程度等価である。このアプローチは、クライアン
ト上であらゆるコンテンツが再生され得るようになる前に長いダウンロード時間
をもたらす。これは、特にコンテンツが即座に利用可能であるTVブロードキャス
トと比較した場合に苛立たしい経験として経験される。

ことが出来る。更に、MPEG-4は、圧縮されたバイナリフォーマットを用いるその
BIFSトランスポートプロトコルに起因してより効率的であるという利点を持つ。

つ。
結果として、大量のデータを、サーバにクライアントを接続しているネットワー
ク、例えばインターネット上で移送する必要がある。例えば、上記のサッカーブ
ロードキャストアプリケーションにおいては、22人のサッカー選手がアニメー
ション化される必要がある。個々の選手毎の各アニメーションデータ点は、3D
空間における位置、及び例えば選手のポーズ(posture)をモデル化するための
15個の接合回転部(joint rotation)一組を有する。これは63個の浮動小数
点の値に相当する。アニメーション更新速度が15データ点/秒であると仮定す
る場合、665Kbpsのビットレートが必要とされる。このビットレートは圧縮を
通して低減され得る。典型的には、BIFSの使用はビットレートを1/20に低減
し、約33Kbpsのビットレートを与える。しかしながら、この数はインターネッ
トプロトコル(RTP、UDP及びIP)、並びにオーディオ等の付加的なデータタイプ
に必要とされるオーバーヘッドを考慮していない。しかしながら、民生市場にお
いて現在市販されている標準的なモデムは、28.8Kbps又は33.6Kbpsの容
量を持つ。アニメーションのストリーミングが、帯域幅の制限に起因してエンド

ば100,000個のクライアントへのブロードキャストの場合には、データス

デルのコピーが矛盾しないままであることを保証する。この目的のために用いら
れ得るプロトコルの例は、DIS(Distributed Interactive Simulation)及びIST
P(Interactive Sharing Transfer Protocol)である。本発明の基礎を成す考え
は、アニメーションを状態の連続として記述するということである。例えば、サ
ッカーのソフトウェアのアプリケーションにおいて、アニメーションはフィール
ド上の選手の位置及び選手の動作状態の連続として記述される。所与の時点にお

漸進的に変化し、プロトコルはネットワークにわたってワールドモデルの状態を

ジェクトの状態情報の更新は、ネットワークにわたってクライアントに送られて
いるメッセージの生成をもたらす。

を更新する。ソースデコーダ314は2つタスクを実行する。まず、ソースデコ
ーダ314は受け取った状態情報に基づいてアニメーションを生成する。次に、
ソースデコーダ314は前記アニメーションに応じてシーングラフを管理する。
この場合、ソースデコーダ314はインテリジェントな構成要素である。即ち、
ソースデコーダ314は、アニメーション演算を実行し、更にパケット損失若し
くはネットワーク待ち時間ジッタ(network latency jitter)を隠蔽するための

化によりシステム全体で無矛盾が保たれている。他の例として、クライアント3
04は、ユーザが再生においてワールドモデルのレンダリングを制御する付加的
な状態情報を入力することを可能にしても良い。例えば、ユーザはバーチャライ
ブ・サッカーの試合を見る場合特定の視点を選択しても良い。この状態情報はサ
ーバ302には存在しないし、存在する必要もない。ワールドモデル及び状態情
報に基づく視点のレンダリングは、イメージが深さ情報(depth information)を
備えるビットマップとしてクライアント304に実際にストリームされる場合よ
りずっと複雑ではなく、必要とされる資源もより少ない。従って、先に述べた利
点に加えて本発明はユーザ対話性を促進する。

するようにサーバ302からのメッセージにより更新される。この状態情報に基
づき、翻訳局406はアニメーションを演算する。アニメーションデータは、BI
FS-Animフォーマットにおいて符号化され、MPEG-4クライアント204に伝送さ
れる。サーバ302は、システム300におけるものと同様である。翻訳局40
6は、一方で共有オブジェクトサポートプロトコルの下で伝送されるメッセージ
と、他方でBIFS-Animのビットストリームの下で伝送されるメッセージとの間の
変換を実行するモジュールである。局406は上記のチャネルデコーダ312、
ソーストランスコーダ(source transcoder)410及びチャネルエンコーダ4
12を持つ。デコーダ312はサーバ302から受け取ったメッセージを解釈し
、ローカルのワールドモデルのコピー318を更新する。ソーストランスコーダ
410は、状態情報に基づきアニメーションを演算するプログラムを有する。こ
のモジュールは、好ましくは、上記のソースデコーダ314と同様に、(補間又
は補外に基づく)パケット損失修復、推測、ローカルアニメーション等々のタス
クを実行する。チャネルエンコーダ412は、ソーストランスコーダ410の出
力に基づきBIFS及びBIFS-Animフォーマットにおけるビットストリームを生成す
る。

ファイルのストリーミングのエミュレーションのための基礎を成す。この場合、
クライアント602及び604は互いにオブジェクト616及び618も共有す
るが、サーバ302とは共有しない。例えば、クライアント602は、クライア
ント602により選択されるサッカーの試合のグラフィックス表現の視界を表現
するオブジェクト“視点”の所有者である。サーバ302から受け取った状態情
報に基づいて、クライアント602はスタジアムにおける特定の位置から眺めて
いるかのように試合のグラフィックスイメージをレンダリングする。前記イメー
ジのレンダリングは、サーバ302から受け取った現在の状態情報と、ローカル
のワールドモデルのコピーと、視点の選択を可能にするユーザ入力手段620、
例えばジョイスティック又はマウスを介したユーザ入力との組合わせに基づく。
クライアント604は、共有オブジェクトサポートプロトコルを用い、クライア
ント602の制御の下でクライアント602における視点オブジェクトとの無矛
盾が維持されている視点オブジェクトを共有する。オブジェクト616乃至61
8は、システム上の他のクライアントと共有されない。状態情報に基づく視点及
びワールドモデルのレンダリングは、イメージが実際に深さ情報を備えるビット
マップとしてクライアント602及び604にストリームされる場合よりずっと
複雑ではなく、必要となる資源もより少ないことに注意されたい。まして、シス
テム600は、主な所有権を備えるサーバを持たない完全な分散システムであっ
ても良い。多数のクライアント各々は、全てのクライアントから知覚可能である
ワールドモデルにおける各関連するオブジェクトを所有する。オブジェクトの所
有者は、共有ワールドモデル内の無矛盾性を維持するようにネットワークを通し
て伝搬させる状態変化を引き起こす。複数ユーザアプリケーションにおける効果
は、アニメーションのストリーミングのエミュレーションの結果としての厳しい
帯域幅制限のない各クライアントにおける継続的な再生である。

- 【請求項1】 ネットワークを介する該ネットワークに接続されている受け
局へのマルチメディアファイルのストリーミングをエミュレートする方法であり
、 −前記ファイルの各々の状態を記述した各々の状態情報を供給し、 −前記局が前記ネットワークを介して前記各々の状態情報を受け取ることを可能
にし、 −前記局が前記各々の状態情報の制御の下で前記ファイルを生成することを可能
にすることを特徴とする方法。 - 【請求項2】 −ストリーミングを通して前記ファイルを受け取り、 −受け取った前記ファイルに基づき前記各々の状態情報を生成することを特徴と
する請求項1に記載の方法。 - 【請求項3】 前記状態情報を前記局に伝達するために共有オブジェクトプ
ロトコルを用いることを特徴とする請求項2に記載の方法。 - 【請求項4】 前記各々の状態情報は、前記ネットワーク上で多数の受け局
にブロードキャストされることを特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - 【請求項5】 前記ファイルはグラフィックスアニメーションを有すること
を特徴とする請求項1に記載の方法。 - 【請求項6】 前記ファイルはオーディオを有することを特徴とする請求項
1に記載の方法。 - 【請求項7】 前記ファイルはビデオを有することを特徴とする請求項1に
記載の方法。 - 【請求項8】 ファイルを再生することを可能にする、ネットワークを介し
てデータを供給する方法であり、 −前記ファイルの連続する各々の状態を記述した各々の状態情報を前記ネットワ
ークにより供給し、 −前記ネットワークを介して前記各々の状態情報を受け取ることを可能にし、 −受け取ると前記各々の状態情報の制御の下で前記ファイルを生成することを可
能にすることを特徴とする方法。 - 【請求項9】 共有オブジェクトプロトコルを用いて前記データを供給する
ことをを特徴とする請求項8に記載の方法。 - 【請求項10】 ブロードキャストにおいて前記データを供給することを特
徴とする請求項9に記載の方法。 - 【請求項11】 サーバ−クライアントシステムにおいて用いられる局であ
り、 −サーバは少なくとも1つのクライアントに結合され、 −前記システムは、ネットワークを介する当該局へのマルチメディアファイルの
ストリーミングをエミュレートすることができ、 −前記サーバは、前記ファイルの各々の状態を記述した各々の状態情報を供給し
