Abstract

(57)【要約】 【課題】 本発明の目的は、ブラウザを有しない無線通
信装置に、インターネット又は他のネットワーク上のハ
イパーメディアコンテンツへアクセスすることを可能と
する方法と装置を提供することである。 【解決手段】 ネットワークから無線装置へコンテンツ
を提供する方法であって、無線装置は第２のプロトコル
に従っているがしかし第1のプロトコルには従っていな
い場合に、第1のプロトコルに従って、ネットワーク上
の資源からコンテンツを受信するステップと、コンテン
ツを、適切な表示のために無線装置により受信すること
のできるフォーマットのメッセージに変換するステップ
と、無線装置にメッセージを送るためのメッセージセン
タへ、メッセージを伝送するステップとを有する方法に
より構成する。

【発明の詳細な説明】
【０００１】
【発明の属する技術分野】本発明は、一般的には、イン
ターネットのようなネットワーク上のハイパーメディア
コンテンツにアクセスするための無線装置の使用に関す
る。特に、本発明は、ブラウザを装備していない無線装
置によりインタネーットに基づくハイパーメディアコン
テンツにアクセスすることを容易にする方法及び装置に
関する。
【０００２】
【従来の技術】情報へ瞬時にアクセスしたい人と企業に
対しては、インターネット及び、イントラネットは、巨
大な数の発信源からの情報の略実時間配送を提供する。
多くのこれらの人々には、位置に依らない通信方法とし
て、セルラ電話、２方向ページャ、個人ディジタルアシ
スタント（ＰＤＡ）、個人情報マネージャ（ＰＩＭ）、
及び、他の携帯計算装置のような、２方向通信技術が提
供されている。近年、これらの２つの急速に進歩する技
術領域は一緒になリ、２方向無線通信装置はインターネ
ット及び、イントラネットへの多くの入口の１つとなっ
ている。

準ウェブプロトコルと、マークアップ言語を使用する。
無線通信装置は、通例は、無線アクセスプロトコル（Ｗ
ＡＰ）又は、携帯装置転送プロトコル（ＨＤＴＰ）のよ
うな無線プロトコルを使用し、しばしば、同じタスクを
達成するために、無線マークアップ言語（ＷＭＬ）及
び、携帯装置マークアップ言語（ＨＤＭＬ）のようなマ
ークアップ言語を使用する。
【０００４】従来のＰＣと幾つかの新たな世代の無線装
置は、装置がインターネット及び他のネットワーク上の
ハイパーメディアコンテンツへアクセスすることを可能
とするブラウザソフトウェア（しばしば無線装置に対し

多くの早期世代の無線装置は、マイクロブラウザを装備
していない。マイクロブラウザの欠如は、そのような装

ービス（ＳＭＳ）として知られる設備を使用して、その
ような無線装置へ提供されている。ＳＭＳは、特定の無
線装置のユーザに（例えば、１６０文字までの）制限さ
れた長さの英数字メッセージを送受信することを可能と
する。ＳＭＳは、ページングと似ているが、しかし、Ｓ
ＭＳはメッセージが送信されるときに無線装置が活性化
され且つ受信領域内にいることを要しない。ＳＭＳメッ
セージは、一般的には、無線装置が活性化され且つ受信
領域内となるまでしばらく保持される。ＳＭＳメッセー
ジは、一般的には、小セル内又は、移動能力のある相手
に伝送される。ＳＭＳメッセージは、制限された長さで
あるが、しかし、ＳＭＳは、移動装置のユーザが、重要
な情報を受信することを可能とする。ＳＭＳメッセージ
は典型的には、サービスプロバイダに非常に低い運用コ
ストですむ狭帯域チャネルを通して送信される。
【０００６】ＳＭＳに基づくインターネットアクセス
は、おもに、無線装置のユーザから、所定のサーバによ

ＭＳメッセージは、情報を要求する無線装置へ配送され
る。典型的な例は、株相場の要求である。"キーワー
ド”メッセージは株シンボルであり、戻されるＳＭＳメ
ッセージは対応する相場情報である。

【発明が解決しようとする課題】現在の技術の１つの問
題は、ＳＭＳに基づくインターネットアクセスを提供す
るサービスプロバイダは、一般的には、インターネット
と無線ネットワークをリンクするのに慣習的な及び/又
は独占的な解決方法を使用することである。一度配備さ
れ運用されているこれらの技術は、ＷＡＰのような業界
で受け入れられる又は、広く使用されている標準に従う
ことは難しく困難である。ＷＡＰは、無線通信の分野で
次期プラットフォームの標準として認識され、デファク
トスタンダードとして多くのサービスプロバイダにより
採用されている。ＷＡＰに従った無線装置は、無線電話
装置製造者により採用され、ＷＡＰに従ったサービス
は、多くのサービスプロバイダにより提供されている。
それゆえ、インターネット上のハイパーメディアコンテ
ンツにマイクロブラウザ無しにアクセスできる無線装置
の良好な解決策が必要である。

【課題を解決するための手段】本発明は、ネットワーク
から無線装置へコンテンツを提供する方法及び、装置を
含む。本発明の特徴に従って、無線装置からの要求に応
じて、要求中で識別されたコンテンツは、ＨＴＴＰのよ
うなプロトコルに従ってネットワーク上のネットワーク
資源から受信される。無線装置はプロトコルに対応して
いないので、コンテンツは無線装置のメッセージ要求に
従うメッセージに変換される。１つの実施例では、メッ
セージは、ショートメッセージサービスセンタ（ＳＭＳ
Ｃ）により無線装置へ配送されるテキストフォーマット
のショートメッセージに変換される。
【０００９】本発明は、システム、方法、コンピュータ
読出し可能な媒体及び、種々の生産手段を含む異なる方
法で実行される。そのような２方向ページャの１つの利
益と優位点は、他の計算装置には一般的には利用できる
が無線装置に対しては指定されていないネットワーク資
源を受信できることである。他の優位点は、プロキシサ
ーバが、無線装置のためにそのような情報をフェッチす
るために取り出し要求が送信される前に”キーワードマ
ッピング”を行うことに関連しているので、無線装置に
関連する情報のみの配送を含む。

の少なくとも１つの実施例に含まれることを意味する。
更に、別の”１つの実施例”の参照は、同じ実施例を参
照する必要はないが、しかし、そのような実施例は、そ

と”プッシュ”モード動作の両方をサポートする。以下
に更に示すように、”プル”モードでは、インターネッ

を有しない無線装置からＳＭＳセンタ（ＳＭＳＣ）で受
信される。ＳＭＳＣは、ＳＭＳ要求を、インターネット
のような有線ネットワークに接続されたプロキシサーバ
につなぐ。プロキシサーバは、ＳＭＳ要求を異なる文字
セットへ変換符号化し、変換符号化された要求からキー
ワードを抽出する。プロキシサーバは、キーワードから
以後ＵＲＬとして参照されるユニフォームリソースロケ
ータ（ＵＲＬ）及び/又はユニフォームリソースインジ
ケータ（ＵＲＩ）のようなアプリケーション識別子への
マッピングを維持する。プロキシサーバは、ネットワー
ク上のサーバ上にあるアプリケーションのＵＲＬを識別
するために、キーワード−ＵＲＬマッピング内の抽出さ
れたキーワードを検索する。プロキシサーバは、キーワ
ードとＵＲＬを含むハイパーメディアプロトコル動作を
構成し、インターネットを介してアプリケーションへ、
動作を送る。アプリケーションからの要求されたコンテ
ンツを含むハイパーメディアプロトコル応答の受信をす
ると、プロキシサーバ応答からコンテンツを抽出し、ア
プリケーションにより使用されているコンテンツ形式か
らＳＭＳＣにより使用されるコンテンツ形式にコンテン
ツを変換する。プロキシサーバはそして、コンテンツ
を、アプリケーションで使用されている文字セットから
ＳＭＳＣで使用されている文字セットに変換符号化し、
ＳＭＳメッセージとして無線装置へ続いて配送するため
のＳＭＳ応答内の変換符号化されたコンテンツをＳＭＳ
Ｃへ送る。
【００１３】”プッシュ”モードでは、コンテンツアプ
リケーションは非同期に（即ち、要求の応答でなく）プ
ロキシサーバとＳＭＳＣを介して、コンテンツを無線装
置へ送る。そのような場合にはプロキシサーバは、ハイ
パーメディアプロトコル要求内のアプリケーションから
のコンテンツを受信し、上述のようにコンテンツを変換
し且つ変換符号化し、そして、無線装置へ伝送するため
に、ＳＭＳメッセージとしてＳＭＳＣへコンテンツを提
供する。
【００１４】図１は、無線通信装置（無線装置）が上述
のように使用されるネットワーク環境を示す図である。
無線装置１００は、無線電話のような、上述のどのよう
な形式の無線装置でも良い。説明を容易にするために、
無線電話の例は以下の説明で種々の箇所で使用する。こ
こで説明するように、無線装置１００は、ネットワーク
サーバ１１６及び１２０として示されているＷＭＬ書
類、ＨＴＭＬ書類、コンパクトＨＴＭＬ（ｃＨＴＭＬ）
書類、拡張可能マークアップ言語（ＸＭＬ）書類又は、
ＨＤＭＬ書類のような、遠隔的に蓄積されたハイパーメ
ディア情報を受信することが可能である。取り出された
ハイパーメディア情報は、ＳＭＳメッセージの形式で無
線装置１００へ提供される。ネットワークサーバ１１６
と１２０は、例えば、従来のパーソナルコンピュータ
（ＰＣ）又は、コンピュータワークステーションでも良
い。
【００１５】無線装置１００はディスプレイ１０２とキ
ーパッド１０３を有する。無線装置１００は、ＷＭＬカ
ード、ハイパーテキストマークアップ言語（ＨＴＭＬ）
ページ又は、同様なハイパーメディアコンテンツにアク
セスし且つ表示するマイクロブラウザを有していないと
する。しかし、更に、無線装置１００は、無線装置１０
０がＳＭＳメッセージを送受信できるＳＭＳ編集／読み
取り（以後”ＳＭＳエディター”と呼ぶ）を有するとす
る。
【００１６】無線装置１００と、ネットワークサーバ１
１６及び１２０の間の通信経路は、無線通信ネットワー
ク（”無線ネット”）１０４、プロキシサーバ１０８、
及び、地上のネットワーク（”地上ネット”）１１２を
含む。無線ネット１０４は、セルラ電話ディジタルパケ
ットデータ（ＣＤＰＤ）ネットワーク、移動グローバス
システム（ＧＭＳ）ネットワーク、符号分割多重アクセ
ス（ＣＤＭＡ）ネットワーク、又は、時分割多重アクセ
ス（ＴＤＭＡ）ネットワークのようなネットワークであ
る。無線ネット１０４で使用されている通信プロトコル
は、例えば、ＷＡＰ及び／又はＨＤＴＰを含む。地上ネ
ット１１２は、インターネット、イントラネット又は、
ローカルエリアネットワーク（ＬＡＮ）のようなプライ
ベートネットワークのデータネットワークのような又は
それらを含む地上に基づくネットワークである。地上ネ
ット１１２をサポートする通信プロトコルは例えば、転
送制御プロトコル（ＴＣＰ／ＩＰ）、ＨＴＴＰ又は、セ
キュアＨＴＴＰ（ｓＨＴＴＰ）でも良い。
【００１７】プロキシサーバ１０８は、無線ネット１０
４と地上ネット１１２の間のブリッジとして動作する。
プロキシサーバ１０８は例えば、従来のコンピュータワ
ークステーション又は、ＰＣでもよい。物理的に別の装
置として記載されているが、プロキシサーバ１０８は、
ネットワークサーバ（例えば、ネットワークサーバ１１
６及び１２０）内で、無線ネット１０４と地上ネット１
１２の間の接続を提供する既知の技術のようなハードウ
ェア及びソフトウェアで実行されても良い。プロキシサ
ーバ１０８は、ここで記載されている本発明の特徴を有
することを除いては、実質的にネットワークサーバ１１
６及び１２０と同じである。

グラム可能なマイクロプロセッサを含みうるプロセッサ
３０１、ディジタル信号プロセッサ（ＤＳＰ）、特定ア
プリケーション用集積回路（ＡＳＩＣ），プログラム可
能ロジックアレイ（ＰＬＡ）、フィールドプログラムマ
ブルゲートアレイ（ＦＰＧＡ）等又は、その組合せを有
する。無線装置１００は、入力する又は出力する信号を
受ける無線ネット１０４を介してキャリアネットワーク

６は、無線装置１００を外部装置（例えば、プロキシサ
ーバ１０８）に認識させる移動装置識別子（ＭＩＮ）を
蓄積し、且つＷＣＰインターフェース３１３へ供給す
る。ＭＩＮは、無線装置１００に関連し、プロキシサー
バ１０８のような関連するプロキシサーバ内に典型的に
は蓄積されるユーザ口座内の装置ＩＤに直接的に対応す
る、特定のコードである。プロキシサーバが多数の無線
装置へサービスを提供する場合には、そのような口座の

は、コンピュータシステムとＳＭＳＣ間のデータ通信を
提供する。ＳＭＳ３６は、ネットワークインターフェー
ス３５と同じ又は同様な形式の装置でも良く、実際にＳ
ＭＳインターフェース３６は、単一の通信装置では、ネ
ットワークインターフェース３５と共に実行されうる。

変形例も、所定のシステムの特定の要求に合わせること
ができる。従って、特定の構成要素は、所定のシステム
に対する図３に示す構造に付加されてもよく、又は、図
３に示す特定の構成要素は所定のシステムから削除され
ても良い。

アで実行できることに注意する。即ち、記載された動作
は、処理システム内で、メモリに含まれる命令のシーケ

ｍ社のストックシンボルは”ＰＨＣＭ”である。従っ
て、ユーザは、ＳＭＳメッセージモードで無線装置に入
力”ＱＵＯＴＥＰＨＣＭ”を入力する。ここで”ＱＵＯ
ＴＥ”はキーワードであり、無線装置１００はＳＭＳメ
ッセージ内の入力を指定されたＳＭＳＣ２１２へ送信す

ると、プロキシサーバ１０８は、最初に、ユーザがサー
ビスを受ける資格を有するか否かを確認するようなある

ト化する処理であり、各々は、最大ＳＭＳメッセージ長

以前のキーワード要求に基づいても良い。

最初に、無線装置１００のユーザが、ＳＭＳキーワード
要求を入力するために、ＳＭＳエディターを活性化す
る。例えば、ユーザがカリフォルニアレッドウッド市の
Ｐｈｏｎｅ．ｃｏｍ社の現在の株価を見つけることを欲
しているとする。ＳＭＳエディタを使用して、ユーザ

線装置１００のディスプレイに表示される。ユーザ

に、ディスプレイに、同様に表示される。識別子の入力
に際し、ＳＭＳ要求された”ＱＵＯＴＥＰＨＣＭ”は、

を選択するＳＭＳＣ２１２へ送られる。ＳＭＳＣとプロ
キシサーバ１０８の間の通信プロトコルは、無線装置１
００のＭＩＮを含む。

ェース２１１は、ＭＩＮとＳＭＳ要求のテキストを抽出
し、要求テキストをプルエンジン２１０へ送る。５０２
で、プルエンジン２１０は要求テキストを外部アプリケ
ーションと通信する場合に予想される文字セットに変換
符号化する。変換符号化は、例えば、単純な検索動作、
異なる装置によりどの文字セットが使用されるかの所定

ルドをも含む。このフィールドは、後に、コンテンツを
無線装置へ”プッシュ” するのに使用され得る。例え

１２は、テキスト／プレーンコンテンツを要求している
とする。最初にアプリケーションからのマークアップフ
ァイル応答が、７０１で、プルエンジン２１０により受
信される。７０２で、プルエンジン２１０はファイルに
次の（又は、もし可能なら最初の）マークアップタグを
配置する。プルエンジン２１０は、タグにより識別され
るコンテンツを変換するのに適切か否かを決定する。適
切でない場合には、タグとそのコンテンツは７０６で捨

  1. 【請求項１】 ネットワークから無線装置へコンテンツ
    を提供する方法であって、 無線装置は第２のプロトコルに従っているがしかし第1
    のプロトコルには従っていない場合に、第1のプロトコ
    ルに従って、ネットワーク上の資源からコンテンツを受
    信するステップと、 コンテンツを、適切な表示のために無線装置により受信
    することのできるフォーマットのメッセージに変換する
    ステップと、 無線装置にメッセージを送るためのメッセージセンタ
    へ、メッセージを伝送するステップとを有する方法。
  2. 【請求項２】 ネットワーク上の資源からコンテンツを
    受信する前記ステップは、無線装置からのコンテンツの
    要求に応答する請求項1記載の方法。
  3. 【請求項３】 ネットワークから無線装置へコンテンツ
    を提供する方法であって、 コンテンツに関する無線装置からの要求に基づいて、メ
    ッセージを受信するステップと、 メッセージ内のキーワードを識別するステップと、 所定の規則の組に従って、キーワードをネットワーク資

    ージを受信するステップと、 メッセージ内のキーワードを識別するステップと、 キーワードをネットワーク上のネットワーク資源にマッ
    ピングするステップと、 キーワードに基づいてネットワーク資源からコンテンツ
    を取り出すステップと、 コンテンツを、アプリケーションのコンテンツ形式から
    無線装置により使用可能なコンテンツ形式へ変換するス
    テップと、 コンテンツを、無線装置のメッセージ要求に合う文字セ
    ットに変換符号化するステップとを有する方法を実行す
    るために、機械により実行可能な命令のシーケンスを具
    体的に具体化する機械読出し可能なプログラム蓄積媒
    体。
  13. 【請求項１３】 ネットワークから無線装置へコンテン
    ツを提供する装置であって、 無線装置から、要求に基づいて、第１のプロトコルと第
    １の文字セットに従うメッセージを受信する手段と、 第２の文字セットにメッセージを変換符号化する手段
    と、 メッセージ内のキーワードを識別する手段と、 キーワードをネットワーク資源にマッピングする手段
    と、 第２のプロトコルを使用して、キーワードに基づいてネ
    ットワーク資源から、第２の文字セットのコンテンツを
    取り出す手段と、 コンテンツを、アプリケーションのコンテンツ形式か
    ら、無線装置で使用可能なコンテンツ形式へ変換する手
    段と、 コンテンツを、第１の文字セットに変換符号化する手段
    と、 第１のプロトコルを使用して第１の文字セットで、無線
    装置へコンテンツを提供する手段とを有する装置。
  14. 【請求項１４】 ネットワーク上で遠隔に維持されてい
    るコンテンツを、無線装置へ提供する装置であって、 ＳＭＳセンターを介して、無線装置から無線ネットワー
    ク上を伝送された、コンテンツについてのＳＭＳ要求を
    受信する手段と、 第１の文字セットから第２の言語文字セットへＳＭＳ要
    求を変換符号化する手段と、 変換符号化された要求からキーワードを抜き出す手段
    と、 キーワード対ＵＲＬマッピングを維持する手段と、 キーワードに関連し、前記コンテンツを提供できるアプ
    リケーションに関連するＵＲＬを識別するために、キー
    ワード対ＵＲＬマッピング内のキーワードを検索する手
    段と、 キーワードとＵＲＬを含むＨＴＴＰ ＰＯＳＴ動作を構
    成する手段と、 有線ネットワークを介して、ＨＴＴＰ ＰＯＳＴ動作
    を、アプリケーションに提出する手段と、 有線ネットワークを介して、ＰＯＳＴ動作に応答してア
    プリケーションから、前記コンテンツを含むＨＴＴＰ応
