"Contenitore per la raccolta e la conservazione di campioni bioptici" "Container for the collection and storage of biopsy samples"
DESCRIZIONE DESCRIPTION
The present invention relates to a container for the collection and storage of biopsy samples.
As is known, biopsy is a medical examination which consists in taking a portion or fragment of tissue from a living organism to allow the analysis of that portion or fragment of tissue (e.g. under a microscope or microbiology or molecular biology techniques ) for diagnostic purposes. Once the tissue sample has been collected from the patient, it is collected in a container and then a preservative agent, typically formalin (formaldehyde in aqueous solution), is placed in the container to ensure the preservation of the biopsy sample. The container, with the biopsy sample dipped in formalin, can then be closed and shipped to a laboratory for analysis. Formalin, like other preservative agents, is a toxic substance by inhalation, especially a carcinogen. Even if the operation of introducing formalin into the container is carried out under a fume hood, this operation still puts at risk the health of the operators involved in the collection of biopsy samples. There is therefore a need to avoid that the operator comes directly into contact with formalin or is otherwise exposed to the vapors of the formalin used as a preservative for the preservation of biopsy samples.
To meet this need, special containers have been designed for the collection and storage of biopsy samples. A container for the collection and storage of biopsy samples is known for example from WO2012 / 171529. According to this known solution, the container comprises a body suitable for containing the biopsy sample to be preserved and a cap able to engage the body by screwing in order to seal it, where the cap comprises a receptacle, which contains a preservative solution (for example formalin) and it is sealed by a membrane, and a perforating member adapted to be pressed against the membrane to tear it and thus allow the preservative solution contained in the receptacle to escape from the receptacle and fill the body of the container to submerge the biopsy sample. This known container is particularly complex and is therefore also particularly expensive to manufacture. Furthermore, this known container is not very suitable for use with biopsy samples of very small dimensions, for example dimensions of less than one millimeter, since the sample can remain trapped in the interstices between the various components of the container.
The aim of the present invention is therefore to offer a container for the collection and storage of biopsy samples which, with the same safety, is simpler to produce and less expensive to produce than the known technique discussed above and which is also particularly suitable for use. with small biopsy specimens, especially a few millimeters in size or even less than a millimeter in size.
This and other purposes are fully achieved according to the invention thanks to a container for the collection and storage of biopsy samples having the characteristics defined in the attached independent claim 1.
Further advantageous features of the invention are specified in the dependent claims, the content of which is to be understood as an integral and integral part of the following description.
In summary, the invention is based on the idea of making a container comprising a body having a side wall, a bottom wall and a mouth, and a cap mounted on the mouth of the body so as to seal the body, in which the body is filled with a preservative solution, for example formalin, and in which the cap is made of elastomeric material.
The use of such a cap first of all guarantees the hermetic closure of the container, thus eliminating the risk of the operator coming into direct contact with the preservative solution or in any case being exposed to the vapors generated by the preservative solution. This also applies when inserting the biopsy sample into the container, since the sample can be inserted with a biopsy forceps by piercing the cap, thus without the need to remove the cap from the body of the container. Thanks to its elastic properties, the cap ensures the hermetic closure of the container even when the biopsy forceps (or other instrument) pierces the cap for the insertion of the biopsy sample into the container and also when the biopsy forceps is extracted through the cap. the biopsy specimen has been inserted into the container.
Furthermore, the container for biopsy samples according to the invention has no components inside the body and therefore does not involve any risk of entrapment of the biopsy sample, even in the case of a very small sample. Such a container is therefore particularly suitable for use even with very small biopsy samples.
A further advantage of the container according to the invention is its simplicity and low manufacturing cost.
In order to facilitate the perforation of the cap for the introduction of the biopsy sample inside the container, one or more incisions or areas / points of reduced thickness can be provided on the cap, preferably in a central area of the same.
According to an embodiment, the container further comprises an impermeable film, made for example of aluminum, fixed to the body of the container below the cap. This expedient allows to have a further barrier against the leakage of the preservative solution and / or the vapors generated by it.
The container can also comprise a safety ring sealing the cap, so as to further increase the safety level of the container.
Ulteriori caratteristiche e vantaggi della presente invenzione risulteranno più chiaramente dalla descrizione dettagliata che segue, data a puro titolo di esempio non limitativo con riferimento ai disegni allegati, in cui: Further characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become clearer from the detailed description that follows, given purely by way of non-limiting example with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
la figura 1 è una vista schematica in sezione assiale di un contenitore per la raccolta e la conservazione di campioni bioptici secondo la presente invenzione; e Figure 1 is a schematic view in axial section of a container for the collection and storage of biopsy samples according to the present invention; And
Figure 2 shows the container of Figure 1, in the condition in which a biopsy forceps extends through the cap of the container for the insertion of a biopsy sample inside the container.
With reference to the figures, a container for the collection and storage of biopsy samples according to an embodiment of the present invention is indicated as a whole with 10. The container 10 comprises a body 12 suitable for containing a biopsy sample B and a cap 14 mounted on the body 12 to seal it. The body 12 comprises a side wall 16, a bottom wall 18 and an opening 20 and is filled with a preservative solution S, for example based on formalin. Body 12 can be of any size, particularly - but not exclusively - 10 to 60ml.
The cap 14 is made of elastomeric material (for example silicone rubber) and is fixed to the body 12 at the mouth 20, for example by screwing. The cap 14 is configured so that it can be pierced by a common biopsy forceps P to allow the insertion of the biopsy sample B inside the container without having to disassemble the cap 14 from the body 12, as shown in figure 2. Al in order to facilitate the perforation of the cap 14 by the biopsy forceps P, and therefore the introduction of the biopsy sample B inside the container 10, one or more incisions can be provided on the cap, preferably in a central area of the same or areas / points with reduced thickness (not shown in the drawings).
Preferably, the cap 14 is made by means of a thermoforming process.
Thanks to the use of such a cap, the operator can thus insert the biopsy sample inside the container without disassembling the cap, but simply by piercing the cap using the same biopsy forceps with which the biopsy sample was taken. The elastomeric material with which the cap is made ensures the hermetic seal of the container even when the cap is torn with the pliers for the introduction of the biopsy sample, as well as when the pliers are removed from the container. The container according to the invention, therefore, avoids the operator's exposure to the preservative solution contained in the container and to the vapors generated by the same not only before the operation of inserting the biopsy sample B inside the container, but also during and after this operation.
According to an embodiment, not shown, the container can further comprise an impermeable film, made for example of aluminum, fixed to the body of the container under the cap, in order to ensure a further barrier against the leakage of the preservative solution and / or of the vapors generated by it. The container can also comprise a safety ring sealing the cap, so as to further increase the safety level of the container.
Naturally, the principle of the invention remaining the same, the embodiments and construction details may be widely varied with respect to what has been described and illustrated purely by way of non-limiting example, without thereby departing from the scope of the invention as defined. in the attached claims.
