La maggior parte di questi inquinamenti riguarda la parte pesante degli idrocarburi contenuti nell’olio greggio di petrolio, ad esempio greggio evaporato, gasoli ed oli combustibili più o meno invecchiati, fondami ed altri residui di lavorazione. Inoltre, proprio in conseguenza dell’elevata viscosità di detti oli, il loro grado di impregnazione del terreno/fango à ̈ elevato, raggiungendo concentrazioni di qualche decina di unità percentuali.
