Un pacchetto di sigarette morbido di tipo tradizionale comprende un incarto interno di carta metallizzata che avvolge completamente un gruppo di sigarette, ed un involucro esterno che à ̈ costituito di un materiale di incarto morbido, à ̈ conformato a tazza, e racchiude l’incarto interno su cinque lati lasciando in vista una parete superiore (o di testa) dell’incarto interno stesso. Per il prelievo delle sigarette il fumatore, all’atto della prima apertura del pacchetto, deve lacerare una parte della parete superiore dell’incarto interno lasciata scoperta dall’involucro esterno; tuttavia, dopo che la parete superiore dell’incarto interno à ̈ stata lacerata, il pacchetto non à ̈ più richiudibile e quindi può succedere che delle sigarette (o, più frequentemente, della polvere di tabacco) fuoriescano inavvertitamente dal pacchetto stesso mentre il fumatore non lo sta utilizzando e lo tiene riposto, per esempio, in tasca o in una borsa. Il pannello adesivo aderisce in modo permanente (ovvero senza mai venire separato) ad un lembo di piegatura posteriore della parete superiore dell’incarto interno ed aderisce in modo separabile (per venire separato durante l’apertura del pacchetto di sigarette) alla restante parte della parete superiore dell’incarto interno e alla parete anteriore dell’involucro esterno.
