CONTENITORE PER ALIMENTI E METODO PER REALIZZARLO FOOD CONTAINER AND METHOD TO MAKE IT
DESCRIZIONE DELL'INVENZIONE DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
The present invention falls within the sector concerning the packaging and transport of freshly prepared food products and in particular it refers to a container for food and a method for making it.
Containers for packaging food products, such as for example pizza, pastries, sandwiches, soups and the like, are known, made of cardboard both in the form of flat cardboard and corrugated cardboard.
The flat cardboard containers are made with a layer of recycled paper and / or cardboard whose thickness is determined by the desired levels of stiffness and resistance. Typically for small containers, the thickness is of the order of 1 mm or slightly less and increases with the size of the container itself or the weight of the food product to be transported.
The cardboard layer is coated on the face or faces in direct contact with the food product with at least one suitable protective layer that provides a liquid or grease-resistant barrier for the paper or cardboard and prevents any harmful substances present in the paper and / or in the cardboard used can contaminate the food product. Among the known protective layers used are mentioned polyethylene-based polymeric films or aluminum-based metal films.
The corrugated cardboard containers are made by interposing between two flat layers of paper or light cardboard at least an intermediate corrugated layer of the same or similar material. For large containers, the stratification can be repeated in order to increase the thickness of the walls and consequently increase their resistance and rigidity.
Typically for small containers, the thickness of the so-called single-wave micro-wave corrugated cardboard is about 2 mm. For larger containers it is possible either to increase the thickness of the wave with the so-called low and medium waves which allow to obtain final thicknesses respectively of about 3 and 4 mm, or it is possible to stratify different waves in succession, obtaining in in this way the so-called double wave, triple wave, micro triple, and similar, which allow to realize thicknesses even higher than 5 mm.
The second containers are typically made with paper and / or cardboard of recycled material and the face in contact with the food product must be suitably coated with films resistant to liquids and / or fats.
Compared to flat cardboard containers, corrugated cardboard containers guarantee greater thermal insulation and offer the possibility of evacuating any excess humidity, as occurs for example in pizza containers. The greater thickness, due to the presence of the intermediate corrugated layer, of said second containers provides greater flexural rigidity than the first containers without increasing their weight.
A disadvantage of known containers made with flat cardboard consists in the high weight / stiffness and weight / resistance ratio of the same associated with a limited capacity for thermal insulation and evacuation of any excess humidity.
A further disadvantage of said first known containers concerns their limited thermal insulation power which makes them unsuitable for transporting hot foods, such as for example freshly baked pizza, as they would make them cool too quickly.
A disadvantage of known containers made with traditional corrugated cardboard concerns their high thickness which requires greater transport volumes for the same total number of containers when compared with containers made with flat cardboard.
Another disadvantage of said second known containers concerns the surface finish obtainable with a wave of standard dimensions which, due to the distances between the peaks of two successive waves, does not allow to obtain perfectly smooth surfaces.
A disadvantage common to both types of known containers consists in the need to resort to the addition of coatings resistant to both liquids and fats as well as suitable for contact with food to avoid any possible contamination of the latter by substances harmful or otherwise harmful present in the cardboard used.
Another disadvantage consists in the difficulty of disposing of the container at the end of its use as it cannot be disposed of in the appropriate paper containers as it may be dirty from the food transported and / or it may contain metallized and / or plasticized surface coatings that need of other types of disposal.
An object of the present invention is to propose a container for food having reduced weight and bulk combined with high rigidity and resistance to the loads it has to carry.
Another purpose is to propose a container made with completely natural materials that can be disposed of either directly in the containers dedicated to compostable and / or biodegradable food remains and in the containers reserved for paper and its like.
A further aim is to propose a container which does not require specific coatings for surfaces in contact with food products and which is therefore faster, simpler and cheaper to produce, manage and dispose of.

With reference to Figures 1 to 6, 1 indicates the food container object of the present invention.
In the preferred embodiment, illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the container 1 consists of a base surface 2 which is almost flat and laterally delimited by lateral surfaces 3 which collaborate with the base surface 2 to define a ™ containment area for food products to be transported or temporarily stored there.
Both the base surface 2 and the side surfaces 3 are made with a stratified element 10, shown in figure 7, obtained by interposing between a first 11 and a second 13 layer, almost flat and of limited thickness, a layer intermediate 12 consisting of a corrugated element.
The flat elements of the first II and second 12 layers have a thickness in a range from 0.095 mm to about 0.215 mm while the corrugated element has a thickness in a range from 0.4 mm to 0.6 mm obtaining a thickness overall of the stratified element 10 comprised in an interval from 0.6 mm to 1 mm and more preferably of about 0.8 mm.
The person skilled in the art can vary the aforesaid thicknesses used in the realization of the stratified element according to the desired stiffness and resistance. For flat elements the thicknesses could be included in a wider range from 0.05 mm and 0.5 mm while the corrugated element could have a thickness included in a wider range from 0.2 mm to 1.2 mm allowing to obtain a container capable of guaranteeing the purposes proposed for the present invention.
Possible variations in the realization of the stratified element 10, as illustrated for example in figure 8, provide for the addition of further wavy elements interspersed with flat elements. This stratification allows to increase the thickness of the stratified element 10 without having to resort to the use of larger wavy elements and consequently being able to limit the distance between two successive peaks of the waves themselves. Maintaining a reduced distance between two successive peaks limits any surface defects or wrinkles of the flat elements and reduces the risk that the aforementioned waves can become unstable when they are making the container less resistant and rigid.
The first 11, intermediate 12 and second 13 layers are made with materials of vegetable origin and are joined together by means of adhesive means also of vegetable origin.
These materials of vegetable origin are based on pure virgin fiber of first use, such as pure cellulose for the different layers, while the adhesive means are based on starch, and in particular corn starch.
The combined use of pure cellulose and corn starch allows to obtain a container made with completely natural, biodegradable and especially compostable materials.
Furthermore, these materials are suitable for use in direct contact with food products, avoiding possible contamination of the latter.
The materials used to make the layered element 10 comply with the Italian legislation according to the Ministerial Decree of 19 March 1973, the German legislation, according to the BFR recommendation dated 05.07.2007 and the European legislation according to the EC 2023/06 directives.
Furthermore, to ensure greater resistance to liquids and fats, the material used to make the surface that must directly support the food product has a reduced surface porosity compared to other surfaces and optionally has completely closed pores.
To check the degree of resistance to liquids and greases, the surface tension test called Kit Test is performed and only materials with a Kit Test value between 6 and 12 and preferably between 8 and 12 are used.
The container is made by assembling the layered element by interposing an intermediate element 12 between the first layer 11 and the second layer 13 and binding them by means of adhesive means placed at the points of contact between the flat elements and the crests of the intermediate element 12.
Once a sheet or a roll of the stratified element 10 has been made, the latter is shaped in the plan shape corresponding to an open and flat configuration of the desired container 1.
The shaping is done by die-cutting but other methods can also be used including blanking or cutting.
Subsequently, each lateral surface 3 is created by folding the layered element 10 in correspondence with the fold lines along the edges of the base surface 2 which were impressed during the shaping operation.
The folded side surfaces 4 are mutually held in position by means of constraint means 4, constituted, by way of example but not of limitation, by protrusions present in some of the lateral surfaces which couple to the slots or holes present in the adjacent lateral surfaces.
Detta deformazione plastica à ̈ ottenuta mediante termoformatura dell’elemento stratificato 10 realizzata interponendo l’elemento stratificato 10, precedentemente sagomato, tra mezzi a stampo e controstampo riscaldati e pressati reciprocamente. In the variant of the preferred embodiment, as illustrated in Figures 3 to 6, the lateral surfaces 3 are obtained by means of â € œplastic deformationâ € of the stratified element 10 in correspondence with peripheral portions of the base surface 2. Said plastic deformation is It is obtained by thermoforming the stratified element 10 made by interposing the stratified element 10, previously shaped, between mold and countermould means heated and mutually pressed.
A further variant of the preferred embodiment also comprises a covering surface 8 consisting of at least one layered element 10 which is constrained to a lateral surface 3 or unilaterally coupled to all the lateral surfaces 3 in such a way as to form a sort of lid of said container 1.
Said covering surface 8 can also be made with a plurality of stratified elements which can be removably coupled to each other.
Furthermore, the covering surface comprises vent means 9 for the air and humidity present inside the container 1, and said vent means are made by means of partially or fully openable holes or slits.
Another variant of the preferred embodiment provides for abutment means 7 near the edges of the lateral surfaces 3 in order to be able to stack a plurality of containers 1 on top of each other in a stable and safe manner.
A further variant of the preferred embodiment provides that the container I is printed on the surface with widely used and tested techniques for printing thin and flexible supports such as lithographic or flexographic or offset printing with the use of colors of natural origin, so as not to risk contaminating the food products contained in the container 1.
The operation of the container 1, common to all the embodiments, provides that the user places inside the container 1 a food product such as a pizza, a cake, pastries, exotic dishes such as chilli con carne or various soups, and transport it to the place where you will consume it.
The food product can be consumed by directly exploiting the container 1 as a support for the product itself or by transferring the latter onto other supports, plates or the like.
Once the food product has been consumed, the user throws the container 1 and any remains of the food product not consumed directly into the compostable waste container, without the need to separate the wet fraction from the container, greatly simplifying waste management.
The method for making a container 1 according to the preferred embodiment of the container 1 described above provides for a first step of punching and / or shearing and / or cutting of stratified elements 10 starting from single sheets or in the form of rolls followed by a step of forming of the side surfaces 3.
The forming of the lateral surfaces 3 takes place by means of a folding step of the stratified element 10 in correspondence with the fold lines delimiting the edges of the base surface 2 and made during the blanking and / or punching and / or cutting step.
After the folding step, the step of reciprocal fixing of the side surfaces 3 takes place by means of the silent interlocking of constraining elements 4 present on the side surfaces 3. A variant of the method for making a container 1 according to the first variant of the preferred embodiment of the container 1 provides that the lateral surfaces 3 are formed by means of a plastic deformation step of the stratified element 10 in correspondence with peripheral portions of the base surface 2. The obtained plastic deformation step consists in a thermoforming of the stratified element 10 made by interposing the stratified element 10 between mold and counter-mold means heated and mutually pressed.
A further variant of the method provides for a step of printing the surface of the container 1 which comes into contact with the food product, before the step of punching and / or shearing and / or cutting.
Thanks to the reduced thickness of the layered element 10, the printing phase is carried out with lithographic or flexographic or offset printing techniques and uses only colors of natural origin.
An advantage of the present invention is that of providing a food container having reduced weight and dimensions combined with a high stiffness and resistance to the loads it has to carry.
Another advantage is to provide a container made with completely natural materials that can be disposed of either directly in the containers dedicated to compostable and / or biodegradable food remains and in the containers reserved for paper and its like.
Another advantage is to provide a container that does not require specific coatings for surfaces in contact with food products and which is therefore faster, easier and cheaper to produce, manage and dispose of.
