Abstract

1377109 Trim strips STANDARD PRODUCTS CO 26 Sept 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 44454/72 Heading B6G An end finish for a trim strip of plastics material is produced by removing a portion of the trim strip material such that the remaining portions of the strip material define a recess having at least two edges, and extending through the entire thickness of the trim strip, displacing the remaining portions relative to one another to bring the two edges of the recess into juxtaposed relationship, and interconnecting the remaining portions to retain the two edges in juxtaposed relationship. The interconnection of the remaining portions of the trim strips may be achieved by bonding or by the use of fasteners and preferably by heatsealing the juxtaposed edges together. Preferably the strip material is heated prior to displacement of the trim strip portions to facilitate such displacement or to facilitate both the displacement and heat-sealing of the juxtaposed edges. Heating can be achieved by a heating block having a contour corresponding to that of the recess. Displacement of the trim strip portions to bring the recess edges into juxtaposition can be achieved by using an appropriately contoured forming block. The trim strip may be made of polyvinyl chloride. As shown in Fig. 2 and 3 a portion of a trim strip material is removed whereby remaining side portion 30 and remaining intermediate portion 32 define a recess 34 and remaining side portion 36 and remaining intermediate portion 32 define another recess 38. Recess 34 has two edges 30a and 32a and recess 38 has two edges 36a and 32b. Portions 30 and 36 are cut to a longitudinal length which provides for each to be displaced laterally inwardly relative to the intermediate portion 32 and to terminate in an abutting engagement. Terminal ends 30b and 36b of side portions 30 and 36 are tapered to provide for the terminal ends to be disposed in abutting relationship. The interconnection of the side portions 30 and 36 with intermediate portion 32 is achieved by heatsealing. Heating can be achieved by conductive, radiant, hot gas, or induction heating. Preferably conductive heating is employed by using a heating block 40 provided with electric heating electrodes in recesses 42 thereof. Lateral displacement of the side portions 30 and 32 is preferably achieved after the trimstrip has been heated by a pair of laterally reciprocable die elements 46, 48. Other end contours of the trimsttip are described and illustrated.
