La Curcuma è una specie perenne originaria di India e Pakistan che può raggiungere fino a 1 m di altezza e fa parte della famiglia dello Zenzero. E' stata usata per migliaia di anni nella medicina indiana ayurvedica e cinese. Ha grandi foglie con un picciolo allungato e fiori gialli accolti nelle tasche fornite dalle sue spighe. E' un tubero, che una volta schiacciato e polverizzato si presenta come una spezia di colore arancione. La droga è costituita dal rizoma cilindrico e ramificato, raccolto dopo che la parte aerea si è disseccata. Questo viene privato dalle radici, cotto nell'acqua e posto in appositi essiccatoi. E' uno degli elementi fondanti del più conosciuto Curry, composto per il 3% proprio di curcuma. Il principio attivo della droga è la curcumina.
