Un ulteriore problema connesso con l’uso degli erbicidi è rappresentato dalla loro non elevata biodegradabilità. Il diserbante, una volta disperso nell’ambiente, tende infatti a rimanere in una forma attiva nel terreno trattato per un periodo superiore a quello necessario ad eradicare l’infestazione da erbacce o piante non desiderate. Nel tentativo di ovviare a questo problema, sono state sintetizzate alcune molecole ad attività erbicida aventi una struttura simile a quella di composti naturali che sono degradati dai microrganismi presenti nei terreni o che possiedono una instabilità chimica o fotochimica nell'ambiente.
