Per creare delle onde per la pratica del surf i produttori di sistemi artificiale attualmente spostano ingenti quantità di acqua all'interno di bacini artificiali, in modo tale da far infrangere l'onda creata su fondali studiati con inclinazioni specifiche per creare differenti tipi di one. La realizzazione di questi enormi bacini artificiali e la movimentazione di notevoli quantità di acqua innalza i costi di realizzazione di questi sistemi rendendoli praticamente non convenienti a livello commerciale.
