La presente invenzione si riferisce al campo tecnico dei prodotti cosmetici e ha per oggetto una composizione ad azione foto-protettiva ed insettorepellente comprendente almeno un filtro solare a bassa tossicità e una miscela di oli essenziali ad azione insetto-repellente. I prodotti cosmetici contenenti filtri solari sono prodotti ampiamente diffusi sul mercato. I filtri solari per uso topico si suddividono sostanzialmente in filtri solari fisici e chimici. I filtri solari fisici sono generalmente costituiti da composti inorganici in grado di riflettere le radiazioni UV, proteggendo in questo modo la pelle dalle radiazioni solari potenzialmente dannose. Il meccanismo di azione dei filtri solari chimici consiste invece nell’assorbimento selettivo delle radiazioni solari con una determinata lunghezza d’onda (raggi UVA e UVB), convertendo queste radiazioni in altre forme di energia dispersa. I filtri solari ammessi per l'utilizzo cosmetico nell’Unione Europea sono elencati nell'Allegato VI del Regolamento No. 1223/2009 e successivi aggiornamenti tecnici. Dei 30 filtri solari attualmente presenti nell’Allegato VI, solamente biossido di titanio, zinco ossido e tris-bifenil triazina appartengono alla classe dei filtri solari fisici. Pertanto, la maggior parte dei prodotti cosmetici ad azione foto-protettiva destinati ad essere posti in commercio nell’Unione Europea dovrà contenere filtri solari chimici, eventualmente in associazione con i filtri solari fisici elencati sopra. A causa principalmente della diffusione alle latitudini europee di insetti nocivi e/o fastidiosi per l’uomo attivi durante il giorno (si pensi ad esempio alla zanzara tigre), è sentita l’esigenza di disporre di prodotti cosmetici nei quali all’azione foto-protettiva è associata un’azione insetto-repellente. Esistono in commercio prodotti insetto-repellenti a base di dietiltoluamide (DEET) contenenti anche filtri solari. Tuttavia, oltre ad avere un odore particolarmente sgradevole, la dietiltoluamide è un principio attivo non privo di effetti collaterali (ad esempio è un sospetto neurotossico), in grado di penetrare attraverso la pelle. Secondo alcuni studi inoltre, è sconsigliata l’associazione tra dietiltoluamide e filtri solari, poiché questi ultimi aumenterebbero la penetrazione cutanea della dietiltoluamide stessa. Sono noti e commercialmente disponibili molteplici prodotti insettorepellenti a base di principi attivi naturali, tipicamente a base di oli essenziali, anche piuttosto concentrati. Tuttavia, alcuni di questi prodotti contengono oli essenziali ad azione insetto-repellente con un odore sgradevole (eg. estratto di aglio), ed inoltre alcuni oli essenziali ad azione insetto-repellente hanno un effetto foto-sensibilizzante sulla pelle, potendo causare la comparsa di macchie a seguito dell’esposizione al sole.
