Abstract
Process for the manufacture of high purity silica glass in which a silicon alkoxide takes part in a hydrolysis reaction with a dilute solution of hydrochloric acid when subjected to a first ultrasound treatment to form a mixture of water-soluble alkoxide hydrolysis products and the alcohol corresponding to the alkoxide, which is removed from the reaction environment by a reduced pressure distillation operation; the products of the hydrolysis reaction taking part in a polycondensation reaction and having colloidal silica added to them, dispersed by a second ultrasound treatment, give rise to a colloidal solution which is first consolidated in moulds and then dried and sintered forming monolithic pieces of high purity silica glass of required shape and dimensions.
