Abstract
A coated paper carries on not 1 surface a coating compsn. contg. a binder and an organic pigment. The pigment consists of particles of a water-insol. graft copolymer formed by free-radical graft polymerisation of (i) not 1 ethylenically, unsatd. monomer, and (ii) a water-sol. pre-polymer is on the surface of the graft copolymer particles. (i) The monomer is (m)ethyl alpha-chloroacrylate, methyl methacrylate, isopropyl methacrylate, phenyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, (m)acrylonitrile or has formula where R is H or CH3, Y is CH3 or Cl, and n = 0-3. (ii) The prepolymer is anionic or nonionic and is prepd. by addn. polymerisation of vinyl monomer(s). The ratio by wt. of (ii):(i) is 1-25:100. The graft copolymer has a glass transition temp.of not 75 degrees C. The organic pigment is more easily compatible with paper-coating binders than organic pigments based on polystyrene. Stable latices of the graft copolymer are obtd. without addn. of a stabiliser. Paints and inks contg. the organic pigment, as pigment or filler, are also claimed.
