Abstract
A process for coating paper comprising: a) adhering to at least one of its surfaces a coating composition consisting of a binder material and an organic pigment, said organic pigment being particles of water-insoluble graft copolymer consisting essentially of the product of free radical catalyzed graft copolymerization of (1) at least one ethylenically unsaturated monomer and (2) a water soluble prepolymer having a VER (reduced specific viscosity) of about 0.1 to about 2.5 (NaC1 1M, 1%, 25th), the prepolymer portion of the graft copolymer particles being present on the surface of the particles, said monometer (1) being selected from the group consisting of methyl alpha-chloroacrylate, alpha-chloroacrylate ethyl, methyl methacrylate, isopropyl methacrylate, phenyl methacrylate, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, and numbers having the formula ** (formula) ** where R is hydrogen where R is hydrogen or methyl, and is methyl or chlorine, and n is 0, 1, 2, or 3 and said prepolymer (2) is selected from the group consisting of prepolymers (2) selected from the group consisting of anionic prepolymers and nonionic prepolymers prepared by addition polymerization of a vinyl monomer or mixtures or of vinicola monomers, the amount of prepolymer (2) used being to present the graft copolymer particles from about 1 part to about 25 parts by weight for every 100 parts by weight of monomer (1) used, said graft copolymer having a Tg equal to or greater than 75ºC, and b) then calendering the paper at a temperature of 50ºC to 150ºC and a pressure of 1785 kg/cm to 5355 kg/cm.
