Abstract
Electrochemical cell has an electrode system, for introducing reactant into the cell, comprising a reservoir of liquid metal outside the cell with a wick having a first portion of its length submerged in the liquid metal in the reservoir and a second portion of its length submerged within the electrolyte in the cell. The wick has a greater attraction for the liquid metal than for the electrolyte so that it draws liquid metal into the cell. Used in high temp., secondary electrochemical cells with electrodes that use alkali metals such as lithium or sodium, alkaline earth metals such as calcium, or molten alloys of the metals, as reactants.
