Abstract

Starch-contg. rayon fibres are prepd. by forming a slurry of starch granules in an aq. medium, adding NaOH to form an aq. alkaline starch soln., blending the soln. with viscose, extruding the viscose in fibre form and regenerating the cellulose in the prod. The starch an amylopectin content >=60%. A viscose soln. contg. 5-25% dissolved starch, based on the wt. of cellulose can be extruded to give fibres which are stretched >=50% to give a prod. with tenacity >=2g/denier. Viscose contg. 5-100% dissolved starch, based on the wt. of cellulose, and anionic polymer or polyvinyl-pyrrolidone can be extruded in fibre form and coagulated to give a prod. with increased fluid holding capacity. The starch has an amylopectin content as above. The starch soln. and starch-viscose mixt. have good filterability. The fibres are obtd. in a high yield, can be washed repeatedly, dye well, are resistant to starch removal and behave well in processing, e.g. high speed carding. They can be used in e.g., home furnishings, clothes, sheets, towels, hose reinforcements and absorbent materials.
