Abstract
Hot pressed Si3N4 is prepd. by (a) forming a powder mixt. of Si and reactive O-carrying agents including dry or jet milling to an absolute particle size distribution having no particle larger than 16 microns; (b) compacting to form a preform density 1.1-1.4 g/cm3; (c) heating in a nitriding atmos. without press. to fully react ingredients with the atmos., forming an Si3N4 body; and (d) hot pressing to produce an Si3N4 object of desired dimensions and density, useful as a cutting tool. The mixt. pref. has a max. particle size 3-4.5 microns. The mixt. may also contain 2-25% Si3N4 composite (of the same compsn. of the final object) to increase packing efficiency. The resulting object pref. has a modulus of rupture 150-190 ksi and a hardness (45-N) at least 92. Flaws causing strength redn. are reduced, providing a strength much higher than the conventional 100 ksi. and a hardness above conventional 90-92. Inclusion of Si3N4 decreases the hot pressing compression ratio needed to form a dense body. The prod. is useful as a cutting tool.
