Abstract

Twisted nickel strip catalyst is activated by treating with a soln. of formic acid and hydrogen peroxide to form a layer of nickel formate on the strip and then decomposing the nickel formate by heat so that gases are given off and the layer of nickel formate becomes highly activated. The catalyst produced is also claimed. The catalyst is used for steam reforming of hydrocarbons, esp. methane or natural gas, to form a hydrogen-rich synthesis gas. Decompsn. of the nickel formate layer produces a layer of high surface area.
