Abstract
Process and appts. as claimed for the recovery of heavy hydrocarbons from sludge formed in the storage of crude or partly refined petroleum. Specifically, a method for recovering sludge from a storage tank comprises pumping a dispersant chemical (I) into the sludge through narrow-bore tubular lances and in a water jet, continuously drawing off emulsified hydrocarbons, and continuously recirculating the emulsified oil fractions under pressure. Also claimed is a method for recovering hydrocarbons from a sludge in a tank, by (a) emulsifying the sludge with water and (I), (b) mixing the emulsified fluid with a larger volume of oil to effect suspension of the emulsion in the oil, and (c) allowing the mixture to settle and drawing off the water layer. The technique provides for physical and chemical breakdown of the sluge, forming a pumpable mass which can be drained from the storage tank.
