Abstract
A system of polyurethane raw materials is prepared in the liq. phase and spread as a coating onto an expanded or foam panel, which is initially flat but flexible and has a plastics facing laminated on its lower side: this panel is then placed on two semicylindrical moulds, connected at their common longitudinal edge by a hinge, and each resting in an airtight chamber connected to a vacuum source. Vacuum is then applied to draw the flexible panel together with its liquid coating down into the shells, whereupon one of these shells is rotated through 180 deg. about the hinge to close the cylinder. Hot air is then blown through the cylinder to activate and harden the polyurethane coating. Used as an insulating cladding for pipes. By applying the internal coating in this way, the initial panel, flat in form, can readily be impregnated with self-extinguishing agents to improve its fire resistance. Thus the resultant cladding is highly fire resistant. The flexible form is locked into cylindrical shape by the internal solidified lining so that, even if the shell is opened to fit around a pipe, it naturally re-adopts its cylindrical form.
