Abstract

In a process for incinerating chlorinated organic cpds. contg. nearly equal to 20-70% Cl, the cpd. and air are fed continuously to the combustion zone of an incinerator whose walls are held at nearly equal to 800-1500 degrees C. The gaseous combustion prods. are led into a rapid cooling zone which is cooled by spraying with aq. HCl soln. Hydrogen is led into the cooling zone at >=1 points where the temp is similar or equal to 450-1000 degrees C. The amt. of air introduced into the combustion zone is such that is provided 1-40% more O2 than the theoretical amt. for complete combustion of the organic cpd. to convert all the C atoms into CO2, with combination of the Cl atoms with sufficient of the H atoms into HCl and conversion of all the remaining H atoms into H2O. The amt. of hydrogen injected into the cooling zone is expressed by Z=(0.1-1).m where Z is the vol. % hydrogen w.r.t. air passed into the combustion zone, and m is the vol. % O2 in the cooling zone w.r.t. all the gases present in the zone with the exception of water vapour and HCl. Process gives high conversion of the chlorinated cpds. into HCl with reduced levels of molecular chlorine in the combustion gases, thus reducing atmospheric pollution. This is achieved without introducing superheated steam into the combustion chamber as in previous processes, which lowers the combustion chamber temp. and increases the energy requirement for the process. The process is useful eg for treating chlorinated by-prods. produced during the mfr. of chloroprene and chlorinated pesticides.
