Abstract
A horizontal solid bowl centrifuge for clarifying and decanting, e.g. for dewatering sewage sludge with an admixture of polymer flocculants, has a central feed system for the suspension and for a flocculant, and a worm conveyor which rotates at a slightly different speed from the solid bowl. A radial feed chamber which joins the feed system to the bowl/conveyor annulus is designed to provide the shortest possible path and to reduce the retention time in it to a minimum. For cationic polyelectrolytes with a high shear resistance, a min. amount of flocculant is required for the conditioning of a liquid/solid suspension if the retention time is as near to zero as possible. A reduction of 20% has been recorded.
