Abstract

Storage of heat in the form of latent heat of fusion or solidification is effected by passing a heat-carrying fluid through a thermally insulated storage element, which contains a substance (I) of m.pt. corresp. to the supply and consumption temp. of the heat, (I) being absorbed on a granular bed of microporous carrier (II), inside which the fluid circulates. (II) increases the heat exchange surface area, so that max. heat exchange is attained. (II) is in the form of granules or small rods with a dia. under 2 mm. and consists of active charcoal, coke, etc. (I) can consist of paraffin, fusible inorganic salts, metal hydrides, mixts., metla alloys and polymers. (II) is impregnated by immersion in (I), which is melted at a temp. and low pressure such that all the pores of (II) are filled. The fluid can be a liq., which wets (II) less than (I) wets (II), preventing (I) moving through (II), or the fluid can be air.
