Abstract
The thermal printing block comprises a semiconductor having the shape of the character to be printed. The semiconductor is made of two materials (2, 3) having a pn junction (4). The first material is a substrate in which the second material is embedded. The junction has both a light and a heat output. The heat output (Q3) occurs primarily in the substrate which is extended to the printing surface (7) of the block for thermal printing. The light output occurs primarily in the second material which is extended to the opposite surface (13) of the block to provide a visual output.
