A compost heap is produced by thermal decay of household refuse, industrial waste, drain sludge or other suitable waste. The waste is first broken up to an acceptable particle size, e.g. 10-15 mm and non-usable pieces discarded. The prepd. waste is formed in a heap over a removable former so that the final heap has ground-based, open-ended, tunnels extending deeply into or right through the heap in a longitudinal direction. Above the tunnels, and pref. offset laterally between them, ventilation passages run parallel and coextensively with the tunnels. Chimneys are sunk into the top of the heap almost down to the passages. Automatic aeration ensures that the waste rots down hygienically with no need for any turning.
