Abstract
An aq. coating compsn. comprises a (partially) amine neutralised copolymer (I) prepd. in the presence of a catalyst and in the absence of external surfactants, mercaptans and dispersion stabiliser, and 5-40wt.% w.r.t. to total resin solid content aldehyde resin (II). (I) is a copolymer contg. 5-50wt.% substd. (meth)acrylamide (III) C-C(R)-(CONHCH2OR1) ; 3-30wt.% unsatd. carboxylic acid (IV) chosen from (meth)acrylic-, itaconic-, crotonic- or maleic acid or maleic- or fumaric acid semi-esters; 5-75wt.% monomer (V) chosen from styrene, vinyl toluene or 1-4C alkyl methacrylate; and 5-75wt.% plasticising monomer (VI) chosen from >13C alkyl acrylate and 5-16C alkyl methacrylate. R is H or Me and R1 is H or lower alkyl, at least 50% of R1 being lower alkyl. The coatings may be used as protective coatings for metal, glass, wood esp. for tin cans contg. food or drink. They have excellent adhesion to the metal and adhesive in the seam of the tin, good heat resistance and do not effect the clarity or taste of drinks e.g., beer. In an example, a coating compsn. comprised 200 pt.wt. aq. copolymer dispersion of acrylic acid, N-(butoxymethyl)-acrylamide, styrene, and the alkylacrylate, an alkyl methylolphenol ether 17.4 pt.wt. and ethylene glycol monoethylether 17.4 pt.wt.
